Five State Records at 49th Davis (Utah) Invitational

Boys Invite and Open Full Results - Girls Invite and Open Full Results

One wonders what kind of magic the Davis Invitational will conjure up in 2007, the 50th anniversary of the Utah extravaganza. But whatever does happen it is difficult to imagine it being better than this year's 49th edition.

State records (five), not to mention a bevy of meet and stadium records and Dyestat Elite qualifying marks, were the order of the day. Where do I begin?

How about with Nachelle Stewart of Spanish Fork? She set a State 5A record of 54.18 in the 400, beating the old mark of 54.58 set by Heidi Magill of Mountain View in 2001, which also had been the meet and stadium record.

Stewart set another meet and stadium record in the 200, clocking 24.94, to break the previous standard of 25.04 set by American Fork's Windy Jorgensen in 1992.

And then there were relays. Fast relays. What else did you expect?

Stewart joined forces with Diane Stuart, Amanda Morse, and Natalie Stewart -- the 100 winner in 12.23 and 400 runner-up to Nachelle with a zippy 55.54 -- to set a meet and stadium record of 47.59 in the 4 x 100-meter relay. The old mark had been 48.86 set last year by Davis.

And then she rested.

Well, not exactly!

Marianne Weight took the non-Stewart/Stuart place of Amanda Morse, and this Spanish Fork quartet legged a 3:57.80 win in the 4 x 400.

And then she rested -- honest.

Davis's Candace Eddy didn't rest in setting a State 5A record of 4:58.51 in the 1,600, topping the previous mark of 4:58.53 recorded by Laura Zeigle of Bingham in 2002.

The Judge Memorial team of Aubrey Meyer, Rachel Wallis, Jenna Sliwinski, and Samantha McMillen took the 3A state record in the sprint medley, racing to a 4:10.59 clocking. Judge had set the previous mark of 4:12.35 in 2002.

Ally Dean of Bonnvills set a meet record of 44.20 in the 300 hurdles, paring .24 off the previous mark set by Davis's Ashlee Cannon last year. Cannon was runner-up this time in 44.43.

Amber Henry of Wyoming's Mountain View registered a nice double, taking third behind the Stewarts in the 400 at 56.35 and winning the 800 in 2:16.30.

And Rock Springs (WY) shot putter Amanda Rollin heaved the rock 43-7 3/4.

Yes, there were boys in the meet.. They just didn't have a Stewart.

Judge Memorial's Colin Boevers scored another impressive weights double. He won the shot with a State 3A record toss of 61-9, eight inches further than the old mark set by Eli Herring of Springville in 1987. Boevers then completed a bad day for Herring by breaking his 3A discus mark, twirling it 180-7. Herring had held the mark at 177-9.

Bingham's sprint medley sprinted -- what else could I call it? -- to a 3:39.88 victory, and Justin Heden of Mountain Crest scored a nice 1:53.45/4:19.75 double.

Just another ordinary day at Davis where Coach Roger Burhley annually puts on one of the best meets of the spring. This was no exception. I can't wait 'til next year.

Just a curious question from your editor: how come there are so many city championship meets but none in Tucson? Surely there must be somebody who would be willing to do the work?

If you look at the list that you will get by accessing the following link, you'll see that many of Arizona's State-leading performances come from the Tempe City meet. And there are others from the various city meets elsewhere, such as Scottsdale, Gilbert, and Chandler. Coaches in Tucson have expressed the feeling that others in the state look down on them, don't see the Tucson programs as their equals. And they react negatively to that -- which is understandable. But instead of just talking about it, why don't they do something about it, like sponsoring a Tucson City championship so that their kids would get an opportunity to shine? There are good facilities at University of Arizona, Catalina Foothills and a very fast Mondo track at Sabino. I've been in Tucson less than three years. Yet during that time I often have heard the view that the rest of the State fails to respect us. Isn't it time we do something about it, such as holding a city championship? Or do you want to just keep talking?

It all came up Chaparral at the Scottsdale City Championships. Ashley Osbourne tripled in the sprints, winning the 100, 200, and 400, and Katy Tharp doubled in the hurdles to propel the Chaparral girls to a 136-108 win over host Desert Mountain. Molly Stewart scored a weight double for Coronado.

Scott Morton won the 800 and 1600 and Patrick Steinfeld took the long and triple jumps to pace the Chaparral boys to a 111-87.5 win over Desert Mountain. Alex Lowen took the 200 and 400 for the hosts and Vince Rio won the weights before the home crowd.

Faith Goimarac led Sedona to the championship of the Chino Valley Invitational by winning the 400 and running a leg on the victorious 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays. Sedona beat host Chino Valley, 166-107. Kayla Peck won four events for CV, both hurdles and both horizontal jumps. Jannell Sharber won the sprints for the hosts, but Sedona's depth prevailed.

Cody Bigelow of Estrella Foothills won the high, long, and triple jumps, and Grand Canyon's Justin Kremer won the sprints. Sedona won the boys title as well by a 166 to 107 count over Chino Valley.

The biggest story of the day, though, might be the comeback of Northland Prep's Tolan Thornton. He won the 3200 in a modest 10:12.64. Tolan won the unseeded 2-mile at Nike Outdoors last June in Greensboro, opening all kinds of eyes with his clocking on 9:09.08. He had not previously broken 9:30. Immediately, he was considered to be a Footlocker finalist candidate. And almost as immediately, he suffered a leg injury that would not go away.

Northland Prep Coach Mike Elder reports Tolan has gradually come back into training. And just as he surprised everybody last year with his 9:09.08 at Nike, he just might have another surprise ready to spring on everybody. But this time it likely would be in the mile, due to training limitations. Tolan is eventually going to attend University of Texas.
