Preview - Top 10 Scoreboard

Soph Emily Crow leads Tupelo girls to perfect 15 in Mississippi state meet, their fourth straight title. Rogers and Bentonville win Arkansas 5A titles. Texas is ready for state meet after finishing regionals.

Mississippi held its state meet on Saturday. In 5A girls South #7 Tupelo won its 4th straight team championship with a perfect score of 15 and Tupelo soph Emily Crow successfully defended her individual title. In 5A boys Tupelo was also victorious for the 4th straight year while Madison Central jr Daniel Simpkins took the individual title. Pearl was the 4A team champ for boys and girls.

Arkansas held its state meet on Saturday. In 5A boys Rogers took the team title while Van Buren sr Aaron Batey was the individual champ. In 5A girls Bentonville captured the team championship and Jonesboro jr Leigh Ann Moore won the individual title.

Texas had its four Regions meets with the top 3 teams and top 10 individuals advancing to next Saturday’s State meet in class 1A – 5A.

#1 The Woodlands TX, #3 Cedar Park TX and #8 A&M Consolidated College Station TX
met at the Region II-5A meet in Arlington. The Woodlands was an easy winner with 27 points, 5 in the top 12, and was led by Region champ sr Daniel Lanzillotti. A&M Consolidated was 2nd with 72 followed by Georgetown with 115 and Cedar Park a non-advancing 4th with 130.

#2 Flower Mound TX, #6 Marcus Flower Mound TX and #7 Carroll Southlake TX
raced at Region I-5A in Lubbock. In a reversal of earlier Nike South results Carroll won the team title with 92, Marcus was 2nd with 111 and Flower Mound took the 3rd and final state qualifying spot with 138. Plano sr Scott MacPherson, defending state champ and #2 Ntl Foot Locker returner, was an easy winner in 14:47 over state #2 returner Odessa sr Alex Escontrias in 15:13. State #3 returner Coppell soph Taylor Ray, 9th as a freshman, did not advance after finishing out of the top 10.

were at Region III-5A in Houston. This was a very tight battle with Kingwood prevailing 90-92. Kingwood’s team went out conservatively and finished well including individual champ sr Ryan Halleck in 15:41. Third place team Humble actually had 4 in before the other teams.

#1 Kingwood TX and #8 Cinco Ranch Katy TX
were at Region III-5A in Houston. Kingwood was the class of the field with 6 of the top 11 and a total of 23 points. Cinco Ranch was runner-up with 91. Defending state champ Westfield soph Nichole Jones captured the individual crown and looked strong with a move at the mile mark on her way to 10:54.

met at Region I-5A in Lubbock. Carroll took 1st with 61 followed by Marcus with 91 and unranked Keller with 106. Lewisville was a non-advancing 4th with 114. Foot Locker finalist Plano West sr Erin Bedell looked very good with a 10:49 victory over last year’s state runner-up Carroll jr Miranda Walker in 11:03.

#4 Highland Park Dallas TX ran in Arlington also but in the Region II-4A for slightly smaller schools. They were easy winners with 35 points.

Preview

The Arkansas state meet is this Saturday. The course is on the infield of the Oaklawn Park horse track in the heart of Hot Springs, Arkansas and is moderately hilly.

In 5A the contending boys teams include defending state champs and Coaches poll #1 Rogers, #2 Fayetteville (3rd last year), #3 Russellville, #4 Van Buren and #5 Lake Hamilton. Individual boys favorites include Rogers sr Michael McCullough, Conway jr Raven Fuller, Van Buren sr Aaron Batey, Bryant soph Ethan Blakely and Fayetteville freshman Aaron Hamilton. The 5A girls field includes Coaches poll #1 Bryant, #2 Bentonville (2nd last year), #3 Rogers (defending champs have been battling injuries and illness), #4 Mount St. Mary's and #5 Springdale (3rd last year). Leading individuals include Mount St. Mary's sr Ashley Williams (defending state champ), Jonesboro jr Leigh Ann Moore (2nd last year) and Bryant's Brooke Higgs & Nicole Darland. In 4A the top boys team is Coaches poll #1 Greene County Tech (2nd last year) while state champ Quincy Googe of Fair looks to defend. Girls 4A Coaches poll #1 Harrison (defending champ) is led by Kim Peek and Tia Young. In 3A the top boys team is Coaches poll #1 Heber Springs (2nd last year) led by defending state champ Josh Bruno who will be tested by John Lagunas of DeQueen. Girls 3A Coaches poll #1 is Pulaski Academy. In 1-2A Little Rock Lutheran is the Coaches poll #1 and defending champ for boys and girls while Carlisle freshman Emily Carpenter may be the fastest girl in the state.

The Mississippi state meet will be held at Mississippi College in Clinton. In 5A girls South #7 Tupelo is again favored to win its 4th straight team title and should score very low. They’re led by soph Emily Crow (state champ, #25 Foot Locker South returner), soph Claire Corban, and frosh Caitlin Marlin (6th last year). In 5A boys Tupelo is favored to win its 4th straight team title. They’re led by jr Alex Brown (10th last year), jr Will Stewart (11th last year) and Drew Kellum. The individual race could be a battle between Madison Central jr Daniel Simpkins (2nd last year) and Ocean Springs jr Cameron Vincent (3rd). In 4A boys Pearl is a heavy favorite to win a 6th straight title. They’re led by top state returner jr Tyler Wade and teammates who will duke it out with Saltillo’s Seth and Zach Covington. The 4A girls contenders include Pearl and Saltillo.

Louisiana schools are running District meets this week.

Texas has its four Regions meets with the top 3 teams and top 10 individuals advancing to next Saturday’s State meet in class 1A – 5A.
