Kenny Klotz - 4A Boys 3000m (US#1) and 1500m Champion

Isaac Stoutenburgh leads Kenny Klotz and Jerhoemee Murray

The pre-meet buzz surrounding the 4A boys distance events involved a pair of Footlocker finalists headed to the University of Oregon next fall, Central Catholic’s Kenny Klotz and Crater’s Isaac Stoutenburg. In the 3000, the early laps held true to form, with Stoutenburg taking the lead after the first turn and pulling a strung-out field through splits of 66.6 and 2:10.8.   By 1200 meters (3:18.0) the lead pack had been whittled to Stoutenburg, Klotz and a less-heralded runner who would make a name for himself this weekend—Century senior Jerhoemee Murray.  After reaching 1600 in 4:27.7, Klotz surged through the curve and rolled down the homestretch, Murray hanging close.  They pulled well-clear of Stoutenburg in the ensuing laps, but Klotz was unable to shake a determined Murray. “I knew he was pretty quick,” Klotz said, “but I thought I took it out of him during the race and then I just tried to kick it in hard.” On the final curve, Klotz did exactly that, digging for another gear and powering home with a 3 second PR and US#1 8:18.35.  Murray dropped a 14-second PR himself, crossing second in 8:24.15.

In Saturday’s 1500m final, the results were remarkably similar.  Murray and Stoutenburg led through 400 in 64.9, leaving Klotz boxed in a tight pack behind.  Halfway through the second lap Klotz worked loose, jostling with his two adversaries for the lead.  Stoutenberg charged clear and passed 800 in 2:09.5, with Klotz and Murray trailing.  After covering a Klotz surge at 900m, Stoutenburg nudged ahead at the bell and led through 1200 in 3:11.1.  Down the backstretch, Klotz swung wide and powered away with only Murray in tow.  Murray made a game attempt off the final curve, but Klotz again had something in reserve and drove triumphantly down the homestretch—for the second time in as many days—past the legendary West Grandstand. It’s something he hopes to replicate in the years ahead. “I’m really looking forward to coming here next year to run,” he said.  Final time: 3:55.23, with Murray second in 3:56.67.

New Oregon State Record Holder in the 800m, Ryan Waite

Ryan Waite – 4A Boys 800m (US#1) and 4x400m Relay Champion

Ryan Waite, the defending 4A champion from St. Helen’s High, came into the meet hoping to take down Michael McGrath’s three year-old Oregon mark of 1:48.56.  He had to settle for toppling a twenty-seven year-old state meet record and dropping the fastest 800 time in the nation this season.  “I really wanted to go for sub-1:50 today,” the Oregon-bound senior said, “but the weather wasn’t cooperative, and it’s really hard to do that by yourself, to just go out and lead the whole way.”  Waite’s plan was to surge to the front from the break, and never look back, and that’s exactly what he did.  He dragged a lingering field through 400m in 54.7 before moving strongly through the curve and cranking down the backstretch.  In the final 100 meters, the tall, powerful Waite was all alone, stopping the clock in 1:50.67, two seconds clear of charging Central Catholic sophomore Taylor Morgan (1:52.33).  Waite wasn’t too disappointed at coming up short on McGrath’s record, though he’s still shooting for sub-1:50 this season. “It’s great to know,” he said afterwards, “that next year when the state program comes out, for the meet record it will say ‘Ryan Waite.’  That’s a great feeling.”

A little more than an hour later, Waite left the Hayward Field fans with something else to talk about next year.  Taking the baton in second place for his St. Helen’s 4x400 team, a few meters down on Jesuit star sprinter Seth Tarver, Waite unfurled an epic anchor. He stalked Tarver through the curve and inched ahead down the backstretch, electrifying the crowd.  Off the final turn, he barely held off a surging Tarver, crossing the line in 3:21.28 to Jesuit’s 3:21.62.  Spent but jubilant, he thrust the baton in the air and fell into the embrace of his celebrating teammates.

Bianca Mathabane – 4A Girls 300m and 100m Hurdles Champion, 4th in 100m

The defending 4A champion in both hurdles events, Lincoln junior Bianca Mathabane tackled the 100m this year, finishing fourth in 12.61 and leaving herself little time to prepare for the 100 hurdles. It didn’t matter.  Running out of lane 4, Mathabane blistered the rain-slick straight in 14.32, distancing her competition by a full hurdle and breaking her own 4A state meet record.  Afterwards, she spent the interim between events concentrating on the challenging longer race.  “I had no time between the 100 and the 100 hurdles, so I definitely tried to get in the zone before the 300 [hurdles].  I spend my whole season trying to get that focus down for States.”  Her focus paid off, as Mathabane came back to dominate her second race of the day.  She had made up the stagger on the field by the top of the straight, and hammered home untouched in 44.07 (Alyssa Rife, Southridge, 2nd in 45.31).
