Atchison, the defending boys 4A state 4 x 100 champs, look loaded up again, winning that event with a fine early season 42.88. Atchison's Wes Downing also won the 100 (11.23) and 200 (22.83).

Topeka High Relays @ Hummer Sports Park, Topeka
Some of the state's top teams and talents met at Topeka's sparkling Hummer Sports Park on the first Friday of season to feature nice weather this year, and the results showed it!
In the boy's team race, defending 6A state champ Hutchinson scored 81 points to edge Leavenworth (78), with Seaman, Topeka third with 68 points and Lawrence fourth with 61. Leavenworth scored 124 to upend 2004 state champ Hutchinson (81) in the girls team scoring, with Emporia (74.33) third and Highland Park, Topeka fourth with 60.
On the boys side, Hutchinson opened the track action with a close 8:23.65 4 x 800 win over Leavenworth (8:25.65), then it was time for the Jared Huske show. The Highland Park senior won the 110H in a hand-timed 13.5, the second fastest time in Kansas state history. Huske then returned with an 11.09 against the wind 100 triumph, and won the 300H for over three seconds, running 37.46. Huske also ran on Highland Park's 4 x 100 which dropped the baton and dnf'd. Leavenworth ran 43.78 to win that race.
Huske was not the only show, however as top marks abounded. In the field, Leavenworth's Roger Thomas threw the javelin 171-0 to win, Scott Penny (Lawrence) won the shot at 51-4, and Dustin Hoffer (Seaman, Topeka) threw the disc 153-9, the same as Wichita North's Underwood (no first name provided), but won on backup throws.
Hutchinson's Jacob Fuller won the TJ by over three feet at 47-3.5, and was second in the long jump (21-11.5) to Seaman's junior Brandon Wegner (22-3.25). Hutchinson's Donnie Crawford won the 400 at 50.90. Hutchinson also won the 4 x 400 in 3:28.44.
Distances were strong, with Emporia's Nick Garcia winning the 1600 at 4:29.29 from team-mate Shea Camien (4;30.42). Camien then won the 3200 at 9:53.95 from Hayden, Topeka senior JP Meyer's (9:56.40).
Leavenworth's ladies got their meet off to a strong start with a 10:26.43 4 x 800 win, then turned loose their speed. Senior Charity Stowers won the HJ at 5-4, then won the 400 at 58.02 (ahead of team-mate Kendra Bradley 58.80), and placed second in the 200 at 25.93. Selana Burns won the 100H at 15.0, and Leavenworth won the 4 x 100 at 49.67 over Highland Park, Topeka (50.18).
Lexi Beaudet led Hutchinson, winning the LJ (17-1 over Emporia's Heather Stanborough 16-8.25) and 200 (25.93).
Blue Valley Northwest freshman Laura Roxberg won deep races in the 1600 (5:16.85, with defending 6A 1600 champ second at 5:17.34 and Emporia's Layne Moore third at 5;21.03) and 800 2:19.98 (edging Moore 2:20.38 and Bonds 2:21.90).

Maize-Wichita Southeast Invitational @ Cessna Stadium, Wichita

Wichita Heights, last years 6A runner-up, showed it still has talent to burn with a 111 point total to win the Maize-Wichita SE Invite at Cessna Stadium, site of the Kansas State Meet. Bishop Carroll (Wichita) was second with 81.5 points, edging third place Maize (80).

Newton won a close girls race with 93 points, ahead of Kapaun Mt.-Camel (Wichita 88.50 and Maize (88).

Speed was in evidence as Odell Harris (Wichita West) won the 100 and 200 in 10.60 and 22.29. Tevan Everett took a 400 (49.91) and 800 (1:58.87) double, and Maize's Alex Umbarger won the 1600 (4:26.97) and 3200 (9:43.57). Heights also won the 4 x 400 in 3;28.36. Top field mark was Reilly McKay (Goddard 6-2 HJ).

Chrisdell Harris (Wichita West) took a fast girls 100 in 12.11, ahead of freshman Audacia Moore (Heights, Wichita 12.24) and Sylvia Alexander (Wichita Southeast 12.36). Southeast took a 49.41 4 x 100 win. Harris also won the LJ at 17-9.

Courtney Johnson (Kapaun-Mt.Carmel) won the 1600 at 5:32.51, Taylor Shultz (Maize) took the 800 at 2:24.83 and Elizabeth Marsh (Wichita East) then 3200 at 12;20.48. Kapuan-Mt. Carmel took the 4 x 800 by a wide margin at 10:18.91.

Newton's Janae Voelker took all three throws with bg marks of 44-7.5 (SP), 128-3 (DT) and 130-3 (JT).

Bishop Miege Invitational @ Bishop Miege, HS, Roeland Park
Bishop Miege swept to victory in both the boys and girls division, the boys scoring 207 and more the doubling runner-up Wyandotte, Kansas City's 100. The girls scored 210, with Ruskin out of Kansas City MO second with 137.
Speed was the name of the game for the Miege girls, with sophomores Shalila Williams winning the 100 (12.19), Leslie Reynolds the 200 (26.25), and Melesa Johnson sweeping the hurdles (14.9/ 49.31). Miege also won the 4 x 100 at 50.42 and 4 x 400 at 4:13.27. Other top marks on the girls side included a 59.72 win for Cole from Ruskin (no first name provided). Angel Iluno of Harmon, Kansas City went 5-2 to win the HJ, and St. Teresa's, Kansas City MO won the 4 x 800 at 10:22.5.
