Desert Vista ((#4 SW) Boys Dominate Chandler Invite
Last week what was erroneously reported of the defeat of the Desert Vista (DV) boys by Flagstaff High School at the Peaks Invite, when in fact, they sat out, their coming out party was just that -- a romp and a party. The Chandler Invite, a unique meet that pits class against class, and scores by adding top finisher in each of those races had DV finishing with an astounding low of 9 points! On a very hot and humid (yes, its humid here in the central valley of Arizona), good times were turned in by all DV boys on a somewhat short (~3.0 mile), flat course. Frosh Matt Boughton ran 17:09, soph Matt Swift, 16:20, juniors Garrett Kelley and Blake Giboson with a 15:48 and a 15:55, respectively and senior Matt Waters running 16:36 in what had become an inferno by then. Next week both DV and Mesa Mountain View will face head to head on the same course. Top time of the day was turned in by Senior Craig Brienholt of Highland in 15:44.

Window Rock Invitational

Chinle Boys and Ganado Girls are Running up a Storm

Let me say that I have been involved with cross country and track and field for 36 years, first in the Northeast then in college at Arizona State, then most recently in Raleigh, North Carolina, but I have never seen the excitement and true passion that the Native communities generate for the sport. Here in Window Rock, the capital of the Navajo Nation, there were thousands that turned out for this meet, which mainly featured teams from reservations. I am almost certain, their love and dedication for the sport equals that of those runners who hail from places like Kenya, Ethiopia and Morocco. The courses are most beautiful, set in red rock and sandstone, and the people cheer and applaud all who participate. And as a side note, this is probably the only meet in the US that has to employ a "rattlesnake crew" to make certain the runners stay safe on the outskirts of the course.
