1. CHAPEL HILL NC (#1)

10/29 – MIDEAST 4-A REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, SAS Soccer Park, Cary NC

SE#1 Chapel Hill cruised to a 41-point victory in its region meet, led by ace Jack Bolas’s big win over longtime state rival Sandy Roberts, as the Tigers continue to wait for #3 Duncan Hoge to return to good health. Bolas went 15:09 on the 5K layout at SAS Soccer Park, 16 seconds up on Broughton’s Roberts, who entered the weekend at #2 in the country on Steve Underwood’s early Foot Locker projection list (Bolas was #9). Five weeks earlier at Great American, on nearly the exact same course (the start/finish on Saturday was just a bit higher up the long hill), Roberts had won the Race of Champions in 15:03, with Bolas in 3rd at 15:20. “Jack and Sandy have been racing each other since middle school,” Chapel Hill Coach Ron Olsen. “They’re friendly enough until the gun goes off.” Chapel Hill #2 Ryan Workman nearly got Roberts too, finishing 3rd overall at 15:28. Miles Rampel (11th at 16:19) and Taylor Muir (19th at 16:37) delivered strong races to help compensate for the ailing Hoge, who has been under the weather to one degree or another ever since Chapel Hill’s 3rd-place finish at Great American vaulted the team to the top of the Southeast Region rankings. Hoge, normally right with Workman when healthy, was sick again just prior to Saturday’s race but still managed to gut out a 13th-place finish at 16:24. “I just told him to hold back as much as he could early on,” Olsen said, “since the hills would affect him more than usual.”

Even without Hoge at close to full strength the Tigers managed to post a top-5 average of 15:59, a 16-second improvement over their performance at Great American. Olsen said he feels “pretty good about things” heading into states. But, he added, “We’ll see how much my kids want this on the 5th.” As for how Hoge will feel by Saturday, Olsen said, “That’s up in the air.”

2. ST. XAVIER, LOUISVILLE KY (#2)

10/29 – METRO MEET OF CHAMPIONS, 5K, River Road Country Club, Louisville, KY

SE#2 St. Xavier tuned up for its region meet by beating up on some locals in the Metro Meet of Champions. Scott McClaine, Brian Long and Thomas Davis all went sub-16:00 for 5K as the Tigers went 1-2-3-4-6 in the 6-team field. St. Xavier’s top 5 averaged 16:02 on the gently rolling layout and spread 1:09, but the depth on display was even more impressive – 8 runners under 17:00 and 6 more under 17:50. “We are feeling great about our team at this point,” said Xavier Coach Chuck Medley, who, to keep the team in good position for a peak at NTN if selected, plans to implement only a modified taper heading into regions and states. “But if we don’t win our state meet all that you and I have talked about so far this year will be moot,” Medley added.

4. OAKTON, VIENNA VA (#4)
9. HERNDON VA (#9)

10/27 – CONCORDE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS, Burke Lake 2.98 Mile Course, Burke Lake VA

SE#4 Oakton firmly established itself as the early favorite to win the Virginia 3A meet with a 22-point win over SE#9 Herndon in the talent-rich Concorde District meet. Senior James Phillips, who finished 3rd overall at 15:09 on the quick 2.98-mile Burke Lake layout, led an Oakton top 5 that averaged 15:35 and spread 46 seconds. The performance closely matched what Oakton did in its breakout win at Eastern States on Oct. 15 (13:22 average with 47-second spread on the 2.5-mile course at Van Cortlandt Park). In last year’s district meet, also held at Burke Lake, eventual state champion Jefferson VA won with an average of 15:45 (Jefferson subsequently moved to the Liberty District).

SE#9 Herndon was paced by overall winner Abe Daganchew, a talented junior who got the better of Oakton’s Phillips and Chantilly senior Brad Siragusa (3rd and 2nd, respectively, both at 15:09) with a personal-best 15:07. Junior Ermin Mujexinovic finished 5th overall at 15:24, but Oakton had its top 5 in the chute before Herndon #3 Matt Girogis (10th at 15:56). Still, Herndon averaged a very solid 15:49 and spread 1:15.

SE#6 Jefferson, which averaged 15:59 at Burke Lake to win the far less competitive Liberty District meet, gets to face its former district rivals in Thursday’s Northern Region meet at Burke Lake.

5. BRENTSVILLE DISTRICT, NOKESVILLE VA (#5)

10/27 – NORTHWESTERN DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Great Meadows (non-state) Course, The Plains VA

Brentsville swept the boys and girls district titles with what Coach Rob Dulin called “definitely our strongest race this season.” Senior Nick Gehlsen and junior Adam Henken led the SE#5 Brentsville boys with a 1-2 finish at 15:46 and 15:52 on the 5K layout at Great Meadows. Even without usual #5 Eric Ekholm, sidelined by a hip flexor strain but expected to race at regionals on Thursday, the Tigers averaged an impressive 16:07 and spread 1:05. Brentsville, the defending state 2A champions, won this meet last year (on the same course) with an average of 16:38.

6. JEFFERSON S&T, ALEXANDRIA VA (#6)

10/27 – LIBERTY DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS, Burke Lake 2.98 Mile Course, Burke Lake VA

SE#6 Jefferson made itself right at home in its new district, dominating the Liberty District meet at Burke Lake despite competing without #1 Brian Landry. Paul Norland, Richard Prevost and Hersh Singh set the table for the Colonials with a 1-2-3 finish (going 15:48, 15:50 and 15:52 for 2.98 miles). Kyle Grimsley (6th at 16:12) and Ben Treweek (7th at 16:15) rounded out a top 5 that spread 27 seconds and averaged 15:59. Landry, according to Coach Matt Ryan, was held out due to illness but should be good to go this week. Jefferson, which finished a disappointing 4th in the Eastern States meet in New York on Oct. 15, gets another shot at Eastern States winner Oakton VA in Thursday’s region meet at Burke Lake – along with SE#9 Herndon and previously ranked West Springfield. “Obviously it will be a very competitive race,” Ryan said. “We will look to run our race and post some excellent performances.”

Jeremy Moujoodi and Timothy Landry went 1-2 overall as Hoover cruised ahead of some light competition in their home invitational. Going without regular #3 Stephen Payne, due to illness, Hoover’s top 5 averaged 17:52 and spread 1:27 on the 5K layout at Hoover Running Park.

8. WALTON GA (---)

10/29 – REGION 6 AAAAA CHAMPIONSHIP, 5K, Boling Park, Canton GA

Walton lost 2004 state champion Sam Bryfczynski and three others from its top 7 at states to graduation, but Coach Tom Williams now has his Raiders back right where they were and perhaps poised to improve on last year’s runner-up finish. Junior Jay Heller won the region meet on Saturday at 15:38 for 5K, leading a top 5 that scored 28 in the 10-team field and averaged 16:23 on the quick layout at Boling Park. Last year’s senior-heavy Walton team won this meet with a score of 29 and a top-5 average of 16:27. The competition will be tough this weekend, however, as Region 8 winner Parkview and Region 7 winner Collins Hill looked similarly impressive on Saturday.

Others:

MARIST, ATLANTA GA (#7)

10/29 – REGION 6 AAAA CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Mercer University, Atlanta GA

Marist continues to struggle without ace Iain Turnbull, who’s been out sick since the middle of October, but the War Eagles had just enough on Saturday to win the Region 6 meet by 4 points over rival St. Pius. Jack Bourbonnais picked up the overall win at 17:26 for 5K, leading a Marist top 5 that averaged 18:01 and spread 1:09. Though Marist remains the favorite in the upcoming 4A meet, how well the team measures up to the big 5A programs likely will de determined by the status of their ailing #1.

MCCALLIE, CHATTANOOGA TN (---)

10/28 – TSSAA DIVISION II EAST REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS, 3 miles, Greenway Farm, Chattanooga, TN

Freshman Riley Young, at 15:37 for 3 miles, led a 1-2-3-4 finish for McCallie in its region meet. Coach Mike Wood, who guided the team to a state title in 2001, seems to have McCallie in good position to reach the top of the medal stand again this weekend. McCallie averaged 15:43 on the Greenway Farm layout, a course that tends to run 15-20 seconds slower than the state meet course in Nashville, according to Walker Valley TN coach and TennesseeRunner.com administrator Jasen Parks. Last year, Brentwood Academy won the Division II state title with a state-best average of 15:40 (McCallie was second in the D-II meet at 16:03). Tennessee state 3A champion Houston TN, which ended the 2004 season ranked #5 in the Southeast Region, averaged 15:46.

State 2A power Tampa-Jesuit started its championship-season drive with a perfect 15 in its district meet, the seventh-straight district title for the program. James Osborne went 15:31 up front for a top 5 that averaged 16:24 for 5K. The return of top-5 runners Phil Scrivner and Mike Atkins to the lineup – both had been sidelined by injuries – bodes well for a team ranked as high as #5 in the region earlier this season. “We’re almost where we want to be,” Coach Mike Boza said.

“The weather is cooling off down here,” Boza added, “and our guys are starting to feel their race legs again.”

WEST SPRINGFIELD VA (---)

10/26 – PATRIOT DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS, Burke Lake 2.98 Mile Course, Burke Lake VA

West Springfield served notice that it intends to be a factor in Thursday’s top-heavy Northern Region meet, winning the Patriot District meet with a top-5 average of 15:57 on the 2.98-mile Burke Lake layout. Junior Mike Spooner led the way with an eye-opening win at 14:58, a performance that ranks tied for 23rd on the all-time list at Burke Lake, a course that was established in 1974 (Alan Webb is #1, at 13:57). West Springfield’s top 4 went 1-3-5-6 overall, but a 39-second 4-5 gap will have to be cut down for the team to contend with SE#4 Oakton, SE#6 Jefferson and SE#9 Herndon at Burke Lake on Thursday.

PINECREST, SOUTHERN PINES NC (---)

10/29 – EAST 4-A REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, 3.05 miles, South View High School, Hope Mills NC

Pinecrest, the defending state 4A champion, may be all that stands between SE#1 Chapel Hill and an NTN berth. Junior Andy Wacker, at 15:42 for 3.05 miles, and seniors Jed Black (15:51) and Jordan Rickard (15:55) went 1-2-3 overall to lead Pinecrest, ranked #2 in the state 4A classification behind Chapel Hill, to a 26-point win in its region meet. Pinecrest, which scored 15 to win its conference meet a week earlier, has the talent up front and the quality depth – the top 5 spread 29 seconds on Saturday, and regular #4 Chase Williams was rested – to make things very interesting in this weekend’s 4A meet.

Buchholz had no answer for Flagler Palm Coast’s talent up front – overall winner Justin Harbor in particular – but the Bobcats won their district meet thanks to superior depth. Buchholz senior Kellam Bartley, 3rd overall at 16:40 for 5K, led a top 5 that averaged 17:02 (Flagler Palm Coast was at 16:47) but spread only 42 seconds.

(w/ week #7 ranking)

1. EPISCOPAL, JACKSONVILLE FL (#1)

10/29 – FHSAA 2A DISTRICT 2, 5K, Bishop Kenny High School, Jacksonville FL

SE#1 Episcopal showed no mercy on its area rivals, sweeping the first five spots in its district meet and putting 7 in the top 11. Running as a tight pack – all seven Episcopal runners hit the mile mark at 6:07 – the Eagles overwhelmed a quality 15-team district field that included Bolles, the defending state 2A champion, and host Bishop Kenny, 3rd in last year’s state meet and runner-up three straight years before. Sophomore Laura Steel was first in the chute at 18:47, and her teammates quickly filled in, spreading just 16 seconds 1-5. "When we run together like that, we're always encouraging each other, saying keep up, stay together," Steel told the Florida Times-Union after the race. "With a quarter mile to go, I told Katie [Traylor] she could win. But she said, 'No, you go ahead.' I had something left so I just went as hard as I could at the end." Episcopal’s top 5 averaged 18:56.

Said Episcopal Coach Michelle Krueger two days after the race: “The district meet was the first race they have run the first mile together, and I think they really had fun with it. The goal is to win the regional championship with the same approach and then have them each individually rested in order to run their best at state. We would like to break the state record for the lowest score” – 21 points.

4. OAKTON, VIENNA VA (#4)
also: WESTFIELD, VA (---)

10/27 – CONCORDE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS, Burke Lake 2.98 Mile Course, Burke Lake VA

In the state’s most top-heavy district meet, Oakton senior Kayley Byrne won her first individual title to lead the Cougars to a 20-point win over a strong Westfield team in second (38-58). Fairfield, which entered ranked #5 in the state across all classifications, was third at 67, and Robinson, ranked #7, was fourth at 76. Byrne covered the 2.98-mile layout in a personal-best 17:49, the fastest performance of the season at Burke Lake. Junior Meredith Tighe was second in the chute for Oakton, finishing 7th overall at 18:37, and the team’s #5 runner, sophomore Hallie Eilerts, was home in 18:50 to round out a top 5 that averaged 18:33, also a season best at Burke Lake. Sophomore Carly Hudson, a top-5 runner seeing her first major action since Great American, finished 17th overall at 19:05. “They were focused and looked good,” Oakton Coach Scott Raczko said of his girls. “They ran as a very strong pack throughout the entire race. This was their best performance of the year, and it comes at exactly the right time…. I think we are where we need to be and are ready for the two biggest meets of the season.”

Westfield was led by junior Alexis Deegan, 3rd overall at 18:09, sophomore Tasia Potasinksi (6th at 18:34) and sophomore Brittany Sevachko (8th at 18:38), but the talent up front was not enough to compensate for Oakton’s far superior depth. Still, Westfield’s top 5 average of 18:44 is second only to Oakton’s this season at Burke Lake. And with a top 7 that includes not one senior, Westfield is a team that is likely to be heard from again.

5. BRENTSVILLE DISTRICT, NOKESVILLE VA (#5)

10/27 – NORTHWESTERN DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Great Meadows (non-state) Course, The Plains VA

SE#5 Brentsville entered its district meet having gone almost three weeks since its last serious race, a disappointing 11th-place finish in the Eastern States race at the Manhattan Invitational on Oct. 8. Early returns from Great Meadows suggest Coach Rob Dulin and the Tigers made good use of that time in between. Becky Stewart set the table for Brentsville with a first-place finish at 18:29 for 5K. Five teammates behind her dipped under 20:00 to nail down a 26-point win over Handley in second. Brentsville’s top 5 averaged 19:26 (Brentsville won the district title last year with an average of 20:16 and went on to finish second in the state 2A meet), and the Tigers were going without #2 Lauren Bussian, sidelined by an ankle sprain. Bussian is expected to race on Thursday in the Region II meet.

Lacey Wright, 1st overall at 19:37 for 5K, and Caitlin Chitwood (3rd at 20:00) led a Scottsboro top 5 that averaged 20:36 and spread 1:38. Twin sisters Nicole and Kimberly Muldowney were first in the chute for Hoover (finishing 2nd and 4th overall at 19:52 and 20:04), as the Bucs averaged 20:45 1-5 and spread 1:37.

9. COLLINS HILL GA (#9)

10/29 – REGION 7 AAAAA CHAMPIONSHIP, 5K, Gainesville College, Gainesville GA

Collins Hill appears poised to capture its 3rd consecutive state 5A title. The Eagles dominated their region meet on Saturday, led by defending state champion Jackie Drouin, who laid down a 17:52 5K to win by more than a minute. Teammates Erin Guglielmo and Alexis Nichols, at 18:55 and 18:56, were next in the chute. Allyson McGinty and Hillary Hamby rounded out a top 5 that averaged 19:07 and spread 2:12. Collins Hill won this meet last year with a top-5 average of 19:58; and in the Gwinnett County meet on Sept. 17, held on this same course, Drouin-Guglielmo-Nichols-McGinty-Hamby averaged 19:52. Collins Hill Coach Andrew Hudson called it “definitely our best performance of the season.”

For Drouin, who went 19:09 to win that county meet but whose individual exploits this season have been overshadowed by state rivals Emily Borsare and Emily Reese, it was a career-first sub-18:00 effort and another indication that Georgia could be very well represented at Foot Locker Nationals in December. “She looked fantastic,” Hudson said of his ace, noting that Drouin ran 3:38.7 for 1200 meters in a time trial on the track a week earlier.

MORGANTOWN WV (---)
CABELL MIDLAND, ONA WV (---)
PRESTON, KINGWOOD WV (---)

10/29 – WEST VIRGINIA STATE AAA CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Mineral Wells, WV

Morgantown had a bull’s-eye on its back all season and entered Saturday’s 3A meet facing a quality field that RunWV.com rated as the “highest level in memory.” In particular, Preston, which had suffered agonizingly close losses to Morgantown in the conference and region meets, and Cabell Midland, which entered undefeated on the season, seemed poised to take down the defending state champions. But on a foggy and near-freezing morning in Mineral Wells (an unexpected snow storm earlier in the week had knocked out power and closed schools for two days), the Mohigans showed again why they’re the top team in West Virginia. Senior Maria Dalzot, who inherited the #1 spot from 2004 state runner-up Claire Berryman, came through with a 5th-place finish at 18:58 – 79 seconds faster than her 6th-place finish from a year earlier. Junior Monica Chase, 13th at 19:58, sophomore Emma Berry (15th at 20:05), freshman Allison Pettit (16th at 20:08), and sophomore Aubrey Moskal (21st at 20:16) filled in well behind – spreading 18 seconds 2-5 – to deliver the state title, 5 points up on Preston in second with Cabell Midland another 6 points behind. Morgantown’s top 5 averaged 19:53 on the challenging 5K layout at Mineral Wells, significantly faster that the 20:20 the team averaged last year to earn the 3A win. “The girls did a great job,” Morgantown Coach John Patti said. “They were under a lot of pressure and responded well.”

As it has been all year for the Mohigans, Patti added, Saturday’s win “was a total team effort. Our 2 through 7 runners ran together mainly in a pack and placed well. Our 6 and 7 runners” – senior Erica Arthurs (27th at 20:39) and junior Ahna Lewis (38th at 20:58) – “were very important as they finished before [Preston’s] 5th runner. We knew Dalzot would place in the top 5 somewhere. It was runners 2 through 7 who would make the difference.”

Preston had three runners in the chute before Morgantown had two: junior Kaylyn Christopher (2nd overall at 18:42), junior Amber Riley (11th at 18:46) and sophomore Ashley Teets (10th at 19:40). But for the third week in row Preston’s formidable front three were (just) unable to offset Morgantown’s superior depth. Cabell Midland, unbeaten but still low on the radar until dominating wins in its conference and region meets, was led by sophomore Rachel Riley (7th at 19:36) and junior Alicia Thomas (9th at 19:39).

One measure of how the talent in this meet stacked up to years past: in 2002, 2003 and 2004 the number of runners in the 3A meet to break 20:00 on this same layout at Mineral Wells was 1, 3 and 4, respectively. On Saturday that number was 13.

CHAPEL HILL NC (---)
GREEN HOPE NC (---)

10/29 – MIDEAST 4-A REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, SAS Soccer Park, Cary NC

Chapel Hill put five runners in the top 11 overall to easily win its 20-team region meet – and outscore the SE#1 Chapel Hill boys (39-46). Junior Becky Johnson led the Tigers with a 4th-place finish at 18:52, and junior Lindsay Clendaniel, 11th overall at 19:27, rounded out a top 5 that averaged 19:18 and spread 35 seconds on the challenging 5K layout at SAS Soccer Park, site of Great American. On a very similar course at Great American five weeks earlier – the start and finish were a bit higher up the hill on Saturday – Chapel Hill averaged 20:09 (and ROC runner-up Episcopal FL averaged 19:46).

Green Hope, which has been slowed by injuries this season, had its regular top 5 running together for the first time in more than a month and finished second behind senior Brittany Johnson’s 3rd-place finish at 18:46. Green Hope’s top 5 averaged 19:52 after going 20:24 at Great American on Sep. 24. “Some good times for both teams on a tough course,” said Green Hope Coach Mike Miragliuolo. Green Hope and Chapel Hill, which entered ranked #1 and #3, respectively, in the state 4A classification, will meet again on Saturday in the state meet at Tanglewood. Charlotte Providence, ranked #2, finished a distant second in its regional meet.
