Missouri

Liberty Invitational @ Stocksdale Park, Liberty 9/3/05

HL#1/US#7 Liberty boys opened their season in style, scoring 21 points to win the home invite. Liberty was led by the 1-2-3 finish of Shawn Etzenhouser (11:34), Kip Hill (11:39) and Jared Cline (11:51) over a hilly course listed at 2 miles, but appearing long. Oak Park, Kansas City was second with 72 points, and Benton, St. Joseph third with 138. The Liberty ladies also appear tough, scoring 28 points to win their division, with last year's Missouri 3A second place team Notre Dame de Sion, Kansas City second with 60 points and Truman, Independence third with 110. Anna Florzak (Sion), the top returnee in class 3A, won with a time of 13:59, with teammate Victoria Mirfashi second at 14;16. Whitney Danze led Liberty in third at 14:22.

Lutheran South Invitational @ Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis 9/3/05

HL#5 Potosi boys rolled to a 17 point total to wallop the field at the Lutheran South Invitational. Lutheran North, St. Louis was second with 69, and Priory, St. Louis third with 101. Josh Mathis led a 1-2-3-5-6 Potosi romp, winning in 16:39, with Josh Theabeau second (16:54) and Rick Armstrong in third (17:12). Whitfield won the girls title with 66 points, with Rosati-Kain, St. Louis second (68) and Visitation, St. Louis third with 103. Megan Bourbon (Potosi) edged Sandy Inman (Notre Dame, St. Louis) for the title, both running 21:09 for 5k.


Cass County Invitational @ Belton 9/3/05

Long time power Warrensburg cruised to a 54 point total to win the boy's title, with North Kansas City (93) and Smith-Cotton, Sedalia (100) in second and third. Pleasant Hill's Matt Haffner ran 10:49 over two miles to win, with David Hosman (William Chrisman, Independence) second at 11:00. Raymore-Peculiar scored 24 to win the girls title, with Warrensburg (49) and Belton (61) second and third. Kelcy Vanarsdale (Ft. Osage, Independence) won the girls race at 13:30, with Warrensburg's Stephanie Rizzolo second at 13:48.

First Capitol Invite @ McNair Park, St. Louis 9/2/05

White Division: Ft. Zumwalt South put four runners into the top ten and won the boy's White title with 40 points. Parkway South, St. Louis was second with 88 and University High, St. Louis was third with 105. Ben Brammeier (Parkway South) won the individual title with a 16:00 5k, with Max Hackler (Hazlewood West) second at 16:14, and Nathan Young (Ft. Zumwalt South) third at 16:21. Tim Cornell (2-time Missouri State XC Champ 2003 and 2004) ran a 16:19 on that course so Brammeier's 16:00 (a new course record) is very impressive…..even more so since it was the 1st week of the season. Blue Division: St. Claire's Brennan Benkert dominated the race, winning in 16:34, with John Boyd (St. Genevieve) second at 17:09 and University City's Andy Chase third (17:28). St. Genevieve won the team title with 51 points, with Priory, St. Louis second (56) and University City (112) third.

White Division Girls: Pattonville, St. Louis scored 52 points to win the girls team title, with Lafayette, St. Louis second with 92 and Rockwood Summit third with 114. Emily Baker of Lafayette won the inidividual title in 20:27, with Monica Noble (Francis Howell North, St. Charles) second at 20:37 and Hickman, Columbia's Kendra Foss third at 20:39. Blue Division Girls: In an exciting finish, Rachel York (St. Clair) just edged Molly Schlamb (Ladue), both running 19:35 for 5k. Alyssa Allison (Festus) was third at 20:03. St. Genevieve made it a sweep, winning the girls title with 56 points, with Ladue (77) second and MICDS, St. Louis third at 135.

Minnesota

Dakota County Championships, 9/1/05, Johnny Cake Ridge Park

Elizabeth Yetzer (HL#6 Lakeville North) opened her season with a strong 11:20 (2 miles) to win the Dakota County Championships Thursday. Yetzer won by a wide margin, with the Apple Valley trio of Jenny Rodgers (12:05), Sierra McCauley (12:06) and Jen Lang (12:08) going 2-3-4 to lead Apple Valley to the team title. Apple Valley scored 30 to win, with Lakeville North second with 47 and Northfield third with 99. Lakeville North romped to the boys title with 29 points. Eastville was second with 69 and Northfield third with 78. Tim Bruhn led Lakeville North, winning in 10:04 with team mate Tyler King second at 10:14 and Lakeville South's Paul Hilsen third at 10:26.

Irish Invitational @ Rosemount HS

Prior Lake (43) edged Stillwater (56) for the girl's team title at the Irish Invitational with White Bear Lake (93) third. Stillwater went 1-2 in the individual race with Carolyn Baird (12:03) and Caitlin Olson (12:06). Megan Hunter led Prior Lake in third (12:18) with Anna Garner (Mayo, Rochester 12:19) and Kaylee Sommer (Mahtomedi 12:21) rounding out the top five.
Rosemount packed four runners in the top ten to win the boy's title with 37 points, with Robbinsdale Armstrong (70) and Chaska (95) in second and third. Brandon Lewis (10:29.3) of Robbinsdale Armstrong edged Pat Lowder (Chaska 10:29.8) for the individual title, with Peter Hoffman (Mayo, Rochester 10:34), and the Rosemount duo of Tim Kojetin (10:37) and Jordan Carlson (10:37.3) rounding out the top five.


Milaca Invitational @ Milaca Country Club 8/30/05

Becker won the girls title at the 20 team Milaca Invitation, scoring only 32 points, with Monticello second with 105 and St. Francis third with 129. Becker was led by individual champ freshman Ella Smith. Brenna Carey (Big Lake 16:17) and Andrea Bordon (Crosby-Ironton 16;27) were second and third. Girls ran 4k. An exciting boys team race saw North Branch and Pine City both score 97 points with North Branch winning on the pusher. Monticello was third with 128 points. Dan Greeno (St. Michael/Albertville) ran 16:47 over 5k for a huge win by over a minute. Nick Ramberg led North Branch in second at 17:54.


Iowa

Spartan Invitational @ Pleasant Valley 9/3/05

HL#8 Iowa City girls scored 42 to win their team title, holding off Xavier, Cedar Rapids (58), with Pleasant Valley third with 118. Kelsey Bulat (Pleasant Valley) won the girls team title, running 15:19 for 4k, holding off Xavier's duo of Meaghan Nelson (15:22) and Alyssa Criscoll (15:24). Rock Island IL stomped to the boys team title, scoring 25 points, with Pleasant Valley second with 68 points. Bettendorf (94) and Iowa City (100) were third and fourth. Jordan Lang (Prairie, Cedar Rapids) won the boys title, running 16:41 over 5k, with Austin Green leading Rock Island at (16:47) in second. Mike Shoemaker (Iowa City) was third at 16:58.


Prairie Classic @ Prairie HS, Cedar Rapids, 8/30/05

HL#10 Kennedy, Cedar Rapids dominated the boys race, putting five in the top ten and scoring 30 points. Linn-Mar was second with 65 and Prairie, Cedar Rapids was third with 71. Kennedy senior Ryan Williamson ran 17:24 to win, with Brady Fitz (Iowa City West 17:37) and Austin Vondracek (Prairie) third at 17:38. The Iowa City West girls started in fine fashion at the Prarie Classic, putting three runners in the top five and scoring 25 points to win. Kennedy, Cedar Rapids was second with 64, and Washington, Cedar Rapids was third with 75. West was led by individual champ Sarah Wickman, who cruised a 15:36 4k and was followed across the line by teammate Claire Hall (15:36). Andrea Wacker (Kennedy) was third at 15:50.


Southeast Polk Invitational @ SE Polk HS 8/30/05

Waukee scored 48 points to win the girls division on a hot, humid day, with Knoxville second (76) and Newton third (104). Casey McDermott (Newton) won in 15:50 over 4k, with Colette Gnade (15:54) and Paris Kono (16:00) running 2-3 to lead Waukee. Sarah Wilcox (Carlisle) ran 16:00 for fourth. Indianola put two in the top ten to score 55 and win the boys race, with Southeast Polk (63) and Knoxville (68) second and third. Indianola was led by individual champ Joe Bradley (17:55), who edged Baron Davis (Knoxville 17:57) for the win. Thomas Hlad (Knoxville 18:06) was third.

Little Cyclone Invitational @ ISU, Ames 9/1/05

Ankeny put four in the top ten to win the boys division with 45 points, with Cedar Falls (56) second and host Ames (74) third. Sam Bailin (Valley, West Des Moines) won the individual title in 16:53 in a tight one over Jason Mitchell (Cedar Falls 16:54) and Tyler Jordison (Ft. Dodge 16:56). Valley dominated the girls race with 28 points and six in the top eleven. Ames (55) was second and Ankeny (65) third. Jessica Wiegert (Valley) zipped over 4k in 15:28 to win, with Katie Thompson (Ft. Dodge) second at 15:41 and Kersten Thorgaard (Ames) third at 16:07


Urbandale Invitational @ Urbandale HS, 9/1/05

Host Urbandale, behind a lightning quick 14:29 4k win from Stephanie Mundt, won the 17 team Urbandale Invite. Urbandale scored 34 points in combined team scoring, with Johnston second with 59, and Noadaway Valley third with 114. Jill Lagchulte (Marshalltown) was second at 15:13 and Cassi Sokol (Urbandale 15:15) and Alyse Herr (Noadaway Valley 15:55) also broke 16:00. Marshalltown, behind the 1-2 finish of Stephen Dak (16:07) and Corbin Miller (16;13) won the boys division with 35 points. Johnston was second with 92 and Roosevelt, Des Moines third with 99. David Lantz (Dowling, West Des Moines) was third at 17:09.

Kansas

Saints Challenge @ JCCC - St Thomas Aquinas Invite, Overland Park 9/3/05

Tucker Weems cruised a victory to lead HL#2 Shawnee Mission Northwest to a win over fellow HL#9 Blue Springs MO. The Cougars & Wildcats went head to head this past weekend in the first meet of the year at the St Thomas Aquinas Invitational. Blue Springs entered the fray without the services of their #2 runner Daniel Harkins, and SMNW was without the services of their #3 runner Josh Weems. When the smoke settled SMNW came out on top with a score of 45 to 53. Both teams top runners, Weems (SMNW) and sr-Josh Rollins (BS) ran under the old course record with Weems coming out on top with a time of 15:42 over Rollins' 15:58.

Manhattan Invitational @ Carey Park, Manhattan 9/3/05


Talk around the state was that Emporia, ranked in the Heartland last year, had suffered heavy graduation losses. Perhaps, but the Spartans boys still looked tough today, scoring 69 points to win the traditional season opening Manhattan invite. Skyler Delmott ran 16:21 over the hilly 5k to lead Emporia. Ben Histand of Newton was second at 16:51, with Mauricio Morales (Emporia 16:56), Tim Testa(Junction City 17;01) and David Hansen (Leavenworth 17:16) following. Lawrence (82) was second to Emporia, with Junction City third with 88. Defending 5A champ Seaman, Topeka impressed with a 45 point total to take the girls crown. Manhattan was second with 98 and Emporia third with 99. Michaela Reynolds of Emporia zipped a 12:00 over two miles to win, with the Junction City duo of Tamera Smith (12:14) and Erica Testa (12:33) in second and third and Kelly Renfro (Lawrence 12:45) and Autumn Kidwell (Seaman 12:47) rounding out the top five.


Bishop Carroll Invitational @ Lake Affton, Wichita 9/3/05

Bryce Volz (17:00 5k) and David Slagle (17:05) went 1-2 to lead Bishop Carroll, Wichita, to the boy's title over the hilly Lake Affton course. Bishop Carroll, the defending Kansas 5A state champ, scored 24, with Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Wichita second with 78. John McGreevy led KMC, placing third at 17:13. Free State, Lawrence was third with 103 and Maize forth with 118.
Kapuan Mt. Carmel won the girls title with 45 points. The Crusaders lost defending 5A state champ Courtney Johnson when she moved to Texas, the crusaders still appear very tough. Maize was second with 75 points, with Bishop Carroll (109) and Free State (111) following. Free State's Alysha Valencia, a sub 11:00 3200 runner, won in 12:21 over two miles, with Ryan Ayres leading KMC in second at 12:45 and Liz Marsh (Wichita East) third at 12:54.


Great Bend Invitational @ GBGC 9/1/05

Sloan Kern led the Great Bend boys to the team title with a 16:59 5k win over the hills of Great Bend. Salina South, led by the 2-3 finish of Joey Thompson (17:22) and Clinton Begnoche (17:24) was second with 72 points, with Buhler third with 79.
They Hays girls are expected to challenge for the 5A crown this year, and showed why with a 38 point total and four runners in the top ten to win the team title. Liberal (85) and Great Bend (88) were second and third. Lauren Bonds (Hutchinson) ran 12:12 to win by a wide margin, with Chelsea Clanton (Great Bend 12:41) and Hayley Charles (Hays 12:46) in second and third.


John Emerson Classic @ Hoisington 9/3/05

In a unique meet bringing together many of the top small schools from western Kansas, the John Emerson meet runs class races, then combines finishes for team scores. Defending 3A state champ Leah Thompson of Lyons had the top overall girls mark, running 12:36 for 2 miles to win almost by a minute. John Navarette of Pratt had the best boys mark of 17:48 for 5k. Pratt and Larned scored 18 to tie for the boys title, no girls team scores reported.


South Gray Invite @ Coldwater 9/2/05

Southwest Kansas small schools ran into Hoover's (OK) annual treck across the state line at the South Gray invite. Hoover scored 48 points to win the boys team title with South Gray (63) second and Hugoton (79) third. Chad Herrera (Deerfield) won the boys tile in 16:53 over 5k, pushed all the way by Hoover's Riley Voth (16;57). Sean Jantz (South Gray) was third at 17:56. Cimarron won the girls title with 55 points, with Meade (64) and Beaver OK (68) follwoing. Vivian Olvera (Southwestern Heights) ran 13:26 to two miles to win, with Cimarron's Kelli Kopper (13:41) second.

 

Nebraska

Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational @ Pioneers Park, Lincoln 9/3/05

Top-ranked Fremont and Marian, Omaha lived up to their rankings, routing the boys and girls fields, respective, in the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite. HL#7 Fremont scored 25 points in boys race and HL#10 Marian 29 in the girls. Bruce Chrisensen led Fremont, running 16:47 to win. Emily Romesser (Bellevue West) won the girls title. More details will be reported later.
