SW#4 Davis (UT) Boys, Davis Girls Sweep Unique Relay Event
The American Fork Grass Relays featured top teams from Utah, including SW #4 Davis pitted against a tough up and coming Timpview. Davis completed the 5-man two-mile relay event in one of the fastest times in event history, 54:38, a full half a minute faster than last year's mark by nationally ranked Rock Springs when they ran 55:01. To put this effort into perspective, Davis's time has only been bettered by a few nationally ranked Mountain View teams, but was still not close to the 1999 squad who ran 52:55 and ranked #2 in the nation. Davis performance was very worthy of a NTN #4 ranked team.
On the Girls side, Timpanogos was leading into the last leg with Davis trailing by 30 yards. The final handoff for Timpanogos was to #1 runner and 2005 10th place state placer sophomore Brooke Hodson. She was chased ferociously by her fellow sophomore, Davis's own multiple state champion, Candace Eddy. This turned out to be an epic battle which led to a near photo finish with Eddy out leaning Hodson and Davis taking home the title with a time of 1:05:52.0 to Timpanogos 1:05:52.6. Eddy needed an overall #1 two-mile performance of 12:06 over the difficult hay bale-filled course to topple the valiant #5 overall effort of Hodson.
It should be noted that the SW #5 Park City girls were without a top runner who returned home from an out-of-country trip this week. It can be speculated that their #5 place finish overall could have been improved by at least two minutes. What we do know is a Davis-Park City-Timpanogos meeting at the BYU Autumn Classic will prove to be worth an NTN watch.
The Overall fastest boy of the day went to Judge Memorial junior Luke Puskedra, who clocked 10:19 leading off and narrowly beating out Davis #1 runner Jared Ward by a second. Puskedra and teammate Peter Harris were the two lone representatives for Judge Boys but still ran the first two legs of the varsity race allowing a fairer race for the junior varsity. We commend the Judge Coaches and athletes for their fairness and Integrity.
