Boys

1. US#3 Jesuit Portland OR

Posting their best performance this season, the Jesuit boys were certain they were the team to beat, and they were. Michael Maag insisted on placing top-five to lead his team in a PR 15:26. Jesuit #7 runner Matt Smith stepped up huge for the crusaders to place #5 on the team, going 16:09 (previous best in 16:30’s). Coach Tom Rothenberger said he is pleased with his team’s effort and their marks, however the boys may have a different opinion. Little did the Jesuit front seven know, but they placed second to one of the finest performances by any high school cross country team in US history, second-best for a Washington team ever!

Impressive showing despite leaving #5 Daniel Cadigan out of line-up. All top-five runners improved upon Northwest Classic performance two weeks prior. With Cadigan running in line-up, team would have still likely placed 9th or 10th. Was their best performance of the season, but against northwest powers and Oregon’s finest appeared less than the great effort they put forth. Two weeks will settle everything.

Front-runners Jose Juarez and Lorenzo Gonzalez improved 16 and 19 seconds respectively from two weeks ago, and as a team their front five dropped an average of 22 seconds from an already impressive effort at the Northwest Classic, placing third to NW#6 Central Catholic and NW#7 South Eugene; this time they would conquer over both for the first time this season.

2. Bellarmine Prep University Place WA

Matt Ellis’ girls finally arrived. They have been waiting for this chance meeting with Jesuit and Los Alamos all season, placing less emphasis on prior meets, moreso than Sunfair where runners are separated by each individual into flights. Bellarmine #2 Nicole Cochran is beginning to believe she is capable of helping Bellarmine to a 1-2 finish at the WA State Championships behind teammate and Foot Locker National hopeful Brie Felnagle. BP #3 runner Megan Kelly blazed her final 1000m, passing several runners, BP #4 Sarah Lorch favors hillier courses morso but still managed a solid 19:44, and BP#5 (usually #4) Rita Troup ran #5 for her team while feeling ill. Coach Matt Ellis insists the team is holding their peak performances for the WA State Championships and for the Nike Team National event. They are the clear favorites to win the 2004 Washington State Championships in two weeks.
Note: Los Alamos was ranked US#3 prior to the event.

With a healthy Bailey Schutte back in the line-up, the lady Crusaders were ready to continue on their dominant path, and rightfully did so, overcoming US#3 Los Alamos by a mere two points. Besides their usual fast marks, Jesuit #4 Anna Imperati finished #3 for her team, just ahead of Katie Sullivan, dropping 32 seconds from her Puma Classic performance. Again, Head Coach Tom Rothenberger was very proud and pleased with his girls’ performance. They are the clear favorites to win the 2004 Oregon State Championships in two weeks.
