Seeded BoysLead pack:
Eventual top 5 have lead rounding the lake. Points to Prove Before They’re Throughby Stephen (SteveU) Underwood Chances are that Bobby Curtis, Matt Debole and Ryan Deak would all recall Foot Locker CC last fall with some degree of regret. The 2001 season for each of these standouts came to a somewhat disappointing end. On Saturday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, each served notice that things might be different this year. The talented trio will lead the South team to Foot Locker Finals in San Diego. The qualifiers and a few others ran together in a pack much of the race (splits of 4:38, 9:38), with modest lead exchanges, but no decisive moves. With about 1200 to go, however, Curtis began moving on out. Debole followed, but didn’t cover, allowing the St. Xavier HS senior (Louisville, KY) to triumph in 14:49. Debole (Mt. Tabor HS, Winston-Salem, NC), cruised in second in 14:55. The rest of the qualifiers filled in as follows: 3. Ryan Deak, (Tallahassee, FL) 14:58 Firm ControlCurtis was a semi-disappointing 3rd here last year, having been touted to duke it out with winner Bobby Lockhart, and a very disappointing 21st in Orlando. While his margin Saturday wasn’t huge and his followers ran well, he looked like he could have won any way he pleased. It’s the mark of a young man apparently poised to go for a national title. “I really hadn’t raced as much this season ... but I’ve had great training sessions,” he said. “So it was a great confidence booster to come out and actually execute and have a good race. Last year I think I was a little overraced, so I’ve taken a little softer approach racing-wise and training some more. It’s seemed to work out nicely.” Curtis was always near the lead, if not in it, save for one stretch in the second mile (“Coming down that hill, I was 7th, but I always run downhills slow.”) But he made that up by the 2-mile mark. “Going into the last 1200 I just felt really good,” he said, “so I started spreading it out a little bit. The third mile was probably my fastest mile.” Debole didn’t have a great Foot Locker Finals himself last year, taking 16th after his surprising runner-up finish in the South region. He also suffered a mid-season hiccup with a minor injury that contributed to a disappointing finish at Great American. But Saturday, Debole looked all the confident senior veteran rather than the wide-eyed junior of last year. “I certainly want to do a whole lot better because with 16th last year, I was happy about it, but it was not really what I was going for,” he confirmed. “This year I feel like I’m much more prepared. Certainly, these guys don’t intimidate me, I mean I respect them, but not the same as last year when I was in awe, I guess. I can run with those guys and I think it’s going to be a nice showdown this year. I think there’s a handful of guys, maybe 5 or 6, that can really go after this national title. And I hope I am going to be right up there with them.” As for his battle with Curtis, Debole said, “I kind of planned it that if we were together to have a little kickdown and go after it ... but he had about 15 meters on me coming down this last home stretch and the wind hit, and you’re just like, ‘Oh, boy!’ But I guess I was more concerned about just qualifying. I knew we were running fast anyway and the time would take care of the qualifying part.” Vital AssistanceDebole was one part of two pairs of quasi-teammates, you could say, in the top eight. After the North Carolina state meet, he and nearby rival Bobby Mack (just 5 miles apart) trained together with their focus on making it to San Diego. “So we’ve been doing most of our hard workouts together,” Debole said. We threw together a 3200m time trial last week, too ... and it went really well (8:56). I don’t know how that got out (laughs), but whatever! So our confidence level for this race was pretty high. And let’s say it didn’t hurt Debole’s confidence and psyche when Mack surged out into the lead in the first half mile. “That’s where he’s comfortable and that’s how he runs,” Debole said, adding with a laugh, “I was like, ‘C’mon back, Bobby, c’mon back. Don’t go too fast.’ And I’m really glad that both of us are going, because you feel so much more comfortable. We can hang out and stuff and really just go through it together.” As for Mack, also a senior, he was indeed clear on what his mission needed to be. “All I've been telling myself is I need to get out,” he said. “I know you can get trapped in the first 1000 meters and it's tough to move. ... The pack caught up with me and I just knew I needed to hang tough. I knew I wasn't one of the favorites, but if I had a good day, I could finish top eight. It worked out pretty good.” Mack, the 8th and final qualifier, felt the assistance of Debole as well. “He lives five minutes away from me ... He usually passes me at the mile, so I knew if I could just stay in the top eight, I would be ok. For a minute there. I was passed at two miles and fell back to ninth. Someone moved on me and I started to fade a little bit. I just needed to get over that hump.” The other set of “teammates” was Florida rivals Ryan Deak and Steve Hassen, who this time worked together to get them in nearly together in 3rd and 4th (Deak had the better kick). But the former, one of two juniors to qualify (the other six were seniors), also had last fall’s near-miss to motivate him. “It was quite disheartening,” he recalled. “It was a lot better going into the tent this year sitting on the other side of the table and qualified for San Diego.” Deak’s profile has been lower since his often meteoric rise took him to a 9-flat 3200 last spring at Arcadia as a soph. He shut it down well before the post-season, returned to Maclay and let little distract him from his mission in terms of monster races this fall. “I trained through my whole season, really,” he said. “I only peaked for Florida Runners and State. I was just hiding in the bushes, training all the time ... helping my teammates instead of racing all the time.” State meet, however, did tell Deak how ready he was. “I went out and hit the mile at 4:43 and the 2-mile at 9:40 and I felt good ... so I thought there’s no reason I can’t hit 9:40 and be up there in this race. ... For the first mile we had a pack of about 15 guys and everyone that was going to qualify was going to start picking it up and people were going to start dropping who went out too quick.” If any runner looked a little wide-eyed and giddy (“I know my mind’s running like a mile a minute!”), it was Hassen, who was grateful for Deak’s help and seemed more relieved than anything to have accomplished his goal. “It feels so good. Going in ... I was feeling very nervous yesterday and nervous today. But I felt confident and I knew that I had the ability to take it out there and run well. I think that I really had a good start and didn’t start out too fast; it was just about right.” “We knew the first mile was going to be fast – my coach and I talked about this – but we wanted to make sure the first 400 or 800 wasn’t too fast,” he continued. “It was a nice, even fast mile, instead of too fast at the beginning, then gradually slowing down. So about 800 in, I got up to the front and I got behind the leaders and I was kind of away from the front pack and I was able to hang on. I’m really happy I made it and really happy Ryan Deak made it. We really worked together today and I think that really paid off.” On the other hand, Virginia qualifier Kippy Keino was the picture of calm after the race. The senior also matched the hard, early pace, never more than a few steps off it, and held on fine to finish 5th. “I knew the runners at first were going to run really fast,” he said. “I wanted to stay out front and try to stick with the guys and try to move up because.” “Last year I didn’t really know what I was doing because it was my first time running the race,” he added. “I wanted to see how I could do in the race. This year, I really wanted to qualify and go to the national championship race. All of my training, the workouts and most of the races has helped me prepare for this race. ... It was perfect; it turned out the way I wanted, so I was happy.” Earning RecognitionCurtis, Debole and Deak weren’t the only runners set on making a statement. The Simpson brothers of West Virginia hadn’t really appeared on the national radar before Saturday, but it wasn’t from a lack of wanting on the part of Justin. The younger of the two twins (by a minute), he had an eye on this day for most of his career and, thanks to research that would impress any serious fan, knew where he could stand among his peers and historically in his home state. “I started training for this race starting my sophomore year and this year ... I keep track of everybody,” he said. “I knew everybody that quaified. A week ago I pretty much predicted it. And I picked me and my brother, too, because West Virginia doesn’t get that much credibility. Back in the 80s, Steve Taylor got third and Mikey Cox made it and I’m the third.” Simpson added that he likes meeting other runners, knowing everyone’s times and researching DyeStat. But all that hasn’t distracted him from his main goal. He said he’s averaged 70 miles a week for the last 18 weeks to move from the semi-elite to very-elite level. “I’ve been training for this race since after track ... started tapering last week. I was confident I could make it.” Justin’s less-race-experienced brother, Joshua, didn’t quite make it, finishing a very strong 10th. “I told him to follow me,” said Justin, who claimed 7th. “I was going to go after Steve Hassen of Florida. Get in 10th place as fast as I could. After 1000m I was 10th, so I just worked off the leaders the whole way. After that, I didn’t see my brother any more; I don’t look behind me, but usually he’s beside me. He still ran a good race and PR’d by 12 seconds or so.” These guys have just begun getting heard from. And you’ll also be hearing more about Brian Sullivan, the Texas junior who was better known as a prodigal miler until this fall’s UIL meet. There he claimed a state 5A title that some have called tainted since rival Kyle Miller collapsed while leading the race. “A lot of people were saying it was a hollow victory for me, that I didn’t deserve to win the state meet,” he said after taking 6th. “And to be fair, I had a lot of supporters. I just wanted to come out here and prove to everybody that I could run on the national level. My main goal was to run better than I did last year (28th), to run my best and not worry about what others were saying.” Sullivan, who will make the 9th appearance at a national FLCC meet for a The Woodlands HS runner, said that he hopes to move up in distance when he runs in college. Saturday, he used his speed more at the end of the race than the beginning. “For the first mile, I was in the back of the lead pack. But I knew that’s where I wanted to be, because they go out hard. I knew if I eased off a little bit, then I could move up as the race went on. By the 2-mile, I knew I was in good position.” And speaking of good position, the 8-member South boys team, having survived the cauldron of regionals, is ready to make a statement at nationals. “They look awesome,” Curtis said of his teammates. “We all ran well today and will probably post some of the faster regional times, so we should look to improve our third-place team finish from last year.” “We’re going to go down and have some fun and make some noise,” added Debole.
