ColoradoFort Collins Boys and Fairview Girls win Colorado State Championships!Important Note: There were many discrepancies between the official results and times coaches had on their watches in the 5A race at State Meet. How this could happen in a meet so important as a state championship is beyond this reporter. They were significant enough that coaches thought they should mention it, especially if NTN bids are on the line. For example, Smoky Hill kids were 13 seconds slower in the results than Coach Welch had on his watch. Many other people had the same times he did for our athletes. It may be significant for people to know when comparing times between classifications. Course and conditions: Course is grass and gravel trails at the El Pomar Recreation Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Overcast, upper 50s and lower 60s. SW#1/US#6 Fort Collins High School boys repeated as the Colorado State Champions in class 5A on Saturday, October 29, 2005. They placed two in the top ten and scored at total of 110 points. Cherry Creek High School also had a strong finish, placing second overall with 161 points. Fort Collins was led once again by senior Noah Shannon (3rd overall) and senior Tyler Abbey (5th overall), both good enough for All-State. Steven Weeks of Arvada High School won individual honors, running the course in 15:40. Paul Brown finished 14th, Bryant Mason 22nd, and Jon Kittell 66th for the Lambkins. CLASS 5A BOYS Results - from runnercard.com CLASS 5A GIRLS Results - from runnercard.com Assistant Coach Ken Follett writes: Fairview High School girls placed three in the top ten to win the Colorado State Championships in class 5A with 96 points. They were led by Meredith MacGregor (3rd overall), Morgan Stumb (6th overall), and Alexis Skarda (7th overall), all good enough for All-State. Rocky Mountain High School finished second in the team standings with 123 points. Keara Sammons of Smokey Hill High School won the individual title in 18:12.2 Sarah Cocco for Fairview finished 27th. In comparison to Follett’s report, we offer Mike Maher’s interpretation below: SW#2 Rocky Mountain went 2, 4, 14, 38, then 66, but according to coach, Mike Maher the team “should have been” 2, 4, 14, 20(e), 38. Even on a very average day for Rocky Mountain, Maher felt, “We win and go home champions.” Maher goes on to say, “Fairview went 3, 5, 10, for there first 3 (very strong), then 25 and 53. It was definitely close after 3, but a normal #4 (Kristie) easily covers their #4 and our #5 ran away from their #5 38 to 53. Again, I can't take away from Fairview’s excellent performance. They won the meet.” Maher points out that all should consider that Kristi has been rock solid all year for us cumulating with a 18:49 5th at Regionals last week, and even if she walks in we win. Some may say "well that's why you have a #6". Very true, but the level our first 4 run at there is really no way to cover a 18:49 girl with a high school #6 runner. The first 4 are just so good, and when one doesn't finish at a competitive meet like State Meet in Colorado there is a price you must pay. I guess any other team would still consider our season a total success. Every meet we ran in had big time competition and had other ranked teams. None of the meets we won were even close. We won them all by large margins and some against other nationally ranked teams. Five big Invite wins and a 2nd at State is still a very solid year. We still feel like we are one of the top 5 teams in the nation as our current ranking suggests. We aren't looking to just slide under the line and go out to Portland for a 20th place finish. We have demonstrated that we have 2 top elite runners in Dani Parry and Ellie Rastall. We can back that up with 2 very solid runners at #3 (18:40), and #4 (18:49), and a 5th that actually ran very well today. We have consistently averaged in the low 19's and twice under 19:00 including last weeks 18:48 average. We actually feel like we can go out to NTN and really get in the mix. FULL RESULTS - from

SW#8 St. Michaels, 15; Irena Ossola, 1st; 18:36 Comments from Lenny Gurule, Girls Head Coach for St. Michaels. "The girls team ran well today and although I wasn’t looking or expecting for them to get a perfect score but they did! Irena Ossola and Tess Amer ran a great race together finishing 1-2. Patty Murray finished 3rd and is the one girl on our team that is on her own in terms of running with a teammate, so that’s how the race played out for her today, no man’s land. Katie Behm as I wrote last week was gonna take it easy but, there’s no easy in her. Katie and Carolyn Ives were 4th and 5th with Katharine Egli trialing not too far behind in 7th place and just missing out top 6 by 1 second. It was a good performance, next week is our State Meet and nothing will be taken for granted!!! We are looking forward to the challenges from other teams and individuals." District 5, 5A Meet Top 10 Individuals: 1) Kelly McCabe Highland 20:35 Team scores: 1) SW#4 Eldorado 25 Eldorado Coach’s James Bulter’s comments: "This was a race that we used as a tune up for state to make sure everyone is feeling strong and confident. We ran controlled and in a pack for the entire race. Everyone is healthy and running strong and we are ready to show what we can do at state." Boys Top 10 Individuals: 1) Matt Tebo Eldorado 16:20 Team Scores: 1) Highland 38 Eldorado Coach’s James Bulter’s comments: "In the end, Highland's depth overcame our front strength. Both teams are possible title winners in a wide open state meet. Individual favorite Matt Tebo won convincingly after a controlled first mile. Kevin McNally and Nick Arguelles are also top runners for 5A state."
