2A Recap - Jackie Joyner's 26-year-old long jump record was the one Alex the Great wanted the most, and she got it.

text by Tony Jones, Illinois Prep Top Times - photos by Patrick Sullivan

Evanston came into Saturday's championship knowing they would have to get the most out of each of their athlete in order to secure their third straight championship. The Wildkits prevailed once more over rival Chicago Morgan Park 87-71 in a great championship.

Each event captured its moment in time and the fans can look back years later and realize the 2005 edition of the Girls 2A championship was one of the best if not the best of all-time.

Alexandria Anderson

Long jump-

•  Alexandria Anderson ( Chicago Morgan Park) 20-9

•  Arielle McAlpin ( Evanston ) 18-5

•  April Anderson ( E. St. Louis ) 18-3.50

Summary: Alex the Great is her moniker and she proved true by breaking Jackie Joyner's 26 year-old record. Anderson indicated that this was the record that she wanted most. Anderson achieved her record mark on her first jump.

Pole vault-

•  Mary Pat Choules (Mahomet-Seymour) 12-0

•  Kaylin Himes ( Rockford Guilford ) 12-0

•  Taylor Troemel (Normal Community) 12-0

Summary: Choules has been consistent throughout the year as she won on fewer misses. Himes finished a surprising a strong but surprising second. Indoor champion Dianna Noonan (Lincoln-Way East) was fifth.

High Jump-

•  Nicole Williams ( Sterling ) 5-7

•  Erin Ballun ( Oswego ) 5-6

•  Laura Morris (Mahomet-Seymour) 5-5

Summary: Williams completed a sweep of her own by winning her fourth straight championship. In the process, Williams avenged her indoor title loss to the upstart Morris.

Shot Put-

•  Jessica Travers (Prospect) 42-0.25

•  Jenna Silver ( York ) 41-7.75

•  Cora Caulfield (Grant) 41-6.25

Summary: this was perhaps the lowest rated but evenly match event of the championship. Travers' victory was a mild upset but she seemed very pleased with the victory. Pre-meet favorites Danielle Eiler (Grant) and Angela Stockczynski ( Hoffman Estates ) failed to live up to the billing. Stockczynski didn't make the final.

Triple jump-

•  Casey Taylor (Marian Catholic) 40-3.25

•  Kathryn Gevitz ( Oak Park-River Forest ) 38-7.50

•  Arielle McAlpin ( Evanston ) 38-3.50

Summary: Taylor has been the best leap-frogger over the past three years. She decisively prevailed over Gevitz. It was believed that Aleisha Leeper ( Freeport ), who is a sophomore, will be the heir apparent to Taylor , finished a disappointing 6 th .

Discus Throw-

•  Emma Schmelzer ( Bloomington ) 144-5

•  Danielle Eiler (Grant) 142-0

•  Jewel Sanders ( Peoria Richwoods) 137-0

Summary: for the most part things went as expected. Schmelzer held off Eiler for the hard fought victory. Schmelzer improved vastly from last year when she was ninth in the final.

800m medley relay-

•  Thornwood 1:45.74

•  Conant 1:45.93

•  E. St. Louis 1:46.16

Summary: E. St. Louis got the first track final off to an electrifying start through the first three legs. Morgan Park had sophomore Tierra Russell on the anchor and she appeared to be gaining ground on E. St. Louis ' Kristin Chism. Chism began to break down about with 75m left. Conant anchor Lauren Martin made the first strike to pass a fading Chism, but Thornwood's Sequoia McKinney blazed past both in a sickening 55.1 leg.

4x800m relay-

•  Palatine 9:14.79 [2:17.0, 2:21.7, 2:21.7. 2:16.5]

•  Benet Academy 9:17.94

•  Lake Forest 9:19.09

Summary: The anticipated match up between Palatine and Naperville North never materialized as the Pirates led wire to wire. Coach Steve Currin's crew ran determined through each leg and logged the 4 th fastest time ever. Naperville North was final favorite but their second leg runner ran a damaging 2:29.5. 11 of the 12 finalists teams were from the Chicago area. 10 of the 12 finalists ran under 9:30. Observers across the nation will have to take notice of the incredible middle and long distance that Illinois has.

4x100m relay-

•  E. St. Louis 47.80

•  Homewood-Flossmoor 48.07

•  Chicago Lane Tech 48.47

Summary: ESL was odds on favorite here. At the very least they wanted to get one relay victory after a horrendous weekend. It was absolutely no contest as the Flyerettes ran away. HF held off upstart impressive Lane Tech for the runner up spot. The Lane Tech quartet were pleased with their efforts, realizing they did something no other squad from their school was able to achieve- a chance to be a state champion.

3200m-

•  Ashley Raymond (Glenbard South) 10:40.28

•  Amy Laskowske ( Palatine ) 10:45.06

•  Jane Simpson ( Lyons ) 10:49.70

Summary: Raymond upset two-time defending champion Laskowske. Raymond made her decisive move during the sixth lap and never looked back. Early on it appeared as if 4 th place finisher Kelly Vrshek (Rolling Meadows) would challenge for the victory as she was in contention until about half way through. Perhaps the soaring temperatures impacted some of the favorites as the index on the track appeared hotter than normal.

100m HH-

•  Shalina Clarke ( Evanston ) 13.93

•  Seun Adigun (Homewood-Flossmoor) 14.19

•  Megan Thompson ( Joliet Twp) 14.48

Summary: Clarke was shadowed very closely by former teammate Adigun through five barriers. Clarke used a last burst of speed to prevail. Perhaps Clarke was being cautiously optimistic because of her pending showdown with Anderson in the 100m.

100m-

•  Anderson 11.61

•  Clarke 12.05

•  Demeca Hill ( Evanston ) 12.25

Summary: Anderson dazzled the track faithful in her first track final. She won rather easy. In defense of Clarke, who just ran the hurdle final about five minutes previously, appeared somewhat tight right out the blocks. Still, the goal at state is to score the maximum points not necessary put on a show. Evanston 's two finalist scored 15 points to Anderson 's 10.

800m-

•  Sequoia McKinney (Thornwood) 2:09.07 [61.7/67.3]

•  Kim Smudde ( Geneva ) 2:09.35

•  Jen Toler (Elk Grove) 2:10.50 [58.9/1:35.5]

Summary: Toler has one gear and that is to go out hard and press the pace and crush everyone in her wake. Opening up in national record pace for the first 400m was a concern for the entire field, including McKinney . Said the defending champ: I was real concerned at first but my coach told me she likes to go out real hard and then fade. I knew I had her [coming off the last curve]. McKinney and Smudde caught Toler with 40m left and McKinney held off a strong Smudde for the victory. This race was one for the record book as it was the best 800m race in Illinois history. Never has there been two girls under 2:10 in the same race. 11 of the 12 finishers were under 2:19. McKinney added I going to try to go under 2:05 next year

4x200m relay-

•  Chicago Morgan Park 1:40.95

•  Evanston 1:41.26

•  Loyola Academy 1:42.10

Summary: The Mustangs over the Wildkits in a battle that sustained through all four legs. In fact, five teams had an opportunity to win the relay, but it came down to the anchor legs and MP had Aja Evans, and she is simply hard to beat. Evans is a medallist in the shot put and also a cog on MP relays.

400m-

•  Anderson 52.63

•  Deserea Brown (Homewood-Flossmoor) 55.23

•  Brianna Officer ( Palatine ) 55.36

Summary: in most years 55.23 would win the state championship. This year it was nearly three seconds back of the champion. Anderson was serious as ever as she hit the first 200m in 24.6. Coming down the homestretch the scoreboard clock was in the low 40's and the crowd began to roar sensing history in the making once again. Anderson somehow found another burst of something to break the record in an all-time best ever run for an Illinois prepster.

300LH-

•  Clarke 40.61

•  Adigun 43.87

•  Destiny Dulin ( Belleville East) 44.50

Summary: Evanston coaches indicated that they tell their kids to focus on themselves and not opponent's accomplishments in the heat of the battle. But how could anyone not appreciate something unreal the event before. Clarke is human and somehow she had to feel what the crowd felt from Anderson 's record- breaking performance. Clarke had her way with her opponents too as she set a new state meet record and #1 in the USA . This had to soothe the feelings she might have been feeling during the Alex show. The national record of 39.98 by Lashinda Demus ( California ) was in serious jeopardy but a misstep over hurdle #4 cost Clarke the record.

1600m-

•  Hailee Elmore ( Springfield ) 4:57.18

•  Chelsea Bolton (Palatine Fremd) 4:59.54

•  Shannon Phelan ( Naperville North) 4:59.55

Summary: a very solid race overall and it is good to see that Illinois girls are competing well in this event again. Nearly all12 finalists were under 5:10. Consider the fact that several others scratched, which meant there could have been faster times recorded. In terms of Elmore's victory, the third time is the charm for the kid who fancies Tennis in the fall. Elmore used an even race to run under 5:00 (2:28 first half). Bolton nipped Phelan for the runner-up slot.

200m-

•  Anderson 23.32

•  Clarke 24.18

•  Hill 24.71

Summary: Anderson completed her last race in Illinois in fine fashion and another all-time state best was achieved. It really wasn't a contest as Anderson pulled away from everyone at the middle of the curve. Evanston appeared to seal the team victory here with a 2-3 finish. Five underclassmen competed in this event, which probably assures the health of the dashes for some years down the road.

4x400m-

•  Homewood-Flossmoor 3:50.50

•  Palatine 3:53.29

•  Barrington 3:53.35

Summary: The grand finale didn't disappoint the track and field stalwarts, as the event was NASCAR like for the duration. Homewood-Flossmoor knew they had to win the event in order to earn one of the three trophies. Adigun got things off to a flying start but HF's second leg gave it up to Palatine, Edwardsville, and Barrington . The four teams jockeyed around three turns until the third leg. HF soph Jasmin Clark blazed the back-stretch, this appeared to catch the others off stride and off guard. By the time Brown received the baton the race was over. Her 55.6 leg sealed the deal.
