Boys - Girls - Woodbridge Invitational

#1 Royal boys show depth again on Woodbridge Invitational speedway under the lights before 5,000 fans.

Boys

1. Royal, Simi Valley
For a second consecutive week, the short-handed Highlanders tore through ample competition, this time while at the blockbuster Woodbridge Invitational. Despite resting out Jason Pedersen (#2 returnee) and Kevin Sullivan (#3 returnee) as they conservatively recover from injury, a 13-point victory resulted in their meet over an at-full-strength nationally ranked squad. Royal also has been tearing through very strenuous hill workouts of late, and seemingly arriving to meets with tired legs -- only to continue winning.
Ran shorthanded to a 76:58 on very, very fast and flat 3-miler under the lights in front of crowd of 5,000 (add 45-48 seconds to convert to moderately difficult 5k course). Spread here at Woodbridge was 0:58 seconds; more importantly, had an All-American candidate up front, then a mere 26-second gap from 2-5, so they are truly without weakness at the support positions. It's time to bump them even better in the national rankings

INDIVIDUAL:
1. Brandon Bethke (El Toro)           14:22   (4:09 for 1600m in track and Golden West mile champ)

33. Michael Cybulski (Royal)         15:25

56. Daniel Benson (Royal)              15:45
97. Jun Reichl (Royal)                      16:14
112. Dustin Patterson (Royal)        16:24
There were 169 runners in the race.
Note: Royal rested out its #2 and #3

2. Murrieta Valley, Murrieta
At full strength for Woodbridge, and had a very good scoring tandem up front. Good support also at the 3-4 positions, but a gap to #5. Ran 76:44 for the same flat and very fast 3-mile course noted above, losing by 13 points in a 22-team race that featured five very solid squads finishing at full strength. Spread was 1:15 for its scorers. Was at #23 in initial national poll... showings thus far indicate no need for considerable movement in either direction on the national scale.

113. Stephen Rutgers (Murrieta Valley)           16:24
There were 169 runners in the race.

3. Don Lugo, Chino
The Conquistadores were plagued when their #5 man was trampled among 15-plus-runner spill about 100 meters into the Woodbridge race, with no re-start; he finished way back and the team placed 4th. When they had a distant 5-6-7 at season opener at Colton, coach intimated the severe heat of the 'flight' races (in the 90s by the time the young ones raced) was the reason. This time, their #5 took a nasty spill. Regardless, the question entering 2004 centered on developing a #5 man, and they are 0-for-2 thus far. Will need to prove it is a Top 25 team (which should not be a problem down the road, especially on the championship courses). They eventually might be a sensational team, but a 98-second scoring gap right now is a bit too much, especially since 31 seconds of it come on the back end with three scorers being involved in it.

15. Alfred Gonzales (Don Lugo)          14:56
49. Cesar Mercado (Don Lugo)           15:43
57. Alex Mercado (Don Lugo)             15:46   <-----  #3, 4 and 5 all more than a minute behind its first scorer.
98. Brian Roser (Don Lugo)                 16:14
151 Alfred Hernandez (Don Lugo)      17:14
166. Franco Guaddarama (Don Lugo) 18:43
There were 169 runners in the race.

4. Madera
Ran 78:17 with 39-second spread for very fast 3-miler to finish 5th at Woodbridge. A key scorer was sidelined by doctor's orders after accidentally slicing off a thumb during freak meat-cutting incident afew weeks ago. If keeping usual order when at full strength, would have likely placed third (behind only Royal and Murrieta Valley) at this meet. Oh well... woulda, coulda, shoulda.

111. Anthony Solis (Madera)               16:23
(Note: One Madera runner did not finish diue to injury.)
There were 169 runners in the race.

5. Canyon, Canyon Country
Did not compete this weekend. Ran 1:02 behind top-ranked Royal in season-opening Seaside Invitational, over a windy 3.05-mile course.

6. El Camino, Oceanside
Depth is lacking here, as a superb lead tandem gives way to a massive 102-second gap along the fairly tricky and challenging Morley Field 2.95-mile version of the FootLocker Nationals course. With two scorers currently not within 90 seconds of their lead tandem, that's just too much of a gap in California at this time. Also will be missing its #3 runner at the Stanford Invitational this weekend.

MT. CARMEL INVITATIONAL @ Morley Field

Seniors:
1. Randy Pensinger (El Camino) 15:11

Overall Team Times:
1. El Camino, Oceanside              79:40
2. Loyola, Los Angeles               80:30
3. Dana Hills                                  81:02

7. De La Salle, Concord
Finished second to nationally-ranked Christian Bros. Academy at the De La Salle/Carondelet Invitational over the weekend. No doubt pointing to this meet on its calendar for some time, the DLS crew fared well in finishing just over two minutes off CBA (79:48 to 81:56) in a 30-61 loss in a 14-team race of very little depth. Doing cross comparisons with the other key team here (McFarland from Central California), De LaSalle fits in at this position. Would have projected to score 198 points at Woodbridge, based on conversions (and finish sixth)

8. Ayala, Chino Hills
Placed seventh at Woodbridge Invitational (6th among California teams) with 211 points and a 78:21 team time. Gap of 1:10.

9. Upland
Placed sixth at Woodbridge Invitational (5th among California teams) with 207 points and 78:39 on a 3-miler as fast as they come. Scoring spread was 43 seconds. Was shorthanded in week #1 when it lost to three unranked teams, but showed its worth this time out.

1. Fountain Valley

Woodbridge Inv., 3 miles/Sept. 18
After two dual meets and a heavy workout schedule Fountain Valley chose to run the Division I race rather than the Sweepstakes Race where they had the second fastest time of the meet 30 seconds behind Maria Carillo. In view of the fact varsity freshmen Anja DiSiena and Kristen Lake were rested the Barons appear to be on track for a very strong season. Next invitational at Huntington Beach this weekend.

Last year varsity performer Becky Pensklar is still resting with a slight injury. No invitationals this weekend

4. Murrieta Valley (Murrieta)
Woodbridge Inv., 3 miles/Sept. 18
Two weeks ago the 1-5 gap was 1:16 while at Woodbridge it dropped to just 10 seconds but that was not by design. No. 1 Liana Boucher was sick the entire week and No. 2 Karen Camburn was nursing a slight injury so the group just got a lot tighter. Randik Alvardo did step up with fine 18:24. Nighthawks will be at Stanford in Division I sweepstakes race this weekend.

Woodbridge Inv., 3 miles/Sept. 18
For the second straight week Maria Carillo was at the top of its game. Two weeks ago it was a very close four point loss to Miramonte (Orinda) and this last week a great win at Woodbridge. No. 1 Kristen Sanzari was not in the top six at Ed Sias. Will be at Stanford in Division. 3 this weekend.
