SM West Invitational @ Shawnee Mission Park, Shawnee 10/9/04
    A perfect morning for running the hills of Shawnee Mission Park greeted over 20 teams at the Shawnee Mission West Invitational.  Run by classes, and unscored as teams, the meet hosted over 700 runners.  Jana Gwinn (Blue Valley North 15:00) and Kristen Wolkey (SM North 15:34) got things off to a hot start, with a blazing senior girls race to lead things off.  Gwinn's time held up as the fastest of the day's 4k's by over 20 seconds.  A thrilling senior boys race saw David Zac (SM West) run 16:49 to edge Drew Beggs (SM South 16;50).  Kara Windlisch (BV West) won the sophomore girls race in 16;30, with Kelsy Long (Miege) second at 16:34.  Mark Hirschman (BV North) pulled away in the stretch from Jonathan Baker (BV West) to win the sophomore boys race 17:00 to 17:05.  Lauren Holt (BV North) ran 16:10 to pull away from Alyssa Belinder (Aquinas) 16:15 and Heather Klotz (Leaveworth) 16;17 to win the junior girls race, and Blue Valley North's Aaron Geary posted the fastest boys time of the day, winnning the junior race in 16;23, with BV West's Tim Specht second at 16;54.  Laura Roxbert (BV Northwest) won the freshman girls race in 15:24, and was challenged throughout by Kelly Renfro (Lawrence), who was second in 15:35.  Phillip Hickman (Blue Springs) won the freshman boys race handily, with Dylan Hedges (Lawrence) second at 18:02.  #5 Heartland boys Shawnee Mission Northwest competed here, but appeared to rest their varsity team.

Eudora Invitational:  Defending 5A state champ Gardner-Edgerton easily won the boys title with 31 points, with Louisburg second (75) and Eudora third (100).  Tolan Lichty (17:26) and Nate Thiesfeld (17:27) led G-E with a 1-2 finish, as Miles Acinger (Spring Hill) was a close third at 17:28.  DeSoto (28) won the girls title with Eudora second (59) and Gardner-Edgerton third (114).  Brittney Graff (Eudora) won the individual title easlily in 12:14 for two miles, with Melissa Roberts (DeSoto) and Mogran Frehe (DeSoto) running 12:45 for second and third.
 
El Dorado Invitational 10/9/04:  Emporia swept to the boys and girls team titles at El Dorado.  Heartland #8 Emporia scored 34 to win the boys title, with El Dorado second (102) and Great Bend third (125).  Brock Phillips (Wichita East)  roared over the rolling 5k course to win in 15;57, with Levi Cobb (Hutchinson) second at 16:05.  Nick Garcia (16;13) and Shea Camien (16:17) led Emporia in 4-5, with Josh Weidner (Wichita East) fifth at 16:23. 
   

Emporia scored 40 to win the girls title, with El Dorado second at 87 and Kapaun Mt.Carmel of Wichita third with 104.  Lauren Bonds (Hutchinson) ran 11:40 to win the girls 2 mile, with Courtney Johnson (KMC) second at 11:49.  Layne Moore (11:54) and Michaela Reynolds (11:57) ran 3-4 for Emporia, with Hali Morley (Andover) fifth at 12:01.

Kansas

Haskell Flyers Sweepstakes @ Haskell University, Lawrence 10/6/04
    Running over the same course that Billy Mills trained on, the Haskell Sweepstakes is a unique test of total team strength.  The meet scores ten runners in the boys and girls races, and then combines the scores for the sweepstakes trophy.  A cool cloud cover made for a perfect day of running.  Danny Schneider (15:55 5k) and Alysha Valencia (14:57 4k) gave host Free State a pair of fast victors in each race.  Both Schneider and Valencia used the same strategy:  hammer to the front on the uphill start and stay there.      The Olathe East girls (ranked #3 KS 6A) packed well behind Valencia to win the girls title.  Amanda Miller led East, placing second at 15:30, with Ashli Kelso, Mandy Puhak, Claire Markway, and Riley Wertenberger going 3-4-5-6 packed between 15:54 and 15:56. East scored 92 points ahead of Lawrence Free State's 152.    In a match-up of two of the top boys team in the state, Free State (#3 6A) topped Olathe South (#8 6A). Free State scored 118 in ten deep scoring, with South tieing Olathe East for second at 186.     Free State won the Sweepstakes title with 270 points in combined scoring, edging Olathe East's 276.  Olathe South was third with 446 points.

 Topeka City Championships: Seaman wins boys, girls titles 10/9/04
Seaman High School won both the boys and girls titles at the Topeka City Championships, held Saturday at Shawnee North Activities Center.
The boys, led by individual champ Grant Cain (defending 5A state champ), scored 29 points to easily win, with Topeka High second with 78. Cain rain 16:29, with Shawnee Heights Matt Riheimer second in 16:55.
Seaman's girls scored 46 to shade Washburn Rural's 54. Sarah Conrow (Washburn Rural) won the city title, running 12:37 for two miles.
Hannah Lowry (Hayden) was second at 12:46 with Seaman's Autumn Kidwell one second back.

Riley County Invitational @ Leonardville Golf Course, 10/9/04
One of the largest small school invitationals in east-central Kansas, the Riley County invite year after years provides quality competition. Katie Henry, a freshman at host Riley County, ripped to a 12:30 two mile win, with Jennifer Butler (Bennington) second at 13:07 and Samantha Jack (Riley County) third at 13:11. Katie Garcia (Mission Valley 13:15), and Whitney Mosier (Riley County 13:16) rounded out the top five. Riley County place five scorers in the top 25 to easily win the girls team title with 53 points, with Bennington second (109) and Mission Valley third (111).
Clinton MacDonald (Southeast of Saline) ran 17:16 to edge Thad Powell (Cornerstone Christian of Topeka) by one second for the boys title. David Gibson (Blue Valley-Randolph 17;40), Michael Loring (Pike Valley 17;46) and Craig Koster (Bennington 18:13) rounded out the top five. Pike Valley (top ranked in KS 1A) scored 58 to edge Southeast of Saline (63) for the boys team title, with Cornerstone third at 87.

Ellsworth Invitational 10/5/04
Ellsworth (43) edged Abilene (52) for the boys title, with Hillsboro (87) third in a battle of state ranked 3A and 4A powers at
Ellsworth. Tyler Fennerman (Abilene) ran 17:21 to edge Andrew Falcon
(17:24, Sacred Heart of Salina) for the boys title. Simon Orozco
(17:40) and Tyler Bailey (17;41) led Ellsworth in 3-4. In girls action, Ellsworth put three runners in the top ten and scored 35 to easily win the team title, with Beloit (71) and Sacred Heart (77) second and third.
Aubrey Frederking (Natoma) looks like a 1A state contender, winning in
12:28 for two miles. Patricia Leal (Ellsworth 12:53), Crystal Stegman (Sacred Heart 12:55), and Tahnee Matuszewicz (Ellsworth 12:57) staged a close race for second.

 
Minnesota
Heartland #7 Hopkins won the Blaine(10/7/04) Invitational with a score of 32 to
White bear lakes 97 and Tartans 97 points.   Top two girls Emily
Schwitzer ran 14:33 for 4K and Angie Henry ran 14:43 for 4K.
 

Lions Meet of Champions (5,000 meters) 10/9/04:  Marshall scored 42 points to easily win the boys title, with Wilmar (89), Stillwater (101) and Chaska (140) following.  Dahir Jumale (15:39) and Yabya Iman (15:51) ran 1-2 for Marshall, with Tim Branigan (Roseville) third (15:55).  Roseville scored 62 to win the girls title, with Staples-Motley (101) second and Stillwater (110) third.  Kari Higdem (Wilmar) zipped to a 14:20 4k win, with Mallory VanNess (Mounds View) second at 14:33 and Brooke Wyfells (Marshall) third at (14:35).

 
Nebraska
GNAC Meet at Scottsbluff 10/7/04
   Kearney scored 40 to edge Scottsbluff (43) for the boys title, with Norfolk (101) third.
Sufian Kimo (Norfolk) ran 16:13 for the title, with Kevin Stubbs (Kearney 16:37) secind and Michael McKinney (Scottsbluff) third at 16;46.  Kearney won the girls title with 44 points, with Columbus (52) second and Norfolk third (56).  Stephanie Powell (Columus) won the girls title in 16;20, with Stephanie Matzek (Kearney ) seconda t 16;28 and Jennev Heng (Norflolk) thid at 16;43.

 

Missouri

Excelsior Springs Invitational Tuesday 10/5/05

Lee's Summit North Girls Roll to win
Lee's Summit North's girls scored 39 points to overwhelm the field in the 4A division of the Excelsior Springs Invitational Tuesday. St. Teresa's Kansas City MO was second with 89 points and a Liberty JV squad third with 175. In the 3A division Notre Dame de Sion Kansas City MO was first with 89 points, with Warrensburg second with 245 and Harrisonville third with 255. Anna Florzak of Notre Dame de Sion was the overall winner with a time of 19:14 for 5k, edging Elizabeth Keaveny of St. Teresa's (19:17). Jamie Haffner of Pleasant Hill was third at 19:24, with the Lee's Summit North duo of Lindsay Pierson (19:38) and Kari Fritchie (19:49) fourth and fifth.
In the boys race Lee's Summit West scored 94 to win the 3A division with Benton St. Joseph second with 101 and Marshall third with 137. Truman Independence won the 4A division with 114 points, followed by Liberty's JV squad with 204 and William Chrisman Independence with 268. Josh Ehrhard (16:04) and Cam Cundiff (16:31) ran 1-2 for Lee's Summit West, with Matt Haffner of Pleasant Hill third at 16:33. David Hofman (William Chrisman (16;43) and Taylor Kennedy (Warrensburg 16:44) rounded out the top five.

South Dakota

Yankton Sweeps East Dakota Conference crowns Ramsey Kavan stormed to a sub 14:00 4k to lead Yankton to a sweep of the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet. Kavan ran 13:44 and led team mates Betsy Bies, Yankton, 14:16, Amanda Kuchta,  15:11,  Kristin Sternhagen, Yankton, 15:17 and  Tiffany Leader, 15:18 across the line in the first five places.    Yankton also won the boys meet, scoring 24 points, and was led by individual winner Jon Williams (16:24).  Second went to Aderdeen Central's Mitch Fields (16;40).  Aberdeen Central placed second in both team races with 80 (boys) and 74 (girls) points.
