"I've got to go," were Carolyn Rauen's first words after
her impressive win in 17:55. The Turpin Cincinnati junior had to
get back to Cincinnati for a soccer game and couldn't stay to pick
up her trophy.
Rauen took charge of this race after 3200 meters in 11:28. "I
was just trying to push for a good time," Rauen said. Her goals
for the season are to help Turpin defend its 2001 state championship,
make a good showing at the Great American Cross Country Festival
in Charlotte September 28, and do better in Foot Locker (she was
41st in the Midwest regional last year).
A week ago, Rauen had lost by 20 seconds to freshman Angela Bizzari
of Mason Cincinnati, who finished 3rd and 2nd at 1500 and 3000 meters
in the Youth division (age 13-14) of the USATF Junior Olympics in
Omaha in July.
"That gave me extra motivation today," Rauen said. "Angela's
good."
Maggie Infeld, sub-2:10 anchor of Beaumont Cleveland Heights' national
champion sprint medley relay team at AOC Raleigh in June, was with
Rauen early, dropped back, and then rallied for second place in
18:03, eight seconds behind Rauen.
"I was happy with my time, but not my performance," Infeld
said. "I was not really into it today. I felt really bad when
Carolyn broke away. I tried to pick it up at the end, but she did
too."
Rockford MI jr Nikki Bohnsack, who won this race last year in 17:52,
was an unhappy spectator today because of injury. "I was tingling
because I wanted to run so bad," she said.
Bohnsack wants to run so bad that she tried to run through a hip
injury suffered when she jumped off the pier of her lakeside home
in early August and hit a rock. Nikki ran a 5-mile road race later
in August and the 5K Benzie Invitational last Saturday before the
pain drove her to see a doctor. He found a hairline fracture of
the hip. Nikki is training in the pool and hopes to be on the course
again in 3-4 weeks.
