SO#1 US#2 The Woodlands TX boys dominate host SO#2 Kingwood in Andy Wells Invitational. Unranked Highland Park TX girls beat two ranked teams at Marcus I Invitational. SO#8 Marcus TX boys win own invitational.

Boys

South #1 & US #2 The Woodlands TX and South #2 Kingwood TX met at the Andy Wells (Kingwood) Invite. The Woodlands dominated with 16 points. Only Friendswood sr Jeremy Ellis in 5th broke up the perfect score. Kingwood’s top 2 returners from last year went 7-8 to lead them to 2nd place with 64. Their #3 returner has decided not to run this year. The course is on the Kingwood campus and the conditions were cloudy (good) but mushy ground and very humid (bad). Kyle Miller, 2003 National Foot Locker finalist, won in 15:27 last year. The Woodlands travels to Montgomery next week while Kingwood will be at the big Texas A&M Invite in 2 weeks.

#3 Cedar Park TX won its home invite with 25 points (1,4,5,7,8) over 3 solid teams. Very tight pack with 1-5 split of 6 seconds over 2 miles last week & 30 seconds over 5K this week. They will be running at the Zilker Park Invite next week. Big challenge ahead on Sept 25 at the new Nike South Invite vs. host The Woodlands, Carroll (Southlake) plus other ranked teams.

#4 PSJA North TX was 2nd at Edinburg North this week behind unranked Edinburgh North. PSJA North was without their top man Juan Jose Hernandez (Sr, #7 state returner) who should return from an injury soon. This team is known for coming on strong late in the season with the latest example being their 3rd at state last year.

#5 Carroll (Southlake) TX & #8 Marcus (Flower Mound) TX led the entries at the Marcus I Invite. This meet is usually the top meet in the Dallas area. Marcus won with 76 points over a strong field including #5 Carroll. Nolan Catholic was 2nd with 135. Carroll was only 8th, but was not at full strength. Orey Smith (Sr, 9:23 PR) was held out this week with some leg soreness and freshman Colby Lowe won the JV race in a time that would have placed 8th in Varsity. Carroll is off next week and then has a strong test at Texas A&M on the 18 th where they plan to run their best 7. Both Marcus and Carroll will be at the Nike South meet on Sept 25.

#6 Rogers AR hasn’t run a meet yet. They open in Carthage Missouri next week.

#7 Jenks OK ran the Hurricane Invite at U of Tulsa. This is a race by grade over 2 miles. They went 1-2-3 in the Senior race and 2-3-4-5 in the Junior race.

#9 Cinco Ranch TX won the Cougar Classic at the U of Houston. This is a race by grade over 2 miles. After combining the race results for overall scoring they won with 52 points over a very competitive Mayde Creek squad with 70. Cinco was led by soph Kyle Goldsmith who won his grade race with Cinco’s fastest time of the day.

Girls

South #1 & US #5 Carroll (Southlake) TX & #3 Marcus (Flower Mound) TX ran at the Marcus I Invite. In a tight battle 4A powerhouse Highland Park won with 63 followed by Carroll with 63 also & Marcus with 66. This is the 2nd strong performance in a row from Highland Park whose strong pack overcame the 1-2 finish by Carroll. Carroll didn’t run Brittney Alberto (Sr, 2:16/5:03, state 11th, #9 state & #12 Foot Locker South returner). Marcus didn’t run Tara Gruber (Sr, state 16th, #13 state & #29 Foot Locker South returner) who is back training after an injury. Carroll is off next week and then has a strong test at Texas A&M on the 18th where they plan to be at full strength. Marcus and Carroll will be at the Nike South meet on Sept 25. Both Texas A&M and Nike South will be 5K which is longer than the normal 3200 for Texas girls.

#2 Kingwood TX, #7 Klein TX & #8 The Woodlands TX met at the Andy Wells (Kingwood) Invite. Kingwood took the trophy with 33 pts followed by The Woodlands with 53 & Klein with 90. Kingwood was led by freshman Megan Munoz in 3rd who is the sister of former standout Matt Munoz, 5th at state in 2002. Cheryl Spring of The Woodlands won her 2nd straight individual title by holding off a closing Kelcee Keenan from Klein. Kingwood will be at the Texas A&M meet and Nike South along with The Woodlands. Klein faces a good field at Brenham next week.

#4 Tupelo MS hasn’t raced yet. They travel out-of-state to the Mobile (AL) Cross Country Challenge next week to face several good teams from the Southeast.

#6 Cedar Park TX & #10 Georgetown TX raced at the Cedar Park Invite. Cedar Park finished 2-3-4 and won 30 to 85 over Georgetown. Cedar Park will be tested over 5K (TX girls run 3200m) at Texas A&M vs #1 Carroll on Sept 18 and at Nike South.

#9 Rogers AR hasn’t raced yet. Opens next week in Carthage, Missouri.
