A packed house of nearly 5100 at the Randal Tyson Track Center
in
Fayetteville, Arkansas was treated to an exciting race in the Randal
Tyson High School Boys Mile race as part of the Razorback-Tyson
Foods
Invitational on February 15. Local favorite Chase Feltner of
Russellville (AR) took the early lead through splits of
29.30-59.76-1:31.77 before Kippy Keino of Fork Union (VA) slid into
the
lead with four laps left in 2:04.42. Keino held onto the lead through
five laps on the 200m banked Mondo track, home to the NCAA championships
since 2000, as he clicked off a 32.31 for a 2:36.73. Adam Perkins
of
Liberty (MO) slipped in behind Keino on lap 6 as the two passed
with
400m left in 3:08.13. Perkins and Keino were in a two-man race when
Perkins took the lead entering the back turn as the capacity crowd
cheered loudly for the young milers. Perkins lengthened his lead
over
the last 200m with a 32.21 to grab the win in 4:11.78 as Keino crossed
in 4:12.97. Mike Poe of Etiwanda (CA) took 3rd in 4:16.92 just ahead
of
Josh Harper of West Plains (MO) in 4:18.10 and Sam Bair, Jr. of
Shaler
(PA) in 4:19.41.
