Ferris WA boys reverse regional loss. Bellarmine WA girls win 6th girl tie breaker to beat Gig Harbor. Jesuit sweeps OR titles. Brie Felnagle breaks course record.

Boys

Washington State Championships

US#5 NW#1 Ferris (46) proves their readiness for the Nike Team Nationals event by winning Washington State 4A title over US#16 NW#4 Mead (92) and US#13 NW#4 Eisenhower (104). Ferris was led by seniors Ben Poffenroth and Brendan Chestnut in 15:40 and 15:50; top five ran 16:00 or faster.

Sr Kelly Spady (Kamiak HS) wins final 20m showdown at Washington State meet over Sr Robbie Barany (Eisenhower); both were timed in 15:24.

Oregon State Championships

Oregon’s US#6 NW#2 Jesuit (62) finishes in style with 64 point win over Unranked South Eugene, NW#6 Crater (126, #3), NW#8 Central Catholic and NW#7 Hermiston. Led by seniors Michael Maag and John Maletis in 15:47 and 15:57 for slow course.

Central Catholic Jr Kenny Klotz unleashes on talented field for 11-second win in 15:35 over Summit HS Sr Kenyon Neuman (15:46).

Girls

Washington State Championships

US#9 NW#2 Bellarmine Prep (84) pulls off dramatic sixth-runner tie-breaker over NW#6 Gig Harbor (84); NW#4 Snohomish (90) places third with #3 runner injured.

Bellarmine Sr Brie Felnagle captures her second straight individual title and breaks 5k course record of 18:10 with her solo 17:53 effort.

Oregon State Championships

US#11 NW#3 Jesuit continues to roll, winning by 58 points over NW#8 Sheldon (126, #2OR), Unranked Summit HS (149, #3OR) and NW#4 South Eugene (163, #4OR).

Bend HS So Kimber Mattox wins her first state title in first full season of cross country. Her time of 18:19 on slow course conditions equals similar 17:50 effort, outdistancing that of 2003 BorderClash Champ and Oregon State Champ Katie Leary (18:03).

1. Eisenhower Yakima WA

After Eastern 4A Regional win over NW#2 Ferris and NW#4 Mead, Ike's #3 and #4 runners had off-day at Pasco. Barany and Cummings represent strongest 1-2 finish by teammates since 2001’s 1-2 finish by Mead brothers Chris Fayant and Jesse Fayant, who both later competed for the University of Washington.

2. Joel Ferris, Spokane WA

It’s official! Ferris is the best team in Washington for 2004, and possibly the northwest following their state meet effort to win by 56 points with the fastest team time average of 15:53 since University HS averaged 15:50 in 1998 with three future All-American athletes on board. #2 runner So Robert Cosby had off-day in running 15:52 (ran 15:29 three weeks ago), and former middle school Junior Olympic star Sr Ben Poffenroth ran the race of his life to placed 5th overall and lead Ferris to their second straight title.

3. US#3 Jesuit Portland OR
Jesuit caps off their best season to recent date by a 64 point margin. According to Head Coach Tom Rothenberger, this was their finest effort of the season as a whole. Converting the times by dropping 25 seconds from each time results in amazing marks of 15:22, 15:32, 15:40, 16:08, 16:10 up front.

Team ran very impressively without #1 runner Jordan McNamara in line-up. He has been out for four weeks with stress fracture and has not fully recovered. Had McNamara been in line-up, team would’ve placed 3rd behind Mead with approximately 95 to 100 points based off McNamara’s prior fitness of a sub 16:00 athlete.

Another impressive peak for the Central Catholic coaching staff. Had #2 runner Jr Stephen Oliver finished where he has run all season (15:40 fast 5k) the team would have finished in second-place with approximately 55 points further ahead, giving them 75 points. Oliver was tripped and fell down hard, tried to rejoin the race but could not make a return.

2. Bellarmine Prep University Place WA
For the third season in a row, Bellarmine Head Coach Matt Ellis had confidence in his girls to take home a state title. He finally got his wish. After #5 runner Sarah Lorch became ill the week prior, the team was hoping their combined efforts would be enough to offset the balance. “A state title is a state title,” said Ellis, overjoyed that his girls got their dream wish.

“I didn’t think we’d won,” said Gig Harbor Head Coach Patty Ley. She had nearly conceded the victory to either Bellarmine Prep or Snohomish, only to find out the results had came down to a tie. Gig’s #6 was a mere 10-seconds behind Bellarmine’s. Also, #5 runner Gabrielle Seifert (19:46 at district meet) had off day, with similar effort would have dropped team score by approximately 10 points for a win. Overall, team competed their best to date.
