Katie Albright stuns everyone with fastest time of day

Why wasn't Katie in the
seeded race?

There was confusion after the meet over why the fastest runner
of the day was in the freshman race instead of the seeded race where
she could have qualified for the national finals. Katie's entry
was sent in early but was incomplete, indicating she was a 9th grader
but not naming the race to enter. Katie's mother called meet headquarters
later to name the seeded race, and she said she was "discouraged"
by a meet official from entering the young runner in the seeded
race with more experienced girls.
Regional meet coordinator Max Mayo said the decision on which race
to run is totally up to the runner, and it can be changed up until
5 minutes before the race. Contrary to early reports, Mayo said
neither he nor meet referee Mary Sanford were asked about Albright's
entry before the race.
On Sunday, Katie's dad, Don Albright, sent this message to DyeStat:
"Thank you for the interview you did with her, it was wonderful.
It appeared from the updated article that Max Mayo might feel that
we hold him responsible for Katie not being in the seeded race.
I just want to let you know that we do not. We knew that the choice
was ours. I spoke with Max last night about this issue and it appears
to be a combination of mistakes on both sides, none having anything
to do with Max himself.
"The first mistake was sending the registration form in without
the level indicated, we knew we wanted the seeded race but did not
have the correct info. at the time.
"The second mistake was listening to whoever answered the
phone when Cathi (my wife) called to verify
registration and put her in the seeded race. The person told Cathi
that she was only fourteen and would be behind by a few minutes,
that the seeded race was champions from all over. Because it was
Katie's first footlocker race Cathi and Katie decided to take his
advice.
"The third mistake was not listening to Katie's coach, Rob
Craig, when he said run in the seeded anyway.
"All in all it worked out great, we have some family from
California in for the holidays which would have prevented her from
going to San Diego."

Katie's
story

This is the Katie Albright story.She goes by Katie, not Kate.
She ran the Wolfpack Invitational at NC State September 21 and finished
second to Merrill (who finished 6th in the South regional seeded
race). She was leading through the two mile and thought it was the
finish and stopped, thinking that she had won. Her final time was
19:59 for 5,240 meters.
Her Footlocker race was only her second race!
Albright: My coach is the one who told me about
Footlocker. I never knew about it. He’s the first one who
told me about it.
Cathy Albright (Mother): This is only her second
race.
Albright: I started running last June for junior
striders in Raleigh. I ran the 1500 and the 800 at state. I ran
the 1500 for regionals and nationals.
RQ: How did you do in those races?
Albright: I finished 6th in the nation for the
1500.
RQ: So you just started running this year.
Albright: yes sir.
RQ: Have you enjoyed much success?
Albright: Yes.
RQ: Have you lost this season?
Albright: I lost once at NC State. I finished second.
RQ: Are you competing for a high school?
Albright: No. I’m home schooled. The out
reach pastor at our old church let me come and join on his team
at Franklin Academy until I ran with a charter school. I trained
with that school for a while and then trained by myself.
RQ: What is your coaches name?
Albright: Rob Craig.
RQ: How did you meet him?
Albright: He’s from our old church. He’s
our out reach pastor. I’ve know him for about eleven years
or so.
RQ: Have you always been fast?
Albright: I played soccer. I beat some girls.
RQ: What do you think about soccer now?
Albright: I like both. I play with my brother and
his friends.
RQ: Do you still play soccer?
Albright: Yes sir.
RQ: You ran 17:51. Can you tell us why you weren’t
in the senior race?
Albright: My coach wanted me to be, but they discouraged
it because I was 14.
RQ: Knowing you ran this time and could have won
the seeded race, does that bother you?
Albright: No, I don’t mind. I had fun.
RQ: you don’t mind?
Albright: No.
RQ: You must have been leading by a lot.
Albright: I was actually more in the back when
they started and I made my way to the front.
Coach Craig: She was eight seconds ahead at the
mile and at the two mile mark, she was about 18 seconds ahead.
RQ: How does it feel to run this race?
Albright: Great. I hope to do it for God’s
glory one day.
