Page AZ boys -- "Arizona's Best" and Doug Conley Invitational champions

Results

A very warm day with races beginning in mid morning with temperatures in the low to mid 80's, but the sun feeling much warmer that the numbers reveal. Just about all of the best teams were represented.

With 150 starters, if one does not get good positioning then there is a lot of effort that needs to be exerted to get to the front as the course narrows considerable after the start. Runners have 150 meters of open running before the course sharply turns to the left onto a canal path about ten feet in width. Then onto some rolling grass paths, then sidewalks, then grass.

If one gets good positioning after the start, then the course lends itself to some fast times, such as winner Kenny Cormier (Douglas High School) experienced running an excellent time of 15:42 for a true 5K. Cormier proves again that he is the best runner in the state, who regularly logs 90 miles/week.

Page AZ High School (SW #4) looked very strong after getting out slow. According to coach Mark Lomeland, the boys anticipated this as all had run this racecourse at least three times in their careers. Each knew where to move. Page boys are having an excellent year so far and the Conley meet is the first that they have really rested for, tapering back their 60 plus miles per week.

Maybe the big surprise in the boys race was Desert Vista, ranked 7th in the Southwest Region, finishing 9th. But there is still plenty left in the season, and with their excellent coaching, Desert Vista is not to be counted out.

In the girls race, sleeper Flowing Wells upset an excellent field including three Regionally ranked teams - Desert Vista (# 4), Ganado (#7) and Mountain Pointe (#10). Labeling Flowing Wells a "sleeper" might not be fair since they did win last week's Mesquite Invitational in a tie-breaker over (SW #10) Mountain Pointe that embarrassingly slipped under our radar. This week however they had no problem defeating Mountain Pointe by over 29 points. Note that Flowing Wells has only one senior in their top five. We should see them in our rankings in days to come.

Long time Meet Directors Jim Wherman and Dave Shapiro, after 26 years are going to pass on the production of this meet to more, "younger blood". Even with the high temperatures, the Doug Conley is (and we hope continues to be) the top meet in Arizona.
