BOYS:

1, Fort Collins, CO

Fort Collins placed five scorers in the top 25 to score a decisive victory in the Centerra Cross Country Classic in East Loveland. In 5-man scoring, Fort Collins led the way with a tally of 54, outdistancing Liberty (121), SW#10 host Mountain View (132), SW#8 Denver South (149), SW#9 Denver North (177), and Smoky Hill (183). Using Centerra's unique 4-man scoring, the results were Fort Collins 29, Mountain View 55, Liberty 80, Denver South 83, Denver North 106, and Smoky Hill 116.

Noah Shannon and Tyler Abbey led the way for Fort Collins, taking third and fourth places, respectively, in 16:20.9 and 16:21.7. Paul Brown was 10th in 16:42.5.

6, Davis, UT

Davis HS, from Kaysville, UT, has literally 'darted' onto the scene with its second win in as many Saturdays. The Darts, winners at the Orem Kiwanis meet October 1, followed that up with an impressive Utah Region One championship, the 10th consecutive year they've won the region meet.

Davis took six of the top 10 places and sported a 28-second gap between runners one through five. The top seven gap was just 48 seconds. This resulted in a score of 26, easily outrunning the other three Utah State-qualfying teams, Fremont (65), Viewmont (69), and Weber (94).

Jared Ward (2nd/16:00), Patrick Hall (3rd/16:02), Seth Gutzwiller (6th/16:23), Nathan Inkley (7th/16:24), Seth Frischknecht (8th/16:28), Richie Whicker (10th/16:33) and Milo Williams (12th/16:48) paced the Darts.

Viewmont's Kyle McKenna ran 15:51 to capture the individual title. Weber's Stuart Roskelley (4th, 16:03) and the Fremont duo of Ryan Jones (5th, 16:16) and Austin Christensen (9th, 16:32) rounded out the top-10.

The Darts next outing is the Utah State meet October 19.

8, Denver South, CO

Mohamud Ige set a course record at the Centerra Cross Country Classic in East Loveland, running 16:03.7 in winning by about 85 meters from a quality field.

Ige, who held a big early lead in the 2004 Footlocker National Championships only to fade to 13th, is having a solid season, establishing himself as a threat for the 2005 FL championships.

His win helped make Denver South the fourth place team. In traditional 5-man scoring, the results were Fort Collins 54, Liberty 121, Mountain View 132, Denver South 149, and Denver North 177. Using Centerra's 4-man scoring, the outcome was Fort Collins 29, Mountain View 55, Liberty 80, Denver South 73, and Denver North 106.

Ige, runner-up in the Race of Champions at Great American, pulled away from Tommy Walton of Mountain View and the Fort Collins tandem of Noah Shannon and Tyler Abbey in the last mile and was not going to be caught.

The former course record of 16:17.5 was set last year by Matt Beamer of Kelly Walsh HS of Casper, WY. But the course has been toughened since then, particularly in the opening mile, making it 4 or 5 seconds slower now, adding to the impressiveness of Ige's run.

9, Denver North, CO

Joseph Manilafafha took eighth place in the Centerra Cross Country Classic in East Loveland to lead Denver North to fifth in the team standings. Traditional 5-man scoring shows Fort Collins winning with a score of 54, followed by Liberty 121, Mountain View 132, Denver South 149, and Denver North 177.

Centerra's unique 4-man scoring gives Fort Collins 29, Mountain View 55, Liverty 80, Denver South 83, and Denver North 106.

Manilafafha was part of a tight four-runner group at the finish which saw Shea Wilfong of Liberty get 6th in 16:37.2, Colin Eckelman of Thompson Valley 7th in 16:38.2, Manilafafha 8th in 16:39.7, and Eiger Erickson of Smoky Hill 9th in 16:40.1.

10, Mountain View, CO

Perhaps Centerra meet director Kyle Chandler had Mountain View in mind when he decided the classic would be scored only four runners deep. In the SW top-10 rankings for the first time this season, MV took full advantage of the four-man scoring by collecting a solid second place finish at Centerra, being beaten only by SW#1-ranked Fort Collins, coming out on the short end of the 29-55 score.

Even with traditional scoring, Mountain View had a great meet, taking third place with a score of 132, losing to Fort Collins (54) and Liberty (121), but beating SW#8 Denver South (149) and SW#9 Denver North (177). If MV can close the gap between its fourth and fifth runners, better things are coming.

Tommy Walton led the way for Mountain View, taking second place behind the all but unbeatable Mohamud Ige of Denver South. Ige posted a course record 16:03.7, with Walton edging Fort Collins" Noah Shannon and Tyler Abbey in 16:20.0 for the 5,000-meter course in East Loveland.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

Tebo Rocks

Undefeated Matt Tebo took another step toward being the favorite for the New Mexico 5A State championship. The Eldorado junior was an easy winner of the Eldorado Invitational, covering the 3.0-mile, moderately hilly, dirt and sand layout in 16:01, excellent time considering the race was run at 5,000-feet altitude. Tebo is a likely contender for a Footlocker Nationals qualifying spot.

Teammate Kevin McNally, who has not lost to any 5A runner except Tebo, seems a good choice for the runner-up spot in 5A States. He was second in the Eldorado Invite in 16:41, 36 seconds ahead of third placer Chris Talayumptewa of Gallup.

GIRLS:

1, Fremont, UT

The rich seem to be getting richer.

Fremont powered its way to the Utah Region One championship with an awesome 1-2-5-8-9-(10) finish with a 1-6 pack gap of 63 seconds on a just over 3-mile course. The Lady Silverwolves were led, as usual, by Cassie Ricks who just missed a course record, running 18:15 at Layton Commons State Park in Layton.

Their team score of 24 led State qualifiers Weber (47), Davis (65), and Viewmont (121).

Ricks' teammates Katie Chugg (2nd/18:48), Jessie Chugg (5th/19:04), Lexie Meyer (8th/19:19), and Lindsey Slater (9th/19:24) were the scoring five for Fremont. Heidi Krebs took 10th in 19:27, in a great show of depth. Krebs was only 63 seconds behind the winner and yet was sixth for her team.

Coach Amber Tingey was pleased with her team. "It was a solid performance," she said. "We're all really excited for the State meet (10/19). I'm very proud of the unity this team always shows."

Davis's Candace Eddy (3rd, 18:58) and Natalie Haws (6th, 19:06) and Weber's Haley Reeves (4th, 19:02) and Angela Baker (7th, 19:18) completed the top-1O.

The State Meet is next for Fremont, Wednesday, October 19.

2, Rocky Mountain, CO

It was some weekend for Dani Parry, Ellie Rastall, and McKenzie Maher as Rocky Mountain rolled to a fourth straight major invitational title, adding the Centerra Cross Country Classic to its wins at Harrison, Liberty Bell, and Roy Griak.

Parry and Rastall were part of a four-pack of leaders in the East Loveland, CO., race along with the highly regarded Keara Sammons of Smoky Hill of Aurora, CO, and Liberty Bell winner Katie Follett of Fort Collins. Sammons, third in the Race of Champions at the Great American meet, made a move to get away from the group at about the 2 1/4-mile mark. With about 600 meters remaining, Parry made her move and ended up leaving Sammons and the others in her wake, winning in 18:33.7 She beat Sammons by five seconds.

Rastall ended third, just 7.3 seconds behind Sammons and 19.6 seconds ahead of fourth place Follett.

Maher ended up in seventh, quite a feat for a young lady who had been Rocky Mountain's Homecoming Queen the night before the race!

RM's Kristi Thomas took 10th, finishing out the meet's four-runner scoring. Rocky Mountain finished with 21 points, beating SW#8 Fort Collins by 41. Smoky Hill followed with 75. Adding in the customary fifth runner, the scores become 43-94, over Fort Collins with Smoky Hill next with 118.

Kelli Breidenbach was 21st for Rocky Mountain, followed by teammates Sammie Overholser (29th) and Ali Poppe (30th).

In a great show of strength, all seven Rocky Mountain runners finished before the fifth Fort Collins runner and the fourth from Smoky Hill. RM's entire top five came in before the first runner from Cheyenne Central, the #1 ranked team in Wyoming. It should be noted, however, that Cheyenne Central also raced Friday afternoon in a preview of the Wyoming State meet.

If assistant coach Mike Maher had been wearing a vest, the buttons on it would have popped. "I have to repeat," Maher said on a familiar theme, "don't let that gap between our top two and the next two deceive you. The top two are running with the best in the nation. Our three and four are running very, very well and would contend in almost any region. This was our best performance of the season."

Maher pointed out the rough terrain at the start and felt the loose gravel trail also might have impacted on the times. "And you have to remember," he said, "they raced at 5,000 feet."

From the look of things, they won't be coming down from those heights any time soon.

3, Eldorado, NM

Eldorado continued to show depth and versatility by overcoming the allergy problems its usual number two runner Rachel Velarde suffered and still won the Eldorado Invitational by a 23-37 margin over Gallup.

Velarde struggled in 11th, fifth finisher for powerful Eldorado. Julie Brasher of the home forces was easily in control, winning in 19:29, a 54-second margin over teammate Allison Bedonie who was next across the line. Erin Madden ( 20:37), Laynee Velverde (20:46), and Velarde (21:18) insured that Eldorado will retain its #1 ranking among 5A schools. Gallup is likely to remain second. The third and fourth place schools, St. Pius and De Norte and ranked third and fourth among 4A schoools.

Eldorado coach Jum Butler was pleased with Brasher's performance on the moderately hilly, 3.0-mile, dirt and sand course. "Her time on this course," said Butler, "makes her the favorite to win 5A States."

Next up for Eldorado is the Albuquerque City Championships this coming Saturday.

Team Scores:
1) Eldorado 23
2) Gallup 37
3) St Pius 97
4) Del Norte 103
5) Rio Rancho 145 (ran JV team)
6) Grants 164

4, South Tahoe, CA (competes in Nevada State meet)

South Tahoe witnessed history Saturday at the Clovis, CA, Invitational. Held on the California State Meet course, ST saw Corona Del Mar run the fastest team times ever recorded on the fabled 5,000-meter layout

South Tahoe, missing regular third or fourth runner Megan Hillyard who was taking SATs, still managed a creditable third in the meet, running with all underclass athletes, led by a freshman.

CDM was an easy winner with a score of 36, followed by Buchanon with 66. South Tahoe was next with 157, just edging Royal's 158.

The frosh, Kylie Noll, finished a strong seventh in 18:18. She was followed by junior Kimmy Arroues (20th/19:05), sophomore Kate Lambdin (23rd/19:12), junior Kelsey McClurg (32nd/19:34), and sophomore Courtney Cichowicz (79th/20:49) and Jordan Dalton (98th/21:14).

Coach Dan Wilvers was pleased under the circumstances. "Kimmy and Kelsey weren't feeling well and dropped off the pace after a mile," Wilvers said. "They regularly hammer Kylie in practice. When they are together and healthy (and Hillyard isn't taking SATs), we will close the gap considerably on the national powers." He was referring to Corona Del Mar and Buchanon.

Wilvers is eager to see them at Mt Sac October 22. He has a meet the Wednesday before that )10/19).

And with all but Hillyard returning and the addition of a current 8th grader who is running times close to what Noll ran last year, Wilvers is also eagerly awaiting next fall as well.

8, Fort Collins, CO

Fort Collins ran into juggernaut Rocky Mountain Saturday but didn't let the SW#2-ranked team ruin its weekend. With Katie Follett leading the way as she always does, Fort Collins took a good second place in the Centerra Cross Country Classic in East Loveland.

In traditional scoring, Rocky Mountain scored a 42-94 win, with Smoky Hill in third with 118. In Centerra's unique four-runner scoring, the places were the same but the numbers are 21-62-75.

Follett took fourth place in 19:05.6 behind Rocky Mountain's Dani Parry (1st/18:33.7) and Ellie Rastall (3rd/18:46.0) and Keara Sammons of Smoky Hill (2nd/18:38.7).

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

Lawrence rolls

Marie Lawrence of Reno (NV) HS scored another major victory Saturday, winning the Clovis Invitational on Calfornia's fabled 5,000-meter State Meet course. Lawrence, a junior who has finished second in the Footlocker Nationals there past two years, held off a hard-charging Annie St. Geme, daughter of the legendary Ceci Hopp, in 17:18. Lawrence will be defending her Mt Sac championship on October 22. Reno finished sixth at Clovis with a score of 180. Corona Del Mar ran the fastest team time ever recorded on the course in winning. CDM's total time for the top five was 91:22, 31 seconds faster than Sultana ran in 2002 when it was ranked #3 in the U.S.
