Boys

(w/ week #6 ranking)

1. CHAPEL HILL NC (#1)

10/18 – PAC-6 4-A CHAMPIONSHIP, 3 miles, East Chapel Hill High School NC

SE#1 Chapel Hill, just coming off a convincing win in the Tanglewood Invitational on Oct. 15, shrugged off a short break between races and scored 19 points to win its conference meet, 32 points up on host East Chapel Hill in second. The Tigers’ big three of Jack Bolas (15:05), Ryan Workman (15:27) and Duncan Hoge (15:36) went 1-2-3 on the roughly 3-mile layout (the course was shortened slightly from 5K due to safety concerns). Miles Rampel (5th at 16:11) and Taylor Muir (8th at 16:29) rounded out the top 5. With regionals and states all that stand between Chapel Hill and a possible NTN bid, and with neither meet featuring a challenger the Tigers haven’t handled previously, Coach Ron Olsen was asked if he worried the team might be caught flat-footed while gazing into the future. Not really, he said: “The guys seem to get the idea that nothing happens in December if we don’t do the job in October and November. They’ve heard it enough, both from myself and from each other, that the focus is always on what’s next as opposed to five or six weeks ahead.”

Team scores: SE#1 Chapel Hill 19; East Chapel Hill 51; (6 teams total)

7. MARIST, ATLANTA GA (#6)
also: WALTON GA (---)

10/22 – LAST CHANCE INVITATIONAL, 5K, State Meet Course, Carrollton GA

With many teams resting runners in anticipation of regionals and states, Walton GA got the better of a depleted Marist GA for a second straight weekend, winning the 5A race at the Last Chance Invitational behind Jay Heller’s and Corey Hunter’s 1-2 finish. Marist #1 Iain Turnbull, out sick with the flu in a dual meet loss to Walton a week earlier, was held out again on Saturday after missing more than a week of training; injury and illness have also eroded the team’s depth at the back end. Marist returns to Carrollton for the state meet on Nov. 5, and Coach Roy Benson is hoping the team will be at full strength again by then.

Heller and Hunter went 15:53 and 16:33 on the challenging state meet course at Carrollton, leading a Walton team that entered as the top-ranked team in the state 5A classification (Marist entered #1 at 4A but elected to compete in the 5A race). Though regular top-7 runners Thomas Pilliod and Mark Viglotti were held out of the race by Coach Tom Williams, Walton, with a top 5 average of 16:52, was the only team in the meet to post a team average of less than 17:00. Two teams from the 4A race (St Pius X GA and Chapel Hill GA, both at 17:12) and 3A race winner Westminster GA (17:10) bettered Marist’s average of 17:14.

8. HOOVER AL (#8)

10/22 – MT. SAC INVITATIONAL, 2.91 miles, Walnut CA

Competing in the most select team race at the giant Mt. SAC Invitational, SE#8 Hoover finished 14th out of 16 teams. Junior Tim Landry led the Bucs with a 36th place finish, covering the 2.91-mile layout in 15:47, and the top 5 spread just 45 seconds. But Hoover was a bit overmatched in this loaded field; race winner and US#3 Royal CA had its top 5 in the chute before Landry and finished almost 5 minutes faster in total time. Hoover Coach Devon Hind said his boys learned a valuable lesson on the trip. On the advice of a local coach, who suggested holding back in the early going since runners would be falling back on the hills, Hoover ran conservatively in the early stages of the race. “Big mistake!” Hind said. “Nobody came back, and it's too difficult to make up ground on a field of that quality – they were wishing they had another crack at it, but you live and learn. I'm not sure how much better they would have done if they had gone hard from the start, but they learned to trust in their own abilities and not necessarily go with conventional wisdom.”

10/19 – PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Fort Washington Park MD

SE#2 Roosevelt continued its NTN push with a perfect 15 in its county meet, going 1-2-3-4-5-6-8 with its top 7 in the 12-team field. Sophomore Dominique Lockhart (19:28), junior Marika Walker (19:29) and freshman Teshika Rivers (19:57) were first in the chute on the hilly 5K layout at Fort Washington Park, but most encouraging for Coach Desmond Dunham was the performance of junior Jennifer Redman in 4th (20:13). Redman, who ran #2 for Roosevelt last year, continues to move up the depth chart after an injury-slowed start to the season and in the county meet was the key to season-low 1-5 spread of 1:12. “Jennifer Redman’s return has been a catalyst for our team’s performance and improvement,” Dunham said, noting that previous #4 Tunisia Milner (6th at 20:44) and #6 Tyreka Arrington (5th at 20:40) have made big strides this fall in step with Redman. “We are still looking for Redman to run at least with [#3] Rivers by states,” Dunham added, “which would make us a very competitive national-level team… Redman is definitely our pivotal runner at this point.”

10/22 – MT. SAC INVITATIONAL, 2.91 miles, Walnut CA

SE#8 Hoover carried the flag for the Southeast Region in the featured team race at Mt. SAC on Saturday and turned in a very respectable 7th-place finish. Matched against many of the best teams on the West Coast, the Bucs finished 31 points up on CA#10 Fairfield CA in 9th and just 1 point back of CA#3 Murrieta Valley in 6th. Sophomore Nicole and Kimberly Muldowney were out front for Hoover, finishing 10th and 11th overall at 18:19 and 18:22. Juniors Amy Chen (45th at 19:25) and Brittany Kahlstorf (46th at 19:26) and senior Jourdan Burke (73rd at 20:02) rounded out a top 5 that averaged 19:07 on the challenging 2.91-mile layout. CA#2 (and US#6) Buchanan averaged 18:18 and edged out CA#5 La Costa Canyon 88-93 for the win. “Our girls did hold their own, primarily on the outstanding efforts of the Muldowney twins,” said Hoover Coach Devon Hind. “They are so consistent from week to week – and getting better as their confidence grows…. It was a great learning experience. And fun too!”

Cardinal Gibbons, which dropped out of the regional rankings after a 17th-place finish at Great American, finished 2nd in an earlier Division I race. Senior Heather Beichner, 8th overall at 18:44, led a Gibbons top 5 that averaged 19:23.

Eight days after Morgantown WV beat rival Preston WV by 6 points in the conference meet, the margin was down to 2 in the Region I Championships. Once again Morgantown’s tight pack, led by senior Maria Dalzot and junior Monica Chase (4th and 5th overall at 19:26 and 19:38, respectively), was able to compensate for Preston’s greater speed up front.
