1. Royal, Simi Valley
With an ultra-test facing the team, previously rested Jason Pedersen made his season debut, lifting the U.S. #3 Highlanders to  narrow 10-point win over U.S. #4 Portland Jesuit.
Royal had 26-second gap for its scorers. Its #2 returnee from a year ago has yet to debut in 2004 due to injury, with his return status being deemed indefinite.

2. Don Lugo, Chino
Faced with the challenge of redeeming itself after a rare loss to a California team in a high-profile meet, the Conquistadores came out breathing fire at Stanford, falling a mere 9 points out of the runner-up position. Don Lugo's lead quartet is perhaps the best in the nation and the group could threaten for the national title if the depth comes along in the months to come!

3. El Camino, Oceanside
The team is ranking higher here than it placed at Stanford, due entirely to the absence of its healthy #3 runner in Palo Alto. That runner rested over the weekend and will compete solo at the Great American Cross-Country Festival in North Caroilina this weekend. Without him, El Camino showcased easily among the best 1-2 punches in the nation (A.J. Acosta and Randy Pensinger) via Top-5 individual finishes at Stanford. Has roughly a 110-second scoring gap when healthy, but the lead tandem is superb and the #3 is perhaps third-best in the state.

4. Dana Hills, Dana Point
The team seems content go purr smoothly through the opening month of the season each year, but the Dolphins provided a peek of what's to come after a dominating performance at its own invitational over the weekend. Depth is not an issue and the rumored solid summertime development by frontrunner Scott Smith (formerly a volleyball standout) was confirmed during a runaway victory!

5. Murrieta Valley, Murrieta

If there's any team that loves to seek challenges, it's the Nighthawks. At Stanford, however, the crew was hit by an 83-second scoring gap while having no one finish in the Top 10 -- a combination that send the MV program to a rare 5th-place showing. Holds key victory over Don Lugo in Week #2, and looks ahead to redemption down the road. They will be back!

6. Madera
Did not compete this weekend. Still awaiting the return of a key runner not medically cleared after inadvertantly slicing his finger off during a meat-cutting task.

7. Canyon, Canyon Country
Did not compete this weekend. Ran 1:02 behind top-ranked Royal in season-opening Seaside Invitational, over a windy 3.05-mile course.

8. El Toro, Lake Forest
We had them well on the radar at season's outset, then were a little baffled by a sub-par showing at Woodbridge despite boasting the race winner (Brandon Bethke). More than re-established itself at Stanford, where Brandon Bethke was among the leaders, then the remaining quartet gapping a fine 32 seconds.

9. North Monterey County, Castroville
Having established itself as a regional force even without frontrunner Nathan Huerta in recent weeks, the Condors welcomed him back at Stanford and earned top billing over former Regional #10 Jesuit (at #12 this week) in winning the Division II race. Four outstanding runners key the attack, then a very respectable 5th man seals the winning deal.

For the second straight week Murrieta Valley had an excellent pack with its No. 1 runner Liana Boucher finishing in just eighth in the Division I Sweepstakes race but keeping a very tight group that gapped just 27 seconds and won the team title. It is also interesting to note that the Nighthawks would have won a mythical race that combined all five divisions at Stanford.

Corona del Mar (Newport Beach)
Coach Bill Sumner put together (with one major exception) it’s “A” for the first time in the Division III race at Stanford. Leading the way was freshman Allison Damon who place eighth in 19:12 in only her fourth race. Not just her fourth race for Corona del Mar but her fourth race……ever. The Sea Kings (or is it Sea Queens) placed third behind South Lake Tahoe and California No. 2 Maria Carillo (Santa Rosa) and would have finished eleventh in a mythical all-team race. The one major exception to the “A” team was the absence of Corona del Mar’s No. 1 runner Annie St. Geme, who is resting with a slight injury but is still training and expected to be back and three weeks or so. Last year St. Geme dipped under 4:50 for 1,600 meters. If you factor in St. Geme with a time of around 18:00 it puts CdM in the upper tier of cross country teams.
