Boys

By Rich Gonzalez
1. Royal, Simi Valley
Ran without top runner, who was taking the SAT test. Has been their #1 runner at each race this year and last year, Would have had to finish a distant #5 for them at Clovis in order for the team to lose. Based on his absence for a legitimate reason, the team remains at #1 in California.

2. Don Lugo, Chino
Ran its best race of the year -- even better than when it placed a close fourth at Stanford. Instead of one frontrunner, it has two at Inland Empire -- Fistum Tesfa, who won at Stanford, and Alfred Gonzales just four seconds behind here. Also, their 1-to-5 gap was the smallest its been this year. Yes, it's still 84 seconds (was 117 seconds at Stanford), but they are chasing after perhaps the best runner in the state at this point in the season.

4. Murrieta Valley, Murrieta

While junior Patrick Milloy ran perhaps the race of his life -- within 13 seconds of tesfa on a flat course -- the rest of the Nighthawk's four scorers were more than a minute behind. With no other CIF-SS ranked team in the field, however, they still handily claimed the runner-up position.

5. Madera
An outstanding race led to the team title for the crew, with the front-running Benny Madrigal supported well by two chase tandems. Was only the second time this year the entire scoring group has been intact. Finished well ahead of #8 Ayala to reaffirm its superiority there. Likely will move up two spots in the NTN Region to #3 this week.

8. Ayala, Chino Hills
Turned everyone's heads at Clovis at its chase pack (3-4-5-6-7 men) closed well in the final stanges and then bunched up in finishing 39-40-41-42-43 for a stunning visual display! It was narrowly defeated by last week's state #11 team (Jesuit) and barely beat the state's #13 team (St. John Bosco). Will likely retain a spot in the Top 10.
