#5 Denver South CO

Won the Sweetheart Invitational.
Quotes from one of Denver South's coaches: "The course was hell.  It rained Thursday and Friday (when the meet was supposed to go).  However, due to the water and mud it had to be delayed.  When we arrived on Saturday, it was still a pigs dream.  The meet director did his best to clean up the course with hay laid on it to follow, though the footing was terrible, not just for 200 meters here and there, the whole way.  This coming Friday is when we finally get to go head to head with Fort Collins the boys are biting at the bit on this one.  We still have not stepped on the track once yet and last Monday was our first interval workout in the park."

The Southwest Friday Report for the Weekend of October 2nd 2004

Lots of big regional meets including the Dyestat feature -- The Doug Conley -- being run in Tempe, AZ. Over in Gallup, New Mexico the Curtis Williams Invitational , which just might be the biggest meet in the state, will see many ranked schools compete at Red Rock State Park. The Orem Invitational , in Utah, will also see head to head competition against some regionally ranked teams, as well as other top-notched programs in that state. In Nevada, the big meet there is the Angel Park Invitational . Even though its officially fall, the competition in the Southwest Region is really heating up!

The Doug Conley Invitational , Kiwanis Park, Tempe, Arizona
Teams competing:
Boys
SW#4 Page (AZ), SW#7 Desert Vista (AZ)
Girls
SW#7 Ganado (AZ), SW#8 Desert Vista (AZ), SW#10 Mountain Pointe (AZ)

Orem Invitational , Orem, Utah
SW#3 Fremont Plain City (UT) girls will see competition, as well as SW#10 Jordan (UT) boys.

Curtis Williams Invitational , Red Rock State Park, Gallup, New Mexico
Location of the New Mexico State Championships will see 33-36 school in competition, including many of the Regionally ranked teams as well as many excellent teams at the state level. The course is almost entirely on sand, but it can be packed at times depending upon recent moisture. On the boys side, it will be the 3rd of 5 evenly-matched showdowns between SW#3 Albuquerque Academy (NM) and SW#1 Los Alamos (NM). The SW#2 Los Alamos girls will be there as well as the unranked (previously SW#9) Albuquerque Academy (NM) girls. Gallup should be well represented and strong on their home course. Another top contender includes St. Michael's (NM). La Cueva, who has been next in line in NM will not be there as they host their own meet this weekend.

Another aspect of this meet is the travelling trophy, which goes to the school with the best combined scores in boys and girls varsity, as well as its best JV.  Amazingly, the past two years have ended in ties, with the tiebreaker going to Albuquerque Academy in '02 and to Los Alamos in '03. Tomorrow should see an amazingly tight race between these two schools!

Fort Collins Varsity Boys and Girls are running at the Battle Mountain Invitational in Vail CO.

Katie Follett is running at the Great American Festival.
