SO#1/US#18 Corpus Christi King TX
- met SO#7 Del Rio TX in a battle of the unbeatens at Region IV-5A.  Del Rio came up big to win 53-57 over King with Judson taking the final state spot with 130 points.  King sr Ari Perez won individual gold in 16:45 as hot weather slowed the field.  Richard Small of Judson won silver in 16:49 followed by Del Rio sr Danny Ponce in 16:52 for 3rd.  This is the 1st time Del Rio has qualified for the state meet in any sport. King’s #2 man T K Revis had been sick all week then Josh Lopez and Ben Haby got out slow and had trouble moving up on the tight course.  According to King Coach Tom Castillo, “Del Rio was really focused.  I could see it when they were warming up.”

SO#2/US#20 Flower Mound TX - won a tight 64-65 battle over previously ranked Southlake Carroll TX at Region I-5A.  Flower Mound averaged 16:17 in windy, hilly conditions for the 3 mile course. El Paso Socorro TX captured 3rd with 110 points while SO#9 Marcus TX ended up 4th with 136 points.  Southlake Carroll soph Colby Lowe remained unbeaten with a 15:39.  As usual he pushed the early pace to open a gap on the field and cruised in for the win.  Flower Mound sr J.B. Lagos was runner-up in 15:44 followed by Bosworth sr Jared McNeil in 15:45 and Arlington sr Matt Daniels in 15:48.  Southlake Carroll Coach Robert Ondrasek felt this was his team’s best effort of the season and Chris Moore ran very well ending up as the #2 man.

SO#4 Cinco Ranch TX - dominated Region III-5A scoring 28 points with a 16:15 average for 5000m.  Led by individual champ jr Kyle Goldsmith in 15:44 and runner-up sr Joe Sauvageau in 15:55 the Mustangs placed 5 in the top 13.  Kyle Goldsmith stated, “Hot weather doesn’t really affect me. We’re looking forward to State, gonna get plenty of rest and have our best race there.”Previously ranked and perennial power Kingwood was 2nd with 90 points ahead of local rival Humble with 109 for the bronze.  Cy Falls soph Blake Shaw was a surprising 3rd in 16:04. Cinco Ranch Coach Gary Derks said, “It was hot and windy, but everyone had to run in the same conditions.  We just wanted to survive. Next week is the one where we have to run our best.”

SO#5 A&M Consolidated TX - led by individual champ jr Duncan Phillips in 15:28, took team honors with 59 points and averaged 16:12 for 3 miles at Region II-5A.  SO#6 The Woodlands TX earned silver with 67 and a 16:17 average with sr Daniel Gerber grabbing the runner-up spot in 15:33.  SO#3 Cedar Park TX was 3rd with 99 points.  SO#8 Lake Highlands was a non-qualifying 7th despite a fine showing by sr Habben Berhane in 3rd with a 15:35 - his 1st loss this season.  The Woodlands Coach Dan Green commented, “Well the bad news is that our 12 year streak of Regional titles has come to an end, but the good news is that we will make our 26th consecutive trip to the State Championship.  If we run to our potential I truly believe we can be as competitive as anyone.”

SO#10 Tupelo MS - captured its 5th straight State title and 12th overall with 22 points.  Led by individual runner-up soph Rob Ellis in 16:34, Tupelo placed 7 in the top 10 and averaged 16:58 with a 41 second 1-5 spread.  The future is bright as only #2 and #7 graduate.  Madison Central sr Daniel Simpkins topped the field for the 2nd consecutive year in 16:04 (31 second improvement).  Simpkins’ win boosted his squad to team silver with 66 points and a 17:38 average.

Rogers AR - the 3-time defending 5A state champ, captured its 13th team crown with 48 points, 5 in the top 15 and averaged 17:11 over 5000m.  Fayetteville AR, the state #1 ranked pre-meet favorite, scored 71 for the silver.  Van Buren AR was 3rd with 191 in a very tight battle as 3rd-9th places were all within 20 points.  Lake Hamilton AR sr Alex Bearden took individual honors in 16:27 followed by Conway AR sr Raven Fuller in 16:35.  Rogers soph Aaron Hamilton took the bronze in 16:39.

Boerne TX - (state ranked #2 in 4A) won the Region IV-4A meet 70-78 over Lockhart TX (state ranked #3).  Vista Ridge jr Travis Fort (Foot Locker South #5 returner) was the individual titlist in 16:30 which was the fastest time of the day.

Horizon TX - took the team title at Region I-4A with 79 points.  State #1 ranked in 4A Ft Worth Northside won the silver with 97 led by individual champ Armando Saldivar in 15:52.

Saltillo MS - was 50-60 winner over Pearl MS in the 4A state meet.  Pearl had taken 6 titles in a row.  Saltillo sr Seth Covington and his brother soph Zach Covington finished 1-2 followed by defending champ Pearl sr Tyler Wade

Girls

SO#1/US#8 Southlake Carroll TX - captured the Region I-5A title with 41 points.  The Dragons placed 6 in the top 17 and averaged 11:57 on the hilly 2 mile course.  SO#5 Marcus TX took the silver with 78 points followed by SO#6 Keller TX with 142 points for the bronze.  Keller sr Carlene Mayfield, a Foot Locker finalist, beat a great field running 11:08 ahead of Montwood sr Christina Munoz in 11:18.  Southlake Carroll senior teammates and Foot Locker finalists Brooke Upshaw and Miranda Walker finished next in 11:33 and 11:42 with Keller soph Laleh Mojtabaeezamani rounding out the top 5 in 11:45.

SO#2/US#12 Kingwood TX - struck gold ar Region III-5A by scoring 35 with 6 in the top 14.  Kingwood averaged 11:34 for the 3200m course with a 41 second 1-5 spread.  Kingwood coach John Barr commented, “I don’t worry about mile splits.  We focus on our 2-5 and 2-7 gap knowing that our #1 (Dannielle Selner) will get some separation.  Last week our 2-7 was over 30 seconds and today it was around 20.”  SO#4 Cinco Ranch TX took silver with 84 points followed by SO#9 Clear Lake TX with 120.  Westfield soph Britney Green (2:11.40 for state 800 3rd as a frosh) won the individual title.  Her teammate Westfield jr Nichole Jones (state champ in 2003, 4:49/10:32 track PRs) came in undefeated and was in command after a 5:04 1st mile.  Jones led by about 10 seconds with 200m to go with Green and Kingwood sr Danielle Selner (NTN 36th, 4:54/10:36 track PRs) battling for 2nd.  Green started to move away from Selner at this point as up front Jones was beginning to weaken in the 85 degree heat.  Green caught Jones near the finish to record an 11:01 to 11:04 victory.  Selner followed in 11:08 for 3rd. Britney Green said, “It hurt fighting with Danielle Selner and I never planned for this to happen (beating favored teammate Jones).  Last year I dropped out at this meet.”  Danielle Selner added, “Tried some new things today (faster 1st mile to stay closer to Jones), but it didn’t work out very well.  So I’ll adjust for state, I had something left today”

SO#3/US#19 The Woodlands TX - was a decisive winner with 53 points and 4 in the top 11 at Region II-5A.  Unranked Belton TX was 2nd with 112 points followed by SO#8 Cedar Park TX with 133.  Richardson jr Jillian Rosen, previously known for a 2:14 800m, took individual honors with a 11:30 effort in only her 4th cross country meet ever.  The Woodlands sr Cheryl Spring was the closest pursuer in 11:35 ahead of teammate jr Adrienne DiRaddo in 11:38.  Cedar Park sr Katie Weise was next in 11:51 for 4th.

SO#7 Tupelo MS - struck gold at the State 5A meet for the 5th straight year and equaled their 2004 perfect score of 15.  Tupelo jr Claire Corban won the individual crown in 15:06 for 4K as they packed 7 in the top 8 with 56 second 1-5 spread and a 15:43 average.  Ocean Springs was 2nd with 79 points edging Madison Central on a tie-breaker.

SO#10 Ruston LA - was off this week after scoring a perfect 15 points at the Simsboro Invite last week.

Canyon TX - (state #1 ranked in 3A) won Region I-3A with 36 points and a 12:15 average which was the 2nd best of the day behind 5A champ Southlake Carroll.  State ranked #3 Decatur was 2nd with 75.  Canyon jr Lauren Simpson, a 2-time state 800m champ, topped the field in 11:43.

Rogers AR - won the State 5A team trophy with 36 points and a 21:07 average for 5000m.  Rogers placed 5 in the top 12 on its way to victory over Fayetteville AR with 75.  Favored state #1 Bentonville AR ended up 3rd with 88.  Bentonville fr Katie Dalton led the field in 19:53 followed by Rogers fr Courtney Efurd in 20:40.  The hot and windy weather took its toll on this race as the lead pack of five at 2 miles included Bentonville twins Alyssa and Brittany Potter and Rogers’ Rachel Conley who all ended up dropping out.

Pearl MS - averaged 16:36 to defend its state 4A title 31-68 over Saltillo MS.  Pass Christian MS 8th grader Cory McGee posted a 14:53 for the win in the fastest time of the day.
