Woodrow Wilson Sweeps Boys and Girls DCIAA Cross-Country Titles! by Ronald Jenkins The Wilson boys’ cross-country team felt confident that they could win their sixth title in a row as they prepared for Saturday's championship race. With five returning runners, the Tigers from Northwest D.C. had a veteran team coming into the season and they had consistently run well against the D.C. Schools. That confidence was shaken on Wednesday when junior Gary Barnes suffered a fracture in his radius bone playing basketball in the gymnasium. Gary, along with senior Nick Burant, had been trading the number one position on the team all season and the loss of Gary in the championships could be the opening that rival H.D. Woodson had been waiting for. By Saturday, Gary’s arm was in a splint, but he came to run! Seeing Gary on the line with his arm bandaged up was the inspiration that the team needed and they roared to victory, capturing six of the top eight spots. Senior Sam Jewler led the way for Wilson with a second place finish. Gary, to everyone’s surprise, came in third and senior Nick Burant, finished fourth. The individual title went to H.D. Woodson warrior, Camron Thomas. Camron is only a junior and Saturdays race showed the league that he will be a force throughout the rest of the year. Last year, the Lady Warriors captured the girls’ cross-country championship that the Woodrow Wilson girls had held for eight years. This year, Woodson and Wilson both knew that the championships were going to be a close affair. The 2005 outdoor champion Ballou Knights had a strong team led by All-American, Andria Smallwood. Smallwood had already won the individual cross-country title for two years and this year she had help. As the runners came through the first mile, the Wilson girls had four runners in the lead group and things looked good, but hopes began to fade when junior Kelly Morgan fell ill and had to drop out of the race. Seeing Kelly drop out and knowing that Wilson’s number one runner, Roxana Arce, was not running a good race was the inspiration that junior Lalanie Stevens needed to push herself to the limit and come up with a fourth place finish. Lalanie’s best finish prior to Saturday had been an eighth place finish at the DCIAA Developmental Meet. When Ballou runner, Lashawn Nobles suffered an asthma attack during the race, the Ballou girls were left with only four runners and could not figure in the championships. That left Wilson and Woodson as the teams that were battling for the title. In the end the Lady Tigers from Woodrow Wilson prevailed. Both head girls coach, Jimmy Green and newly hired distance coach Shannon Foley agreed that Saturdays victory was truly a team effort and that the race is not always decided by the first runner who crosses the finish line. On Saturday, it was the five girls from Wilson that brought the championship back to Wilson. The individual title again, this year belonged to senior, Andria Smallwood.
