Emporia (led by individual champ Michaela Reynolds) was second with 51, while Ottawa edged Shawnee Heights, Topeka on the pusher, both scoring 117, for third. 6A REGIONALS:

Shawnee Mission Park Regional, Shawnee 5k boys, 4k girls (on-site report)

The Shawnee Mission Park regional traditionally gathers teams from Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley and Olathe, three of the strongest cross country areas in the state, and proceeds generally grind at least two state ranked teams out of the state meet. 2005 was no exception, as seven of the state's top ten ranked girls teams and six of the top ten ranked boys teams fought it out in cold, wind and rain, with only four to advance to state. The meet was filled with intensity, drama, a touch of controversy, and the usual wretching combination of heartache, relief, and joy.

The boys race was seen as a show-down between #1 ranked HL#5 Shawnee Mission Northwest and #2 ranked (and OSU Jamboree champ) Blue Valley North. But SMNW quickly eliminated any question of who was strongest this Saturday by running 1-2-3 on the field and dominating with 30 points. Tucker Weems (15:36), Bret Imgrund (16:04) and Josh Weems (16:16) simply went to front, and at various points pulled away from fourth placer Aaron Geary of Blue Valley North (16:18). John McCormick (SM East) was third at 16:22. SMNW was finished out scoring wise by Rick Stahl (4th 16:23) and Will O'Donnell (16th 16:55). #6 ranked Shawnee Mission South (74) ran a well paced race to surprise Blue Valley North (81) for second. The battle for fourth came down to which team could survive the elements best and comethrough, as all the contenders dealt with runners either falling, running back or failing to finish. Olathe South (151) edged # 8 Shawnee Mission North (152) by a single digit to qualify, with Shawnee Mission East (159), Olathe East (168), and Blue Valley Northwest (168) also in the hunt down the final straightaway.

The girls race promised even more intensity and heartache as #1 Shawnee Mission Northwest, #2 Blue Valley North, #3 Blue Valley Northwest, #4 Olathe East, #6 Olathe South, #8 Blue Valley and #9 Shawnee Mission South all toed the line as the cold rains came. That's seven of the state's top nine ranked teams piled into one regional. Quickly a pack of defending state champ Laura Roxberg (Blue Valley Northwest), Amanda Miller (Olathe East, Sunflower League runner-up), Erin Beck (Blue Valley North, EKL runner-up to Roxberg) and Kelli Russell (Olathe South, Sunflower League champ) broke form the field and proceeded to simply hammer each other. Roxberg and Miller moved away by mile and a half mark, with Roxberg getting clear with an 800 to go, and appearing to run a sub 15:00 4k on the hilly course. (A timing malfunction erased official times). Miller placed second at 15:18 (coaches time). and was followed shortly across the line by Beck (third) and Russell fourth. Blue Valley Northwest's Hannah Hayes was fifth (probably also under 16:00).

Then came the most controversial finish of the day, as Haley Beggs (Shawnee Mission South sixth) moved past BVN's Anne Dunning and Lauren Holt. Dunning and Holt grasped hands briefly in the final straight, and brought into question the legality of the move. A disqualification would have moved BVN out of the top four teams. The games committee ruled that the brief grasp did not affect the race standings of other runners, and was not seen as an undue assistance of another runner, and so the finish of the two runners' stood.

As the rain cleared tension mounted all around as team scores were tabulated. Blue Valley North won with 69 points, with Shawnee Mission Northwest second with 80, and Blue Valley Northwest third with 90. The all-important fourth went to Olathe East with 100 points, just four ahead of rival Olathe South (104). Strong teams from Shawnee Mission South (140), Shawnee Mission East (153) and Blue Valley (153) followed.

In a close team race, Derby (71) edged Garden City (74) and Maize (78) for the boy's team title at the Wichita Regional. Dodge City (107) ran past Goddard (136) for the final boy's qualifying spot. Eisenhauer certainly remedied that problem, cruising over the 5k route in 16:08 for an overwhelming victory. Brandon Haist led Derby, finishing second at 16:49, while Brock Lindsey (Goddard) was third at 16:53.
