On a very warm day with temperatures in the high 70's nearly 3000 athletes competed in 4 division over the 3.1 mile moderately hilly course. The fastest times of the day were turned in by Kenny Comier of Douglas High School, who ran 14:45 and Kari Hardt of Queen Creek, who finished in 18:12. Regionally ranked teams, (SW #8) Page boys and (SW #7) Flowing Wells won their respective divisions, with Flowing Wells defeating (SW #10) Mountain Pointe.

Boys

SW #8 Page High School wins the 4A state championship with 40 points over 2nd place team finisher Flagstaff High School (94 points) and 3rd place team finisher Cactus Shadows. The Page boys were lead by Levi Lomeland, a junior, who finished second in 15:10, 25 seconds behind winner Kenny Cormier of Douglas High School. There was a group of ten runners who early on tried to hang with Cormier, the best runner in the state, but by the half mile Cormier had opened his lead to 75 meters. At that point, the individual race was for second, won by Lomeland. It was the ninth team victory since 1989 for Page and the second state championship in a row. Cormier's final time, the fastest of the day, was 14:45. Complete results will be posted Monday at:

Girls

SW #7 Flowing Wells wins a squeaker over SW #10 Mountain Pointe by just two points 73 to 75. In the process, Flowing Wells ends Mountain Pointe's three year reign on the state championship. And for Flowing Wells it was the first time for any of the teammates, including its two seniors that they had competed as a team in the state championships. For the past three years its seniors were coming by themselves and competing as individuals. "I couldn't be more proud of these girls," Flowing Wells coach Mandee Fish said. "Especially my two seniors. They came to this meet by themselves for the past three years and now, for them to have a team and win . . . They put in their dues and now they're being rewarded." Individual winner, Mountain Pointe junior Kristin Phillips set the pace at 18:31 on the 3.1-mile course. "There were a lot of good girls this year," Phillips said. "It was nerve-racking because so many girls around me wanted to win"

Last year's Flagstaff High School team was nationally ranked compared to this year's team who wasn't even on the radar screen.
