How the race was run

Rachel Bryan looked on cruise control the entire race,
gliding along on the lead with no apparent strain. She finished
with the #9 time on the all-time Mt. SAC course list.

Early in the race, Collier Lawrence was running second (left), with a gap to Ruth Graham and Kristina Smith (below).

Coming off the switchbacks, Ruth Graham moved into second
and took up the chase, but she could get no closer than 12 seconds to Bryan.

What they said

by Doug Speck

Rachel Bryan (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove) -
On her race, "Coming into this race I had a cold and was bothered a bit by my asthma. I just wanted to run the best that I could, and not let these problems bother me. I felt good in the cold weather, better than I think I might if it had been warmer. During the race I felt alone for a time, but sensed there were some close partway through. The Switchbacks were not too tough in the beginning, because you are out flying the first mile, and you kind of get them over with early. The Switchbacks do kind of drag out, but once you start heading down that area is fine with a long recovery. The "poop-out" hill was hard, and I felt that I was starting to get tired from my illness. Behind Reservoir Hill I heard them mention Ruth Graham was in second, and I did not slow up there, and tried to keep up a good lead, and work that part. I saw Ruth when I came around the bend to start up Reservoir Hill, and it motivated me to keep going strong. I did not have a time goal coming in, being sick and all, so I am very pleased with my effort today."
"Interestingly, my track 3200 pr came when I was sick, with this race also one where I came in being a bit ill. Towards the end of the year I would like to make Foot Locker Nationals and place in the top five. I am from Massachusetts, and lived there until 13 or 14, so as far as college, it would not bother me to get away from California. I enjoyed the four seasons in the east. I do not have a favorite school at this time."
