Toughest Courses

Waimea HI

My nominee for the toughest XC course in the nation is that of the Waimea HS / Hawaii Prep Academy course in Waimea, Hawaii (the Big Island).

The 3 mile course is run on hilly lava with many lava chunks still on the course. Last year the wind was blowing in the 40-50 mph range -- there is almost always a stiff breeze in the area. As I recall, the course is on the lower slopes of Mauna Loa, one of the largest volcanos on Earth. It is the XC course used by Waimea HS and Hawaii Prep Academy for their competitions, as well as the all-island meet.

No one is going to run in the 14's on this course!
