What they said

by Doug Speck

Troy Werner (Canyon, Canyon Country) - Race winner in his first Varsity race win ever (remember he is in a super program through the years), with two frosh/soph wins two years ago. Quite an interesting resume.
His comments on the race: "Coming off the switchbacks I was in about 10th place. Running up poop-out I started to catch people and felt that I could do it. This is my first Varsity race win ever. I won two races two years ago at the Frosh/Soph level, but this is my first Varsity level race win ever!"
Coach George Wright
On the team's race and this team, "We have never had a team that has been such a good pack. Today, as a group we were a bit concerned as we were in the third back of the race at the start, but they moved up very strong starting with Poop-out and over Reservoir. The pack was the main difference between us and Loyola, as we put six in front of their fourth I believe. I believe the gap today was 26 or 27 seconds."
Strategy coming in: "We warned people about getting out too hard today, be careful on the first mile. All our training is geared around getting up the hills so we can run the downhills, and we ran the downhills pretty good today. We had no particular strategy about where we needed to be placewise, but worked on some general areas on racing. I think we are better than we are ranked nationally, I think 23rd, with the best team in California probably better than we are placed at the moment."
About this team, "The majority of this team are seniors. There are five or six usually on the Varsity. They are mature and have been together longer, and are close friendship wise and have very common goals. They did great work this summer, and they did it together. The teams in the past have been spread out gradewise more."
On retirement from coaching this year, "It ties into my retirement from teaching. With the seniors we have, I decided to go out with them, as original plans were to retire last year from coaching. I have a good assistant coach, and a good frosh class, so the time is right."
