Girls Recap w/ Photos - Boys Recap w/ Photos

As usual this meet drew many of the best teams in Texas as it offers an opportunity to run at the state meet site.  This deep field included 4 US and 12 South ranked teams.  The 5000m course used for the boys & girls elite Gold Division races was in good condition and is the same course used for the Boys state meet.  The Girls state meet course is only 3200m, but uses the same 1st mile and most the 3rd mile as this course.  The weather was 77 degrees and cloudy.

Habben Berhane (Lake Highlands) leads Brandon Birdsong (Lubbock Monterey)

The early lead pack included Flower Mound sr J B Lagos and Lake Highlands sr Habben Berhane.  As they passed the mile in 4:43 Berhane had a step on Lagos while SO#2 Corpus Christi King appeared to be in good position teamwise with their pack around 20th. Up the incline to the far corner of the course Berhane opened a 10m gap on Lagos while Monterey sr Brandon Birdsong had moved up. Coming back down the incline Birdsong broke free of the chase pack of Lagos, Vista Ridge jr Travis Fort and Boswell sr Jared McNeil and he closed on Berhane. Berhane and Birdsong were side-by-side through 2 miles in about 9:55 (unmarked) while A&M jr Duncan Phillips had moved into 7th and looked strong. King sr Ari Perez was also up there and his team continued to be locked in a tight battle with SO#1 Flower Mound. In the last 400m Habben Berhane began to pull away from Brandon Birdsong and he continued on to a 15:28 to 15:35 victory.  Travis Fort also finished well for 3rd in 15:44 with J B Lagos 4th in 15:48 to nip Jared McNeil in the same time. Plano’s Brian Lind was 6th in 15:51 and Ari Perez 7th in 15:53.
