Regional Cross Country Report - Sep 4, 2004

Missouri - Nebraska - Kansas -

HL#3 Liberty MO boys and HL#9 Kearney boys win.
Freshman Laura Roxberg has strong debut.

Kansas

Blue Valley Challenge @ Heritage Park, Olathe KS 9/4/02
Laura Roxberg (Blue Valley Northwest freshman), fresh off a Summer Olympic season that included a 2:11 800, took the measure of defending 6A state champ and Harrier pre-season All American Jana Gwinn (Blue Valley North) with a mid-race surge and ran 12:09 to win the Blue Valley Challenge over a challenging two mile course. Gwinn ran 12:30 to place second, with Amanda Miller (Olathe East) third at 12:50. Miller led four Olathe East team mates into the top ten and six into the top fifteen, as East (ranked #2 in 6A state polls) scored 43 to win.
Unranked SM South, bolstered by new talent, was second at 62, with Blue Valley North (last year's 6A) state runnerup and ranked #4) third at 73 and Blue Valley Northwest (#10 6A fourth with 96.
Aaron Geary led Blue Valley North to the boys title with a 10:29 win. Timmy Specht (Blue Valley West) was second at 10:37. Blue Valley North scored 36 for an easy win with Olathe South (74) and Blue Valley Hiigh (78) third.

Great Bend Invite 9/2/04
In a matchup of 5A girls powers #2 ranked Hays scored 40 to win from #4 Great Bend (61). Garden City was third with 85 points. Hutchinson's Lauren Bonds, a 6A title contender, ran to a clear victory in 12:15, with Kaitlyn Coen (12:35) and Hayley Charles (12;43) leading Hays in second and third. Salina South (#10 5A) ran to an easy win with 35 points, over Buhler (#5 4A) 61, Great Bend (#5 5A) 68, and Hays (#10 5A) 93. Hutchinson's Levi Cobb made the individual titles a SaltHawk sweep, running 16;59 to win. Salina South's Scott Thompson was second at 17:30 and Jeff Russell of Buhler third at 17:35.

Meade Invitational 9/2/04
In a matchup of western Kansas boys small school powers, Meade (#2 2A) edged South Gray (#3 1A) 60-63. Chad Herrera (Deerfield) ran 18:18 over 5k to win in very hot conditions. Hugoton (#5 4A) scored 35 to win from Meade (#6 2A with 53). Kristen Radcliffe (Forgan OK) crossed the border to run 12:31 and win from Breanna Yost (South Gray 12:53).

Missouri

Liberty Invitational 9/4/04 @ Liberty: Liberty boys (HL#3) and girls roll to wins in both varsity divisions in the first edition of their home meet.
Kip Hill ran 11:33 for 2.15 to lead the Jays to 20 points in the boys division, with Kansas City Oak Park second with 70 and St. Joseph Central third with 77. Bridget Moran of Kansas City St. Teresa won the girls title with a 14:31 and Liberty's Rachel Newland was second at 14;38. Liberty won with 24 points, followed by Lee's Summit (55) and St. Joseph Central (87).

Capital City Challenge 9/4/04 @ Jefferson City: Lee's Summit North ran away to a 28 point total to win the girls division, led by individual champion Ashley Mark (19:34 5k). Jen Wilkinson (Ft. Zumwalt South) was second at 19:38, with Lindsay Pierson of Lee's Summit North third at 20:40.
Jefferson City was second in the team race with 44 points and Francis Howell Central third at 87,
Jefferson City won the boys title with 47 points, followed by Parkway South (69) and Ft. Zumwalt South (85). Ben Brammerer (Parkway South) won easily in 16;34, with Prince Nworkie (Jefferson City) second in 17:08 and Nathan Young (Ft. Zumwalt South) third at 17:08

Nebraska

Cozad Invite 9/2/04 Kearney boys (HL#9) and girls sweep team titles..
Desi Swanson, out for the first time for Cross Country,wins the girls title in 16;15 for 4k.

Burke Invitational 9/4/04 @ Omaha: Youth was served as Millard West freshman Brittany Poole and Millard North sophomore Matt Conahan won titles at Chalco Hills Rec Area. Poole ran 15:28 for 4k and led her Millard West team (37 points) to the title with Millard North (50) and Omaha Burke (61) following.
Conahan (17:06) held off the late charge of Todd Gulizia (Millard South 17:08) to win, and also led his team to the team championship with 58 points.

Millard West (95) and Omaha Burke (100) were second and third.
