Meet Recap
by Ron Jones (rojo), InsideTexasTrack.com
The Carl Lewis Indoor Invitational should be designated as the Texas Indoor state meet because it was a who's who in Texas track and field. There were state winners, state medalists, and state participants down in Houston. Among the who's who list were Brandi Cross of Fort Bend Marshall, Porscha Lucas of Plano, LeJerald Betters of Waco, Fort Worth Dunbar's Victoria Jordan, Dickerson's Cordera Jenkings, and Sandy Wooten of Mineral Wells -- just to name a few of the 2005 state gold medalists. It was a long day of track and field, but some nation-leading results were produced.
It felt like those in attendance were in heaven because the track was paved in GOLD!!! The ladies of Dallas Gold were everywhere on Saturday. In the 400, DG had 3 athletes finish in the top 8, with Mineral Wells' Sandy Wooten going down to the wire with Pearland's Erica Alexander. Both Alexander and Wooten battled each other the whole 400 meters. In the end it was Alexander edging out Wooten winning in a time of 56.21. Wooten finished second in a time of 56.37.
In the 200, DG finished 5 of the top 8 finishers. In the 60, DG filled 8 of the 16 vacant spots for the finals. The second heat of the finals looked like a day at a Dallas Gold practice, the club filling 6 of the 8 lanes. Although most of the lanes were filled by the ladies of Dallas Gold, they were all chasing Bianca Knight. Knight, a visitor to the Lone Star State, is the nation's leader and junior class national record-holder in the 60 and the 200. On Saturday, she showed why she is the best, running away from the field in both the 60 and the 200. Both of her races broke the previous meet records and she was named the outstanding girl's track athlete of the meet. Her time of 7.26 is the fastest time in the nation in the 60 meters and equal third best in history.
Other top national times were set in Houston over the weekend. In the girls 60 meter hurdles, Dallas Skyline's April Williams improved her national leading time with a blazing time of 8.43. Dickerson's Cordera Jenkins left the competition in the 60 meters hurdles with a national leading time of 7.91. In the boys 400, Waco's LeJerald Betters used his long stride to carry him to a 1st place finish, despite being put in the third heat. His winning time was 48.98.
The male outstanding track athlete went to Barbe LA's Trey Harts, whose winning time in the 200 tops the national leader board. Harts time was 21.75. He also clocked the fastest time in the 60 heats, another national leader of 6.86, but bypassed the final to run the 400 and 200. He won the first heat of the 400, but saw his 49.65 bettered by Betters.
In the girls pole vault, McKinney's Britany Parker put it down clearing a nation-leading height 13-4, while FB Marshall's Brittany Carter cleared 5-8 in the girls high jump to win the competition and rank her herself #1 in the nation (with four others). Parker and Julius Walker of Texas City, who became the country's first 7-foot high jumper of 2006, were the most outstanding field event athletes of the meet.
The girl's 4x400 relays proved to be the deciding round between two heavyweights. In corner #1 you had the all-star team from Dallas Gold. In corner #2 you had last year's state champion FB Marshall. This was the 3rd time this year the two have met. Down in LSU, it was the Buffaloes taking the first round. Last week in Arkansas, Dallas Gold provided their own knockout punch winning round 2. The final round proved to be a dogfight until the very end. All the legs came around just about dead even. The final leg Marshall's Brandi Cross got a slim lead over Sandy Wooten, but the two battled every meter of the way. Wooten ran hard but could not overtake the lead from Cross. Marshall finished with a time of 3:53.75, just shy of the national lead.
