Southwest Region Weekly Review
Sep 4, 2004

US#13 SW#3 Denver South boys beaten twice. Cherry Creek does the job at Harrison; SW#6 Cherry Creek girls complete the sweep despite Rocky Mountain's 1-2-3 finish. Fairview girls win Allen Patten, with US#2 Smoky Hill Aurora apparently saving its big guns for later. US#6 Albuquerque Academy NM boys romp. La Cueva NM graduates Shadrack Kiptoo but still topples SW#9 Gallup NM boys. SW#6 Page boys win at Peaks Invitational. Jared Rohatinsky wins in UT.

Colorado - New Mexico - Arizona - Nevada - Utah

Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona opened their seasons with a bang,
while Utah and Nevada played it cool running relay meets.

Colorado

The Harrison Invitational was held on this
year's state championship course. Last year's small schools state
champion, John McGuire from D'Evelyn H.S. won his race by over a
minute in 15:15. In the large school race, new transfers to Denver
South Mohammed Ige and Aden Amhed finished one-two with times
significantly slower than McGuire's at 15:52 and 16:13,
respectively. It should also be mentioned that Ige opened up last
year here on the same course with a time of 15:23, which just could
be a result of the adjustment he's experiencing. But let's keep an
eye on McGuire since the three (McGuire, Ige and Amhed) will all
meet back here on the same course at the state meet in October. In
addition to the individual excitement, Denver South, who we should
all know by now, inherited Ige and Amhed from Denver West, were
regionally ranked in the number 3 position, was upset barely by
unranked Cherry Creek, by a score of 94 to 97.

In the girl's race, at Harrison, Rocky Mountain High School finished
1-2-3, led by Daneille Parry in 18:45. But Cherry Creek High School
ranked in the # 6 position in the Southwest Region) pulled a double
by winning the girls race, in addition to the boys. An excellent
day by the Cherry Creek crew!

What we think is the very next day -- Friday, September 4th -- Denver South was again busy at the Allen Patten Invitational held at the Boulder Recreation Center (Denver West was truly experiencing a "Labor Day Weekend").

Boys Race Results (Allen Patten Invitational):
Teams:
1. Fort Collins 41, 2. Smoky Hill 64, 3. Denver South 66, 4.

Boys Summary:
Although still early in the season, regionally ranked, Denver South
is defeated by two unranked schools. Denver South's other stud,
Aden Ahmed, finished 6th in 17:23.6. One has to ask, is Denver
South trying to race itself into shape? As I said, its still too
early to tell.

Smoky Hill held out its varsity team. Still the girls from Fairview
look very strong finishing with a low 39 points.

Arizona

(elevation 7000 feet). Several Southwest Region teams butted heads
in the Peaks Invitational with a few shake-ups resulting

message to all in the region that the Flagstaff dynasty is back. #4

Ganado, previously ranked 8th in the state, and Desert Vista,
previously ranked 2nd in the state, are both very young squads with
each having only one senior in their top five. Besides the youth
factor, Ganado looks a little deeper than Desert Vista team with
Ganado's 6th and 7th finishing in the 50th and 52nd positions,
compared to DV's 6th and 7th going 36th and 102nd. #5 Regionally
ranked Mountain Pointe passes on the Peaks Invitational to open their
season a little later.

Utah

The only results that have come in are from the 9th Annual
American Fork Grass Relays. Running a distance of 2.083 miles
(approximately 20 seconds longer than two miles) and jumping over hay
bales along the way, saw Jared Rohatinsky (the Rohatinsky Dynasty
continues) of Provo, turning in the fastest time of the day. The
girls fastest time was turned in by Vanessa Hawkins from Timanogos,
with a time of 12:24. The winner of the boys team race was host
American Fork with a total time of 54:37. Finishing in 4th was #8

another excellent time was run by Wendy Harris (LUND) in the Junior
race in 14:17. Senior Josh Sillitoe from Basic H.S. out of
Henderson, NV. ran the fast time for the boys in 11:37.
