Jesuit Crusaders Storm Eugene

by Leo Collins

Boys

On a quite cool day in Oregon, the Crusaders of Jesuit High School laid siege to Lane County Community College and swept aside their competition. When the proverbial dust had settled there was no question as to who was the top team in both contests, as Jesuit had scored overwhelming victories. The girls won by 58 points while the boys could have doubled their 62 points & still win the meet. Happily it was witnessed by the largest crowd in years.

It was the girl's team that led the first charge over a course that was surprisingly soggy in numerous places. The combatants also had to deal with an inconsistent yet strong wind, which had to have an adverse effect upon all the runners. With the gun a throng of runners surged across the open field & head toward the hill at the edge of the track. Central Catholic's Annaliese Chapa had a slight lead for a bit shortly before reaching the track but there were too many runners vying for position to call anyone a true leader. They remained in a large yet tight pack as they covered the first half mile & then went out of sight.

Heading down the hill a bit afterwards Kimber Mattox of Bend had forged a slight lead with Chapa trailing by about 5 yards. Kimber reached the announced mile mark in 5:43 with Chapa still trailing. Back by about 15 yeards were Kendell Nelson of Crater, Jennifer Macias of Hermiston, Patricia Loughlin of Jesuit & Traci Newton of Canby. Reaching the pond at the far end of the course Maddox extended her lead to 15 yards & then 30. She had created a gap of 50 yards in the time that it took to traverse the ½ mile around the pond & reached the 2 mile mark in 11:37. The valiant Chapa pushed on alone as Macias & Nelson were joined by Claire Michel of Clackamas. Cresting the hill again the Bend runner looked ever stronger & more fluid in her stride leaving the individual outcome no longer in doubt.

Although the battle for first had ended the struggle for second had altered considerably as Michel charged up the hill with Nelson just a bit behind. First Michel & then Nelson passed the struggling Chapa & ominously a second pack that included Sheldon's Casey Masterson, Jen Macias & Pat Loughlin closed also. Nelson moved into 2 nd briefly but Michel, who was experiencing a stitch, answered with a surge of her own.

Out in front the Bend runner continued to stretch her lead while Michel surged into second by the time they had returned to the pond before heading to the track. With but half a mile left the race for second was essentially over too but behind her a even more runners jockeyed for position while Chapa struggled to maintain hers. Mattox reached the finish & garnered a victory by almost ½ a minute over Michel. Macias of Hermiston, who ran a brilliantly controlled race, placed 3 rd followed closely by Masterson, who had led her team to second place. Natalie Todd-Zebell of Grant was but a second behind while Jesuit leader Loughlin was only 1 second behind.

For Kimber Mattox, who had participated in her team's soccer playoff victory the day before, the early morning runs at 5 AM had been vindicated & she was a gracious winner, who recognized her competition. Claire Michel appeared as relieved as she was happy & has to be credited with a masterful strategy. In an oddity that has to make next year's State Meet enticing not only were the first two runners sophomores but Macias & Masterson, who placed 3 rd & 4 th , were also sophs. Senior Patricia Laughlin, of course, will not be back but she led her team to a title ably supported by teammates Katie Sullivan (12 th ), Samantha Sondag (19), Katie Humm (28) & Bailey Schutte (34). The one sad aspect in the race was that it did not feature Coquille's Holly Dieu, who ran in the division 3 race and won with a time of 18: 18. Her presence would have made for even more fireworks. Also of note is Ilsa Paulson of Sherwood. At one point she appeared to be struggling, but somehow she kept it together. Not only did the almost neophyte (she only started running in August) runner place second but she chalked up the 3 rd fasterst female time of the entire day.

The vagaries of running are many and all runners do not have the luck to be on at the State Meet. Sadly the valiant Chapa, who made it a race from the start, dropped out with about ½ mile to go. Erin Gray, a former state champion, was able to place only 27 th . It is sad to have to suffer an off day in such an important race but she gave us many grand races & happy memories. Even there, however, is a lesson & there is much to be said about their struggling in spite of off days. In a way they are winners too.

Jesuit Act II

Oregon Boys 4A

by Leo Collins

The race for the title among the boys was an intriguing one. Unlike the girls, who appeared to have a clear favorite, the guys had a number of aspirants, for each of whom could be made a serious case for victory at day's end. It was a group of contenders that, although at times one group of four might seem to have an edge when contemplating the race on one day it was difficult to ever maintain the feeling that any one runner could truly be called a favorite. As fate would have it, that is how the race story unfolded.

It might be worth a moment to describe the course in Eugene . The group starts in a large open field which allows for a sprint across to its opposite side, where there is a hill at the side of the track. It is not really steep yet it lasts for about 30 yards & has enough of a grade to make it a factor later in the race. Upon reaching the top of the hill they reach a narrow plateau area that follows half of the rectangle & then continues on along a soccer field,. Following the same pattern the course does a good part of that half of a rectangle & then turns again while still on top of the plateau. Around 100 meters later the runners reach an area removed from sight that has some slight rolling hills but mostly a long gentle decline. A bit before reaching the mile mark the course reaches the bottom by the main road, which is flat but is somewhat difficult to handle as one runs on the side of a ditch that forces runners to run with one leg a bit above the other. It also happened to be rather sloppy there. It remains as such for around 80 yards until it passes the baseball field & reaches the area in which the runners started. From there the runners no longer have to deal with the uneven stride area as they continue to follow along the main road. One plus meters later they find the pond at the far outside of the course & the course remains flat as they circle the pond.

After the runners return to the point that they first reached the pond the course takes a sharp left, where they quickly reach the 2 mile point but the course remains flat as they head back to the hill at the side of the track. It's a good 300 yards of flat surface to reach the hill, which is notably more difficult the second time around. Back on the plateau the course follows the same course around the sides of the track & the soccer field. It should also be noted that in former days the runners used to go down a short but steep grade to cross the soccer field itself & then climb back up a steep hill at the other side (picture a wide retention ditch & you get the proper feel). Removing this aspect of the course has made the course distinctly easier than earlier runners had to face. At any rate shortly after the last turn at the soccer field the runners go back down a short but steep grade to reach the baseball field. Upon reaching the bottom it is flat the rest of the way. At the far end of the diamond they reach the road & part of the uneven area where they make their turn. Fans can see most of this last part reasonably well except for the most remote parts & the area where the diamond is surrounded by a fence. From the ball field it's a flat & straight shot back to the pond where the runners hang a left for a flat & fast race back to the track & the remaining three-quarters of the track. It is there where numerous late stretch runs have resulted with the memorable recent race between Lauren Jesperson & Galen Rupp.

If fans harbored thoughts of various scenarios with numerous possible leaders, the race continued that thought. For a brief moment there was the mad thought that there might be a runaway as one gallant runner broke from the pack as he went up the hill and continued to surge after reaching the top. He led for possibly 100 yards before being swallowed up by pack. It would be some time before there would be a clear leader again, as Devin McDaniel, Isaac Stoutenberg, Zuber Ahmed, David Morgan, Michael Maag, Andy Wright, Jeff Randall & Kenny Klotz all vied for the lead in varying combinations of the aforementioned. Still no one had any real lead or seeming control of the pace. Even this short list of aspirants must be slighting a few as this group could barely be said to be separate from a large group of others who trailed just slightly behind.

The throng managed to stay together until they reached the pond and the mid-point of the race. It was at this point that attrition finally set in & it melted the throng into a Big 8'. There still, however, was no discernable leader. No change resulted in the loop around the pond and the group made the turn back to the track together. Running in tandem one began to wonder, if the race would come down to one mad dash at the very end once they reached the track. That question was answered as Central Catholic's Kenny Klotz made a bold move on the hill & bolted from the pack. Oddly enough after the race he noted that he had expected some runner to make a move to go ahead & had only intended at one time to be ready to respond to any move that might come. Now for most runners, no matter what level of ability, there is a certain ebb & flow to a race, when one alternately feels well & to some degree not so comfortable. Klotz noted that the race did not work that way for him as he felt well at the beginning and felt even better, even stronger, during the second half of the race. Taking advantage of the moment he increased his pace after cresting the hill to seize a rather quickly reached 20 yard lead.

The move having been made did not receive a valid response from the others. Although they increased their pace they could not cover the surge. The trailing pack stayed together for a bit but then separated after going down the hill. Past the ball field there was little doubt that the race belonged to a second Central Catholic runner in a row. Behind him Kenyon Neuman of Summit & Michael Maag of Jesuit waged a battle for 2 nd & 3 rd . Benson's Zuber Ahmed struggle to close the gap as he headed a group made up of Andy Wright, Isaac Stoutenberg. Only five yards removed were Devin McDaniel of Sandy , who seemed to be faltering, and Jeff Randall.

The final stage of the race saw little change to the order & in the end Klotz had achieved a well deserved yet somewhat surprising victory. Neuman maintained 2 nd ahead of Maag of Jesuit, who led his team to an overwhelming 64 point victory. South Eugene led by Dustin Moore's 13 th place finish overcame the up-front firepower of Crater to manage a tie at 126, counting the top five runners & took second on the 6 th man tie-breaker. Central Catholic managed to score 126 points to place fourth in the meet in spite of one of their leaders, Stephen Oliver, going down in the race. He was taken to the hospital & released after treatment for dehydration. Had he been able to finish Central would surely have taken second but Jesuit would have won no matter his finish as the other 4 runners already had a total of 68 points.

In other divisions Krista Stengel of Enterprise easliy won the girl's 2A/!A race defeating defending champion Jolee Van Leuven of Catlin Gable with a time of 19:12. Catlin Gable won the team scoring in the division with a 74 84 victory over Central Linn . Brad Taylor's time of 16:00 easily bested the boy's in that division as McKenzie won the tam title with a 97 124 victory over Oakridge. As mentioned before Holly Dieu (18:18) & Ilsa Paulson (18:39) were impressive in the girl's 3A while Siuslaw claimed the championship. Adam Pino placed 2 nd in the boy's 3A but led Siuslaw to an easy team victory over Elmira . The State individual trophy went to Scott Sanders of Brookings with a time of 16:04. It was another notable day for Oregon Cross Country.

GIRLS

Bend HS So Kimber Mattox 18:09 wins first 4A state individual title after withdrawing from 2003 contest the day before the meet. She also plays soccer for Bend HS and played all 90 minutes of game on Friday, the day before. The game went down to final kickoffs, where she added a goal of her own.

Kimber had never previously seen the state meet course, so Bend Coach Randy Dalzell and Mattox visited the course at 8:30am this morning to jog over first two miles of course for review.

Team: Jesuit rolls to third straight team title (62pts) by 58 points with #2 and #4 runners having off day by 30 to 45 seconds. They finished 6-12-19-28-34-64-69 in a field of 152.

BOYS

Central Catholic continues their tradition after the graduation of 13:37 5000rm runner Galen Rupp with a newfound talent Jr Kenny Klotz. Klotz took advantage of the field by taking off earlier than his opponents at 800m to go, never looking back. His time of 15:35 may be pedestrian, however against several sub15:20 athletes in the field, his 11-second win must have felt near a 15:00 effort.

Team: Jesuit (62 pts) boys cap off most impressive season in their recent history to win by 64 points over several of northwest's best teams. Second through sixth place were separated by only 12 points. Fourth-place Central Catholic's #2 runner Stephen Oliver fell down very hard near mile mark and dropped out of race. He has recently run 15:40 at the Nike Jim Danner Inivitational, and with a comparable performance would have placed top 10 and helped his team to a definite second-place showing with 75 to 80 points. This entire season has seen the second through sixth-place teams flip flop placings and personal bests throughout the entire regular season. 1 Jesuit 62 2 South Eugene 126 3 Crater 126 4 Central Catholic 130 5 Hermiston 135 6 Lincoln 138

OVERALL the course ran very slow due to recent onset of extended periods of rain and moisture. Course ran 20-30 seconds slow for boys times and 30-40 seconds slow for girls times....couldn't believe the same course could run so slow, but did. There are a number of talented kids in the field with times 20-25 seconds off their usual (not just a couple, but many). Usually, if the weather has been good prior to, the Lane course runs VERY fast.

Handicapping the meet -- Without a Dobson, Jesperson or Rupp, boys race is wide open this year. Kimber Mattox gets a slight nod in girls race. Jesuit favored for both team titles.

by Leo Collins

The first weekend in November invariably brings with it the State Cross Country Championship, which is always anticipated. This year unlike in recent years the boys' individual race would appear to be a wide-open contest. There is not a dominant number one or two who stand out above the crowd like a Dobson, Jesperson or Rupp. Rather there is a strong group of contenders, who on any given day are more than capable of wearing the mantle of champion. They are so close in fact that, at least in my mind the proverbial pecking order changes a bit each time that it is contemplated. Still it adds a little spice to the event to make some predictions and what follows is an attempt to handicap the event.

As a caution it should be noted that very few of the runners have faced each other more than once & each course has its own idiosyncrasy. The state course, although not challenging, offers some hills, which in most cases makes a number of previous times a bit irrelevant. For my part each of the participants has been seen at least once yet in each case there has been some sort of a qualifier. The preference is to narrow the likely champion down to a group of four but then again it could be a so-called Big 5' or even 6'. Isaac Stoutenberg of Crater has the best time in the state thus far & was very impressive in the Danner meet, yet until he made a wrong turn the thought was that Kenyon Newman of Summit looked the most fluid. Newman also defeated Stoutenberg & Ahmed at Puma. Devon McDaniel of Sandy was very impressive at Bush Pasture in Salem while Zuber Ahmed of Benson unleashed a very potent kick at District to roll away from an excellent Duke Wasteney of Lincoln . David Morgan of Ashland has also been impressive & could easily be considered a logical choice along with Jeff Randall of Sheldon & possibly Michael Maag of Jesuit.

Still the thought persists that Kenyon Newman has a slight edge over Stoutenberg, although I concede they were switched in my mind just yesterday. If Ahmed can hang with those two & McDaniel then all bets are off given his kick & the fact that he appears to be peaking at the right time. McDaniel for his part seems to have a slight advantage on the hills, which could be a distinct aid to his cause. Following not far behind Morgan, Randall, Maag & Kenny Klotz of Central Catholic should be in the mix. Others with considerable talent are Andy Wright of Ashland, Michael Maletis of Jesuit, Steve Oliver of Central Catholic, Duke Wasteney, & Bryan Davenport of Beaverton.

It will be interesting to see who sets the pace and that will likely go far in determining the winner. It is not anticipated that there will be someone setting a formidable pace as Galen Rupp did two years ago, when he pushed the pace against Jesperson. Memory recalls, however, a pedestrian pace of 5:10 that allowed Jason Maschmeyer of Churchill to defeat Dan Browne of West Linn with his 48 second last quarter speed. A slow pace would not bode well with the Benson star ready to unleash his formidable kick, but setting a pace is not an easy thing to do. To say the least it will be most interesting to see the race unfold but for arguments sake here is a list with which to play. Hopefully those, who feel slighted, will use it as incentive.

Boys Individual Picks

1) Kenyon Newman Summit
2) Isaac Stoutenberg Crater
3) Zuber Ahmed Benson
4) Devon McDaniel Sandy
5) David Morgan Ashland
6) Jeff Randall Sheldon
7) Michael Maag Jesuit
7) Ken Klotz Central Catholic
8) Andy Wright Ashland
8) Michael Maletis Jesuit
9) Steve Oliver Cent Cath
10) Duke Wasteney Lincoln

In the race for the team championship Jesuit would appear to be all but a lock. They not only have the two leaders already mentioned but a very solid supporting cast. They are in fact deep enough that two runners in their top 5 could have a bad day, & their 6 th or 7 th runner could pick up the slack. No other team seems to have anything close to that. For most teams there is too great a gap between their runners in the top five alone. If Jesuit is solid then Crater would appear to be distinctly formidable given both their depth & front-runners and, in spite of the coaches' poll, they appear to be a solid guess for second.

After them there is not a great deal of difference among the others. Hermiston has a solid team & is currently ranked 3 rd while Central Catholic, Lincoln , South Eugene , Canby & Forest Grove could make noise. Of that group Central Catholic is probably the most dangerous as Klotz, Oliver & Luke Wilshire all have the ability to pop big races & be in the mix of front runners. It is a bit much to ask to have all three having big days at the same time while Lincoln , led by Wasteney, has a great cast supporting him, which was witnessed at the District meet with only a 29 second gap between their top 5 runners. It is with that in mind that a slight edge is given to Lincoln with Central just a bit behind. Should anyone falter South Eugene , Hermiston, Canby & Forest Grove could make noise. XC is a team sport & each person is important to the overall score and the key in the race will probably boil down to an overall consistent team effort.

Girls

If the guys will feature a cast of the proverbial thousands, the girls would appear to have a somewhat simpler plot. Again with the boys, however, the way that the race unfolds could make for severe differences. From the first time Bend 's Kimber Mattox ran last year at the New Balance meet the thought was that there was the future state champion. Things did not work out last year but she is back with much more experience and in my mind is the person to beat. The most capable challenger in terms of time would appear to be Coquille's Holly Dieu, who will be in the 3A race. The question appears to be whether she will forge into the lead & push the pace. If she does it will make things most interesting. Annaliese Chapa of Central Catholic has much in her credit. She has excellent 800 meter speed and was very impressive in the Jim Danner race, as she challenged Bellarmine's Brie Felnagle. She showed great heart in that race. Of course there is the gene factor of her great father & she has a noted coach. She was strong at District & appeared to have recovered from the Danner effort but there is still a question in my mind of her ability to handle hills. (Memory recalls the PIL - Mt. Hood Cross-over meet of prior years). Erin Gray of South Eugene is a former State Champion, who has worked hard & logged many miles. If she has tapered back & recovered she could be a formidable factor, and one has to root for her as a person. Claire Michel popped a big race last year as a freshman & has looked strong this year & could surprise. Casey Masterson of Sheldon & Kendell Nelson of Crater have also looked quite well and could be significant factors. Jesuit leader Pat Laughlin has been up front consistently & has the added incentive of trying to lead her team to the State Title. Not to be forgotten is Jennifer Macias of Hermiston, who is always in the hunt & won impressively at Salem 's Bush Pasture Park .

It would appear that the key to the race is what happens up front from the start. Bend 's Mattox would appear to be Oregon 's best hope at Footlocker & has a distinct edge. The guess is that some will push to stay with her & thus leave more of an opening that Claire Michel & Kendell Nelson will rush through towards the end. Casey Masterson & Chapa are capable of winning and a surprise from Laughlin is anticipated, so the finish could be a wild one. Runners, who are very likely to be factors, include Sunset's Samone Brockett & Julie Quiring, Marsha Lampi of Lincoln , Natalie Todd-Zebell of Grant, Zoe Roy of Summit & Traci Newton of Canby.

As with the boys, the Jesuit girls have great depth, which would appear to be too much for any team to overcome. Patricia Laughlin has a very solid cast of supporters & the team has the benefit of a margin for error. Sheldon & Summit would appear to have an edge over their competition especially due to their up front firepower but South Eugene, Lincoln, Sunset, Hermiston as well as Canby should have much to say at the end of the meet. If things went well for St. Mary's they could also be a factor. It is likely that the course will be a bigger factor in the girl's race & what follows is a hunch as to how things may play out. As my wife ran XC & also helped with the team for years, she also follows the sport & there is a tradition of each of us making predictions. Of note is the fact that she did better than I did last year (and she reminded me of someone who had been overlooked), so her individual picks are included. Good luck to all participants!
