BOYS

1. Jefferson S&T, Alexandria VA – Matt Ryan’s defending state 3A champions, who return 4 of their top 5 and have a deep pool of talented to runners to draw from, opened with a convincing win at the Monroe Parker Invitational. Even without projected #2 Brian Landry – held out while he returns from some knee problems but expected to race this weekend – the Colonials ran a tight 1-7. “Things went as we had planned,” Ryan said. “We took a conservative approach with our race tactics. It was much hotter than last year.”

2. Holy Trinity, Melbourne FL – Doug Butler’s Tigers, the defending state 1A champs, return 4 of their top 5 and get a big boost from junior transfer Nate Taylor, formerly of Palm Bay FL. Sophomore Kyle Cooke has looked the best early, finishing first for HTA in the preseason Wickham Jamboree and picking up the overall win in the season-opening Lake Brantley Open, won by Holy Trinity ahead of 4A power Lyman FL on a muddy and slow course at Altamonte Springs. Joiner and Taylor were sluggish at Lake Brantley after a tough week of training, but Butler expects them to be running up with Cooke – crucial if Holy Trinity is to thrive at the FSU Invitational, Great American and the flrunners.com Invitational over the next three weekends.

3.Brentsville District, Nokesville VA – The 2004 state 2A champions lost state champ Pat Eggleston to Virginia Military Institute, but Rob Dulin’s Tigers remain strong at the top. Depth is an issue, however, and Dulin ended August with injury concerns at 4-6, all reflected in a season-opening second-place finish behind unranked Oakton VA in the Great Meadows Invitational. Dulin rated the performance as “fair,” adding that the 4-6 runners are finally healthy. “I was pleased with their progression,” he said. “Over the next few weeks, we should be able to close the gap from 3 to 4.”

9/10 – Great Meadows Invitational, 5K, The Plains, VA

4. Smiths Station AL – The 2004 state 6A runner-up has everyone back and features eight runners who have dipped under 17:00 for 5K. But the Panthers stumbled out of the gate, finishing behind unranked Roberson NC and just edging out an unranked and relatively depleted Walton GA in the Eye Opener invitational on Sept. 3. “Awful,” was how Smiths Station Coach Ron Peters summed up the day. “We did not run near expectations [but] luckily we are still healthy and getting focused for our next race on Sept. 17 th” – the Panther Invitational at Smiths Station.

5. Tampa-Jesuit FL – Mike Boza’s defending state 2A champions have looked sharp early, with senior James Osborne finishing first overall in the Red Mule 5K (used as a preseason team time trial) and the season-opening USF Invitational. The Tigers won easily at USF, even with usual #2 Phillip Scrivner recovering from a stomach virus and not at full strength. Osborne could challenge Flagler Palm Coast’s Justin Harbor for individual supremacy in Florida, and freshman Connor Revord, in his first season of cross country, went 16:14 at USF and is said by Boza to have a high ceiling.

6. Mountain Brook AL – Greg Echols’ Panthers, 3 rd in last year’s state 6A meet, may have a star in the making in freshman Bill Matthews, who finished 5 th in last year’s state meet as an 8 th grader. And behind him there’s track speed to burn – four runners with 800 PRs of 1:56 or better. But Echols was unsure how well his half-milers would fare in the early going of this cross-country season, and results so far have confirmed his doubts. While Matthews equaled his PR for 5K at the Clara Bowl, finishing 3 rd overall at 16:10, the team finished 4 th behind SE#10 Parkview GA, unranked Brookwood GA and SE#9 Marist GA. Matthews and Mountain Brook both won easily at the Chickasaw Trails Invitational this past weekend, but the gap from Matthews to #2 was even wider.

7. Chapel Hill NC – Ron Olsen’s Tigers, the 2004 state 4A runner-up, return their top 5 and were dominant in a season-opening win at the Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival in late August, with Foot Locker finalist Jack Bolas breaking the course record by more than 11 seconds and winning by more than 30. Bolas and senior teammates Ryan Workman and Duncan Hoge form one of the best top-3s in the country, and juniors Taylor Muir and Miles Rampel are coming on at 4 and 5. “I’m satisfied with [them] right now,” Olsen said of Muir and Rampel. “They both have to learn more regarding racing, but that’ll happen. They’re pretty tough kids – more strength than speed – kind of like Duncan in that way.” At the WNC Carnival, Chapel Hill finished way up on Carolina powers Roberson NC – which knocked off SE#4 Smiths Station a week later – and Fort Mill SC. On Sept. 10 at Durham Academy, with Bolas off on a college trip and Hoge in Japan for the World Juniors Triathlon Championship, Workman broke Bolas’s course record to pace another easy win.

8.Hoover AL – Devon Hind’s Bucs, the only team from the Southeast Region (boys or girls) in The Harrier’s final Super 25 National Team Rankings for 2004, lost their top two runners to graduation but still boast a formidable top 3. Though the rest of the team is young and unproven, a comfortable win at the 27-team Memphis Twilight Classic suggests Hoover may do its rebuilding on the fly. “I am thrilled with the way my young guys ran their races,” Hind said of freshman Pat McGregor, and sophomores Ben Willis, Justin Rogers and Joel Rogers. “They filled out our top 7 in a great way for their first big race. Our freshman, this was his first 3-miler; he went out and hung tough. These four guys will steadily improve – they’re hungry.”

9. Marist, Atlanta GA – Seniors Iain Turnbull, Jack Bourbonnais and John Whitcomb give the defending state 4A champs one of the region’s most talented threesomes, but a second-place finish to unranked Brookwood GA in the season-opening Early Bird Invitational – despite a 1-2-4 finish up front – illustrates the problem for Marist and Coach Roy Benson. At the huge Clara Bowl a week later, Turnbull, Bourbonnais and Whitcomb went 1-5-6 yet Marist still finished 3 rd behind SE#10 Parkview GA and Brookwood again. “As you can see, we don't have the quality depth to compete with the big schools,” Benson said.

10. Parkview, Lilburn GA – The 2004 state 5A champions were hit hard by graduation, losing #1 Alex Erickson and two others to graduation. But James Tigue’s program has the depth to quickly reload, and Parkview opened with impressive victories in the Walton Stages Races and the Clara Bowl – winning the latter over perennial state power Brookwood GA, SE#9 Marist GA and SE#6 Mountain Brook AL despite missing 2 of their top 5. Lack of experience may have caught up with Parkview in their most recent meet, however, as the Panthers finished a close second behind Chiles FL in the Carrollton Invitational. “It was frustrating to see a Chiles runner one position ahead of each of our guys,” said Tigue. “They ran a better race, and they deserved to beat us. We are going to need better performances from our 5-7 runners if we are going to repeat as state champions.”

Chiles, Tallahassee FL– Flying low on the radar thanks to a 7 th-place finish in last year’s 3A state meet, Scott Gowan’s Timberwolves opened the season with a bang by knocking off a hot SE#10 Parkview GA team to win the Carrollton Invitational. Chiles has its top 7 back from last year, led by senior Jonathan Blocker. Blocker and Justin Harbor of rival Flagler Palm Coast FL were the only runners to break 16:00 on the tough Georgia state meet course in Carrollton.

Brookwood, Snellville GA – Ben Denhke’s Broncos have won eight state championships in the past 17 years but finished only 5 th in the 5A meet last year. Two early-season finishes ahead of SE#9 Marist suggest that Brookwood is back and could add to the trophy collection despite some very tough state competition. Brookwood lacks star power but has excellent depth, with a spread of less than 60 seconds for 1-10. Seniors Billy Mateker and Tim Lorek led the team to a 2 nd-place finish in the state’s biggest invitational of the season, the Clara Bowl, won by SE#10 Parkview GA.

Fort Mill SC – Scott Barefield’s Yellowjackets take aim at a first state title in school history with an experienced lineup, including 6 runners with sub-17:00 PRs for 5K. Fort Mill was no match for SE#7 Chapel Hill NC in the season-opening WNC Carnival but did stay close to a strong Roberson NC team. A lightning-fast win – #7 at 16:41 – over their home state’s best in the Coaches Classic on Sept. 10 should give Fort Mill confidence come November. Questions persist regarding the length of the new Sandhills course, however.
