Top 10 Scoreboard

A slow week here in the Southwest. Arizona held their biggest invitational of the season last weekend, as did New Mexico. The meet in New Mexico was on their State Championship course and who wouldn't want to run there at this point in the season. Utah has already started their regional competition so it appears their season is winding down quickly. Next week SAT testing will wreak havoc on many of the Saturday meets. With all this in mind, lets see who did what...

Boys
1. Los Alamos, NM
Off week, but lookout next week as they are flying off to the Jim Danner Invitational in Gresham, Oregon, with many, many other great teams

2. Mountain View, UT
Last week at Great American. Regions this week.

3. Albuquerque Academy, NM
Did not race this weekend.
Next weekend: Albuquerque City Championships at Albuquerque Academy Sat. October  Albuquerque Academy boys will go for their 7th straight City title despite being less than half the size of all 11 Albuquerque Public Schools.   Included in this meet is unranked but strong La Cueva.

4. Page, AZ
Winners at the Doug Conley meet last weekend. Resting this weekend.
Tuba City Invitational this Friday.

5. Fort Collins, CO
Northglenn Invitational SW #5 Fort Collins, CO (boys) on Friday finished second behind SW #6 Denver South (72-75). Fort Collins was without their #3 and #4 runner due to a minor knee injuries. The head coach decided to give him the week off from racing to train so that he would be able to be ready for the championship season. Fort Collins depth really showed as their typical #6 and #7 runners (Friday running #5) brought them just a few points short of an extremely tough Denver South team who again went 1st and 2nd, followed by a 19th, 23rd and 27th finish to round out their scoring. The difference was Denver South's #3 and #5 finished one place ahead of Fort Collins runners. Fort Collins runners placed 7th, 8th, 12th, 20th, 28th. The course was a little slower as compared to years past.

Utah
Region One meet in Northern Utah will be contested this Friday, Oct. 8. Fremont High School SW#3 is the favored team with Davis High school girls providing the closest competition in the girls' race. In the the boys' race, Davis High School is favored over Fremont, Weber, and Viewmont. The top four teams from the region will qualify for the 5A Utah State Championships to be held at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City on October 20.

SW #8 American Fork , will be participating this Saturday at their Region VI Championships at Springville, Utah. Region VI also includes 4A teams Provo (2003 4A State Runner-up), Timpview (2003 4A State 5th Place), and Spanish Fork (2003 4A State 8th place).

Most other Region Championship meets will be held sometime between Saturday and next Wednesday.

Colorado
Northglenn Invite (suburb of Denver).  Most of the top teams in the state will compete there; however, a few other very good teams will be competing at other meets.  The Northglenn course is flat and fast - at least 50% on hard surface (bike path) and the softer surfaces are just a little grass and a dirt trail.  Times for this 5k course should be fast as the weather is calling for low 70s and sunny on Friday.  Given that every weekend except last weekend in CO has been very warm to race in, this weekend's conditions are setting up to post stellar times.  SW#6 Denver South boys were originally scheduled to be at another meet on this weekend, but have reworked their schedule to go head to head with (#5) Ft. Collins. Although Smoky Hill will be in attendance, they will not be racing their "A" Team, who will be taking a much needed rest after their meet last weekend at Great American.  SW#8 Cherry Creek should be in attendance as well as several of the other top teams in Colorado.  Its possible that Campbell County (Gilette, WY) may be down this weekend as well.

The second best meet in terms of competition will the Centerra (corporate sponsor) Cross Country Classic .   This meet will feature 25-30 teams with four of them coming down from Wyoming.  One-half of the boys teams and 1/2 of the girls teams participating in this years meet qualified to their respective state championships last season .

Boys: Colorado 4A defending champ, Liberty HS from Colorado Springs and currently ranked 2nd in the state behind Denver South as well Mountain View HS (2nd place in 4A last year-#4 rank) are among the better 4A teams participating with Denver North (currently ranked top 10 in CO 5A) returning as last years Centerra CC Classic team champion as well as Kelly Walsh (Casper, WY) - lasts years runner-up (3rd in 2003 State).  Rocky Mtn & Ft. Collins are participating, but will probably have most if not all of their Varsity runners at Northglenn, unless they change their mind. "Dark horse" Thompson Valley could suprise a few teams.

Girls: Sarah Balfour (Natrona County - Casper,WY - Foot Locker participant) won last years true (some of the CO courses are "short" 5Ks - this one is legit) 5k race in 18:41 - 1 minute ahead of her nearest competition and returns this year to defend her title and course record.  The teams aspect should be very interesting in that Mullen (2003 CO 4A runner-up and previously ranked #2 and now #1) defeated Mountain View (2003 CO 4A State Champs previously ranked #1 and now #2) two weeks ago in Pueblo.   Cheyenne Central girls were 2nd place to Campbell County by just a few points last year and is strong again this year.   Sheridan, Wyoming won the pre-state meet last week; although, a few of the noteables were not there.   Loveland girls are ranked top 10 in CO 5A and should contend as well.

Nevada
The big meet here is the Veterans Memorial Invitation. To view entries, go to:
http://www.nvtrackstats.com/2004_XC_Veterans_Memorial_Invite.htm#Entries

Arizona
Only two meets here this weekend. Over in Whiteriver Alchesay High School is hosting their Alchesay Invitation today, where there is a good possibility that SW #9 Ganado girls may compete. If not there then up in Flagstaff at the Coconino Invitational. SW #4 Page boys will not run, but instead will run their JV team.

New Mexico
There is no major meets in New Mexico this weekend. Although, SW #3 Albuquerque Academy boys will run a JV as a varsity at the Eldorado
Invitational
in Albuquerque at the Bear Canyon Arroyo on Saturday, where 10 teams will see competiton.

Albuquerque Academy girls (unranked) will run at the Onate Invitational in Las Cruces on Saturday. 12 teams

SW #1 Los Alamos boys and girls will have a bye week then run at the Jim Danner Invitational in Oregon in one week.
