Boys Individual Sweepstakes Race
Tim Nelson (Liberty Christian, Redding) - When asked about his being in third place going up the last hill, and to describe the race from there: "I could tell by the form of the first two runners that they were tired, so I just hammered the (last) hill, and did not gain too much on the downhill right after that. I have been really practicing my last 800 really hard, and it just developed that I was able to pass them. I have not gone out in 4:40 this season like I did, and I did not know what would happen after that. I was about 5th or 6th at the mile, and I moved up to third off the switchbacks. I felt really great at the finish, I was tired, but I was happy that I had really gone out conservatively, as I had plenty left. I'm definitely happy today. My goal for Foot Locker Nationals is to win. The Regionals are to qualify, but I will run to win at Nationals. In Track I definitely want to get under 9:00 for 3200m. The weather was great, though it was a bit muddy in areas, it was better than dusty."
Pressed further on other matters on the day, "I did not feel the race had gotten away from me at two miles when I was behind because I felt good and strong. I hammered the last hill hard, but held back a bit on the others leading up to that. There was no need to totally wear myself out at that time. I have a visit to University of Colorado in two weeks, and will probably take my other visits in January."
The week's workouts,
Monday - easy workout
Tuesday - 9 x 800's with 30 seconds rest at 2:30 pace on the flat
Wed - easy workout
Thursday - two minutes at cruising pace - 2:30 off, then we ran 3 400's at 70 second pace, and we repeated the above.
Friday - yesterday I ran about two miles, as we drove all the way here, about eight hours."
"I had no goals for time today, just to win the race."
