STRONG PERFORMANCES AND FALLEN RECORDS HIGHLIGHT
ALABAMA STATE OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Arthur L. Mack

OAK MOUNTAIN, AL, May 4-6--They'll talk for months about what went down at the Alabama State Track and Field Championships at the Oak Mountain Sportsplex.
Competiton was keen dring the three-day event, as numerous records were broken in all six divisions. Even with events that produced no records, there were strong performances that raised eyebrows among veteran track and field observers.
Mike Byrnes of the National Scholastic Sports Foundation and Jim Spier were at the meet, and were amazed at what they witnessed.
"All in all, it was a good meet," said Byrnes.
"You got a real break with the weather," said Spier regarding the performances ."It couldn't be more perfect. "There was no wind, temperature was in the high 70s."
"There are at least two young ladies (Tarrant's LeKeisha Williams and Tuscaloosa Northridge's Laquinta Aaron) who are definitely Division I prospects," said Byrnes. "They'll get picked up by someone that knows what they're doing, and they'll be stars."

Here's a recap of what happened:

6A
Opelika's Clayton throws one out of the park as Bulldogs win boys crown;  Hoover's sprinters and jumpers too much for Mountain Brook and Smiths Station.

By far the biggest topic of the 6A state competition was Opelika's Zach Clayton's state meet record 202-8 toss in the discus.
The throw broke the national top five, and was one of the big reasons Opelika defeated Mountain Brook 82-79 to win the 6A boys' title. During warmups, Clayton's throws were landing not only beyond the sector, but onto the track.
One of Clayton's throws landed on the track during the 4A boys' 3200-meter run, as as a result, further running events were delayed until the discus competition ended. Several members of the news media were amazed at the length of Clayton's throws, and hung around in hopes of talking with him afterwards.
"Anytime a discus thrower endangers the track, that means you got a good thrower," said Spier.
Clayton also won the shot (59-10 3/4), and Opelika ran a smooth 41.74 in the 4 X 100 and got points in several other events to win the title. But there were other exciting performances.
One was in the 4 X 800, where four teams--Smiths Station, Mountain Brook, Hoover, and Vestavia Hills---ran under eight minutes. Smiths Station, with Chris Bilbrew's 1:52 anchor leg, won in 7:52.48, with Mountain Brook second in 7:53.28. Hoover was third in 7:53.60, while Vestavia Hills was fourth in 7:57.83.
Bilbrew came back on the second day to win the open 800 in 1:53.85, and was third in the 400 (48.84).
Another was in the 200, where Mobile LeFlore's Brandon Spradley was going for a double after winning the 400 in 48.08. But he was edged out by another Mobile-area athlete--Alma Bryant freshman Antwan Broughton--who won in 21.58--not far off the national freshman record.
"For a ninth-grader to come within .79 of the national freshman record is pretty good, especially when he (Broughton) finished only third in his county meet," said Byrnes. "Here's a kid who rose to the occasion, and if he keeps doing this, he's going to go a long way."
Luke Gaines of Bob Jones won the javelin with a state-meet record 182-2, while Foley's Julio Jones won the long jump (22-11) and triple jump (47-5)
In the 6A girls' division, Hoover's terrific trio of Kirsten Richards, Ashley May and Kyndal Fancher led the Lady Bucs to a 116-85 win over archrival Mountain Brook. Richards won the 400 in 56.13 and triple jump (38-1 3/4), and got a third in the long jump (18-4 1/2); May was second in the triple jump (37-11 1/2) and long jump (18-6); and Fancher won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles (14.60/44.03).
Vestavia Hills' Lauren Pritchard was a double winner, outdueling Decatur Austin's Jennifer Dunn in the 1600 and 3200 with solid times of 5:03.64 and 10:52.01. Dunn was no slouch either, running 5:05.72 and 10:59.02.
There were several outstanding efforts in the relays as well. Foley clocked 48.55 in the 4 X 100, Mountain Brook broke the state meet record in the 4 X 800 with a time of 9:26.44, with Oak Mountain second in 9:33.85.
And in the 4 X 400, three teams--Smiths Station, Hoover, and Mountain Brook--amazingly finished within .88 of each other. Smiths Station went 3:56.09, Hoover 3:56.13, and Mountain Brook 3:56.97.

Johnston, Gilmer leads St. Paul's charge in 5A girls and boys championships

Conventional wisdom said that Tuscaloosa Northridge's girls and Homewood's boys would be the odds-on favorites to win the 5A titles.
What neither team figured on was St. Paul's balance on its girls and boys' squads--not to mention, in Homewood's case--a little bit of bad luck, as St. Paul's defeated Northridge 149-112 to take the girls' crown, while the St. Paul's boys outlasted Homewood 101.50 to 83.50..
Northridge's Laquinta Aaron wowed the Oak Mountain Sportsplex crowd with a triple win in the sprints---12.15 in the 100, 24.25 in the 200, and a record-setting 55.16 in the 400---but she was upstaged by St. Paul's Mary Carleton Johnston, who not only led a 1-2-3 finish enroute to a record-setting run in the 1600 (5:05.79), but ran a leg on the record-breaking 4 X 800 (9:37.44).
To add to the Lady Jaguars' misery, Johnston came back in day two of the meet to win the 3200 in 11:08.19, and finished second in the 800 (2:19.2:19.49) as part of yet another St. Paul's sweep.
Neal Tisher added a record-breaking 11-6 effort in the pole vault, and Meghan Austin threw a new personal best 126-5 to break her state record in the javelin a day after finshing second to teammate Angelica Howard in the shot put.
"We always relied on the distances," said St. Paul's coach Jim Tate after the girls' win. "But this year, we had a strong supporting cast."
Lee Gilmer's solid second place finish in the 1600 (4:29.17) behind Huntsville's Cody Hood (4:26.55), set the tone for the St. Paul's boys, as Gilmer's strong anchor leg gave the Saints a big win in the 4 X 800 meter relay (8:24.55).
Homewood hoped to make up ground on St. Paul's in day two of the meet with sprinter Ladarius Woods, who was also a part of the Patriots' 4 X 100 meter relay team. But disaster struck as Woods pulled up lame in the 4 X 100 relay finals, and Homewood's hopes of winning the outdoor title went down the drain.
St. Paul's took advantage of Homewood's misfortune by piling up points in every way imaginable. A big win by Louis Watson in the 400 (48.82), plus Gilmer's second-place finish in the 3200 (9:53.52) gave the Saints some needed breathing room, and strong performances in several field events clinched the win.

UMS-Wright girls and boys go out of 4A competition with a bang

Mobile's UMS-Wright makes the jump to level 5A next season, and the Bulldog girls and boys made it a state meet to remember as they jumped on their opponents and never let up enroute to big wins in the 4A championships.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated Guntersville 153-120, while Tarrant was third with 55 points and Beauregard fourth with 39. UMS-Wright's boys, meanwhile, ripped Guntersville 176.50 to 71, with Beauregard third with 55 and Fayette County fourth with 41.
UMS-Wright's boys won their ninth title in the last 10 years, while the girls won their seventh in a row.
"I told the team that the state meet is where you have to put everything together," said UMS-Wright coach Pat Galle. "We wanted to go out dominating 4A, and we've dominated it since we've been in it."
Twins Sarah and Leigh Gilmore paced UMS-Wright, as they accumulated four new state meet records between them. Individually, Sarah set records in the 1600 (5:16.15) and 3200 (11:39.86), and Leigh won the 800 in a meet-record 2:18.53.
Both also ran on the record setting 4 X 800 meter relay team, which ran 10:08.01. Sarah also added a fourth-place finish in the 800, while Leigh was also under the old record in the 1600 (5:20.74).
"Sarah had a great meet, and to show you how competitive she is, she was upset because we didn't go 1-2-3 in the 800 and felt she let the team down," said Galle. "But that's how she and her sister are. They'll run each other into the dirt trying to get something."
The UMS-Wright boys were even more dominating, winning four events on the meet's final day to cruise to the win.
Notable performers for the Bulldogs were John Robert Taylor, who had two big wins in the 1600 (4:36.58) and 3200 (10:30.04), and a third place finish in the 800 (2:03.48); Brandon Gibson won the long jump (21-4 1/2) and triple jump (48-4 3/4), and ran a leg of the winning 4 X 400 meter relay (3:30.84) along with Hayes Harris, who won the 400 (51.52) and ran a leg on the winning 4 X 100 meter relay team, which ran 43.48.
Other big winners for UMS-Wright were Rashad Bumpers in the 100 (11.11), and Preston Dial in the javelin, with a state meet-record 163-10.                    While UMS-Wright was tearing it up in team competition, Tarrant's LaKeisha Williams was a one-girl show in the sprints, winning the 100 (12.26), 200 (25.27) and the 400 (55.91). The 400-meter time was a new state meet record. Dakota Matthews of East Lawrence dominated the boys' hurdle events, winning the 110-meter highs (15.83) and the 300 intermediates (40.96).

3A
Rose and Baker's multiple wins not enough to overcome Montgomery Academy's girls; Gomez's quadruple wins key T.R. Miller boys' win.

Leeds High's Bridgett Rose and Tiphanie Baker scored 76 points between them, but it was Montgomery Academy's girls who had the final say as the Lady Eagles defeated Leeds 124-101 to take top honors in 3A girls.
Rose was victorious in the 100 meters (12.53), 200 (25.73), 100-meter hurdles (14.96) and long jump (17-3 1/2), while Baker won the shot (38-4), discus (121-4 3/4) and the javelin (132-00). In addition, Baker also added a third place in the high jump
But it was not quite enough as Montgomery Academy's distance crew, led by the Wool sisters, Caroline and Sarah, had more than enough in the tank to outlast the Lady Green Wave.
Caroline, in fact, scored a triple of her own, taking the 800 (2:23.34); 1600 (5:25.71), and 3200 (11:56.37) as the Lady Eagles swept the latter two events as well as winning the 4 X 800 meter relay (10:22.74)
Rogers was third with 77 while Sheffield was fourth with 53.50.
On the 3A boys' side, Antonio Gomez of Brewton's T.R. Miller was the big star, scoring 40 points in winning the long jump (22-8), 110-meter high hurdles (15.42), 300-meter hurdles (in a meet-record 39.65) and the triple jump (43-7).
The Tigers defeated Sheffield 99.50 to 63.50, while Montgomery Academy was third with 58 points and Rogers fourth with 51.
Montgomery Academy scored 58 points to grab the day one lead in the girls' competition, as the 1-2-3 finish in the 1600 gave it 24 quick points. Sarah Wool ran 5:26.95 for second and Magie Rickard ran 5:26.97 to help Caroline Wool complete the sweep. The Lady Eagles also swept the pole vault.
But Baker helped her teammates close the gap with the wins in the shot and discus. Although Rose easily won the 100 and 200 to make it an interesting battle, a lack of depth and another sweep by Montgomery Academy--this time in the 3200---was too much for the Lady Green Wave to overcome.
Gomez was clearly the star of the 4A competition as he throughly dominated his events. Showing no effects of a knee injury he suffered two years ago, he was able to cruise to victory in his record-setting 300-meter hurdle race. The Tigers were pretty much in the driver's seat after that.
"He worked hard after the injury," said Gomez's coach, Eddie Brundige. "Words can't describe how I feel about him, because he had a super year."

Altamont sweeps 2A girls and boys competition as Molen scores distance triple of 2:21.49, 5:02.14, 10:47.76 triple.

It was a great day for Altamont's Elisabeth Molen, as she accounted for three new records as Altamont's Lady Knights walloped Falkville 164-87.
Molen set records in the 1600 meters (5:02.14) and 3200 (10:47.67) and also ran a leg on the victorious 4 X 800 meter relay team, which set yet another record in 10:12.94. For good measure, she tacked on a win in the 800, running 2:21.49.
Altamont took a 35-19 lead over Spanish Fort in day one of the girls' competition, thanks in part to Molen's win in the 1600--a race where she ran virtually by herself. The Lady Knights finished 1-4-5 in that event and got 19 big points.
Molen took up where she left off in day two, blazing to victory in the 3200 meter run, and held off Spanish Fort's Anna Jarman to win the 800. In addition to winning the 4 X 800, Altamont also swept the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400.
"She (Molen) impressed me winning the 800, 1600 and 3200, and all of them in pretty good times," said Byrnes.
Altamont's boys withstood a strong double win by Falkville's Shane Edge in the 400 (50.65) and 800 (2:03.48) to hold off the Blue Devils 135-108.  Altamont led Falkville 41-18 in day one of the competition after Bud Sauer won the 1600 in 4:42.73), and Louis Dale and Kory Hayes were 1-3 in the triple jump (45-4, 42-4).
Dale was also second in the high jump (6-2), while Hayes won both the 110 and 300 hurdles in day two.(14.99/40.65).
Falkville won the 4 X 800 in a state meet-record 8:22.56, and got a blazing anchor leg from Edge to win the 4 X 400 (3:31.23), but the Knights had just enough cushion to take the team title.

Hazelwood edges American Christian girls; Alabama School for Deaf hangs on to beat St. Judes in boys division

Hazelwood won six events as it defeated American Christian 121-118 to take the 1A girls' crown, while Cedar Bluff was third with 80.
Jasmine Patton was a triple winner for Hazelwood, following up a state-meet record of 14.87 in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries with a 15.16 win in the finals, a 48.29 win in the 300 meter hurdles, and a 35-5 1/2 effort in the triple jump for yet another win.
Amercian Christian's Rachel Mills scored a double victory in the 1600 (5:42.68) and 3200 (12:33.59) to pace American Christian, and added a second in the 800 (2:33.14).
On the boys' side, Alabama School for the Deaf defeated St. Jude's 129-100. ASD's Silent Warriors scored in the top three in 11 events to stay ahead of St. Jude's, which got wins from Jason Crawford in the 400 (51.70), 800 (2:08.36) and 1600 (4:50.54).
Terrell Irons of Cedar Bluff was also a double winner, winning the long jump (20-10 1/2) and the triple jump (42-11).
