10/15 – 4-RUNNERS ONLY TANGLEWOOD INVITATIONAL, 5K, Tanglewood Park NC

Chapel Hill remained in control of its NTN destiny with a win in the Tanglewood Invitational. Jack Bolas was first in the chute to pace the Tigers, going 15:33 for 5K on the challenging state-meet course at Tanglewood. Ryan Workman was 3rd overall at 16:06, and Duncan Hoge, still recovering from the bug that laid him low at the end of last month, was 10th at 16:34. “He didn’t look real strong in the last mile today, certainly not like he usually does,” Coach Ron Olsen said of Hoge. “Hopefully he’ll get through this soon.” Miles Rampel (18th at 17:11) and Taylor Muir (23rd at 17:14) rounded out a top 5 that averaged 16:32 and finished ahead of second-place Pinecrest NC by 19 points and 1:44 in total time.

2. ST. XAVIER, LOUISVILLE KY (#2)

10/15 – LEXINGTON CATHOLIC INVITATIONAL, 5K, Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington KY

Kentucky 3A superpower and SE#2 St. Xavier made short work of most of its top state rivals on Saturday, scoring 34 points in the 42-team Lexington Catholic Invitational. Trinity, rated #2 in the 3A classification in the latest coaches poll, finished second at 70, followed by state 1A #1 St. Henry at 140 and 3A #3 Daviess County at 171. Out of a field of 317 runners, St. Xavier’s front four of Scott McClain (15:47 for 5K), Thomas Davis (16:03), Brian Long (16:21) and Sean Brotzge (16:27) finished 2-3-7-8 behind overall winner Michael Eaton of Greenwood KY (15:05). Daniel Schneider (17th at 16:53) rounded out a top 5 that averaged 16:18 for 5K and spread 66 seconds. Running on the same course two weeks earlier, at the Franklin County Invitational, St. Xavier averaged 16:25. “Everything went real well on Saturday,” Coach Chuck Medley said. “My second man moved closer to my third man, my fourth man is right behind my third and I found a consistent number 6 who came in right behind our number 5. We beat our main rival, Trinity, which is a very good team, and we more than halved their score.”

3. JEFFERSON S&T, ALEXANDRIA VA (#3)
also: OAKTON, VIENNA VA (#8)

10/5 – EASTERN STATES, 2.5 miles, Van Cortlandt Park, New York City

What a difference five days (and a #1 runner) can make. Less than a week after looking lost in its own invitational, unranked Oakton VA found its way farther north and won over a strong field – including SE#3 Jefferson VA – on a very windy day at the Boys Eastern States Championship in Van Cortlandt Park. Of course getting senior James Phillips back certainly helped. Phillips had badly cut his shoulder in a freak accident eight days earlier and was therefor unavailable to race at the Glory Days Invitational on Oct. 10. Without him, the Cougars, then ranked 8th in the region, scuffled to a 4th-place finish behind Jefferson up front, then unranked Herndon VA, and then SE#10 West Springfield VA. “We did not run well at all at Glory Days, and I was very disappointed with the performance,” said Oakton Coach Phillip Tiller. “We went back to the drawing board and the boys and I figured out what we needed to do to get the job done in New York.”

Phillips, his stitches removed the night before the race, set the table with a 3rd-place finish at 12:54 (Georgetown Prep MD star Steve Duplinsky was the overall winner at 12:38). Senior Matt Kroetch (11th at 13:11), senior Tommy Mason (27th at 13:29), sophomore Joe LoRusso (31st at 13:33), and junior Alex Nissen (34th at 13:41) filled in quickly behind for a top 5 that scored 106 and averaged 13:22 on the 2.5-mile Van Cortlandt layout.

Unranked LaSalle was second at 122. Jefferson, at 141, and NE#9 Cardinal O’Hara PA (166) rounded out the top 4 in the 20-team field.

Jefferson, though the winner at Glory Days, did not look as strong in that meet as some had expected, and in New York the Colonials were beaten rather soundly by Oakton man for man. Sophomore Brian Landry (12th overall at 13:12) and junior Paul Norland (17th at 13:17) led a tight pack that spread just 39 seconds 1-5, but the average time of 13:31 was almost 10 seconds back of the Cougars in first.

“I was quite sure that TJ was the team to beat, and they are tough,” Oakton’s Tiller said. “That type of course works to our advantage as we train on the crushed cinder and hills quite a bit by the high school. I have been working with the kids on 1000m intervals, and that really paid off in a 4K course. They knew where they were and what paces they needed to hit. It was a great day for us.”

5. HOLY TRINITY, MELBOURNE FL (#4)

10/15 – HOLY TRINITY FALL CLASSIC, 5K, Holy Trinity Academy, Melbourne FL

After a well-deserved week off following a grueling first month of the season, SE#5 Holy Trinity was back on the throttle in its home invitational. Though heavy rains the day before softened and slowed the flat 5K layout, sophomore Kyle Cooke was plenty quick up front, getting the overall win at 15:45 two weeks after placing 4th in the big flrunners.com meet (15:42). Junior Nate Taylor had his best race of the season, finishing 4th at 16:03, and senior Austin Joiner was next in the chute at 16:14. Senior Keith Potter (18th at 16:57) and freshman Bret Butler (21st at 17:09) also had strong races to round out a top 5 that averaged 16:25. The return of junior Kyle Butler to the varsity lineup – he ran 16:46 in the JV race on Saturday – should make Holy Trinity even stronger as it approaches its championship-season drive. “We have not backed off an ounce yet, and continue to improve weekly,” Coach Doug Butler said.

8. HOOVER AL (#9)
also: SMITHS STATION AL (---)

10/15 – HUSKY CHALLENGE, 5K, Hewitt-Trussville High School, Trussville AL

One week after winning the Furman (SC) Invitational by 1 point, SE#8 Hoover AL increased the margin to 2 at the Husky Challenge. This week it was state rival Smiths Station that came up just short, though the total-time differential was a slightly less close 51 seconds. Jeremy Moujoodi and Tim Landry led the way for the Bucs up front, going 2-3 overall at 15:51 and 16:01, respectively, on the flat and fast 5K layout at Hewitt-Trussville High School. Hoover put 5 runners under 17:00 and spread 59 seconds – the first time this season under one minute – despite going without #4 runner Patrick McGregor, who was unavailable due to illness.

Smiths Station put six runners under 17:00 and spread just 34 seconds 1-5, but the Panthers lacked the speed up front to take down Hoover. Mountain Brook AL freshman Bill Matthews lacked little in a 10-second win at 15:41.

9. WEST SPRINGFIELD VA (#10)
also: CLARKE COUNTY, BERRYVILLE VA (---)

10/15 – RUNNIN’ WITH THE WOLVES INVITATIONAL, 5K, Wolf Branch Farm, Forest VA

West Springfield ace Mike Spooner was the class of the field at the Runnin’ with the Wolves Invitational, winning at 16:25 on a tough course at Wolf Branch Farm, but the absence of usual #5 runner Loring Ross led to a 2nd-place finish in the team standings, 4 points behind Jamestown VA. Jamestown, which entered as the 3rd-ranked team in the state AA classification and outside the overall top 10, finished 64 seconds behind West Springfield in total time but benefited from a 75-second gap between the West Springfield 4 and 5 runners. Ross, according to Spartans Coach Vic Kelbaugh, developed a high fever late in the week and was not well enough to run on Saturday. “Our top four boys performed well [Saturday], but, yes, we were missing number five,” Kelbaugh said.

Simon Biddle-Snead of Clarke County VA, running unattached, finished 3rd overall at 16:54 behind Spooner and Christiansburg VA’s John Horst (16:44). “We wanted to get Simon in another fast race since he won’t have much competition for the rest of the year” until Foot Locker, Clarke County Coach Dustin Sweeney said. “We felt like this has been a very solid season for the entire team, but Simon wasn't getting exposure to top competition that he needs to reach the next level.” Clarke County, #3 overall in the latest state coaches poll and the winner of the 39-team Oatlands Invitational on Sept. 24 (where SE#7 Herndon VA finished 3rd), has struggled to raise its regional profile and had its meet on Oct. 8 – the Albemarle Invitational – flooded out. Albemarle was postponed until Oct. 11; Biddle-Snead ran and finished 2nd overall behind Patterson Wilhelm of E.C. Glass VA (15:52 and 16:24 for 5K), but the rest of the Clarke County team was unable to attend.

Parkview, which last week slipped to #2 behind Collins Hill in the state coaches poll for the 5A classification, put seven runners in the top-30 overall in the 19-team field, with a top-5 average of 16:48 and spread of 38 seconds.

10/11 – BAY CUP TIGER TRAILS, 5K, Ed Radice Park, Tampa FL

In muggy weather, James Osborne went 15:58 to lead Tampa-Jesuit to a 10-point win in the Bay Cup Tiger Trails meet at the Ed Radice Sports Complex. Conner Revord (16:40) and John Evans (16:50) finished 4-5 overall in the 19-team Hillsborough County affair. With Evans returning to form after re-dedicating himself to the sport over the summer, and with the injured Phil Scrivner and Mike Atkins expected to be healthy and ready to go by next week’s district meet, Tampa-Jesuit could be very tough to beat come November.

10/15 – PANHANDLE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Marianna FL

Another Florida team that started hot but then cooled, Chiles appears to be warming up again in time for the championship-season drive. Matched up against an unimposing 22-team field in Saturday’s Panhandle Championship, Chiles ace Jonathan Blocker made use of the fine weather (mid-60s) and fast course to lay down a 15:25 up front. Junior Chris Lake, slowed the past month by bronchitis, was 2nd at 16:24, and seven other Chiles runners came in under 17:00. (w/ week #5 ranking)

1. EPISCOPAL, JACKSONVILLE FL (#1)
also: HOLY TRINITY, MELBOURNE FL (---)

10/15 – HOLY TRINITY FALL CLASSIC, 5K, Holy Trinity Academy, Melbourne FL

SE#1 Episcopal put nine runners under 20 minutes on the way to an easy win in Holy Trinity Invitational. Sophomore Maggie Traylor and her younger sister Katie, an 8th-grader, did the work up front, finishing 3rd and 4th overall at 18:34 and 18:38, respectively, on the flat but rain-softened 5K layout at Holy Trinity. Sophomore Laura Steel, #1 for the Eagles at Great American and flrunners.com, was slowed by an unsettled pre-race breakfast and finished 9th overall at 18:57. Preseason #1 Emily Ingham, in her first race since being sidelined by a hip injury just prior to great American, was 10th at 19:04, and 8th-grader Leslie Blackshear (11th at 19:07) rounded out a top 5 that averaged 18:52. “The girls are training so well together that I know on any day one girl may have a better race than her teammate,” Episcopal Coach Michelle Krueger said. “There is no real clear order, which I think is an advantage. This way they don’t hold back because they do not want to pass a friend who is in their ‘spot.’”

Wellington FL freshman sensation Ashley Brasovan had no worries about passing anyone on the way to an overall win at 17:37. Kayla Hale carried the flag for host Holy Trinity, finishing 2nd at 18:10, and teammate Rebecca Zuhlke also broke 19:00 (8th at 18:56), but the Tigers still had to give up the championship trophy for the first time in the meet’s six-year existence.

2. OAKTON, VIENNA VA (#3)

10/5 – EASTERN STATES, 2.5 miles, Van Cortlandt Park, New York City

SE#2 Oakton’s season hit an unexpected speed bump at the Fordham Eastern States meet in Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday, as the defending champions finished second to unranked Pope John NJ. The Cougars, who scored 35 points to win this meet easily last year, faced stiffer competition in their return trip, scoring 82 points to Pope John’s 59, with Haddonfield NJ at 88 in 3rd. Oakton, still going without top-5 runner Carly Hudson but fresh off a strong performance in the Glory Days Grill Invitational five days earlier, was no match for overall winner Lara Heigis (14:49) and her Pope John team on this day. Kayley Byrne paced the Cougars with a solid 4th-place finish at 15:36 on the 2.5-mile layout at Van Cortlandt, but the team did not fill in quickly enough to challenge the eventual winners, averaging 16:10 through 5 compared to 15:52 for Pope John. Hudson, who Coach Scott Raczko believes could run as high as #2 for the team and certainly will shore up the pack behind Byrne, is expected to race in the district meet on Oct. 27.

Annie Castagno, Katie Kershner and Juliet Bottorff went 3-4-5 as Tatnall got the better of state rival Padua in the 30-team Bellevue Invitational. All three also broke 19:00 for a Tatnall top 5 that averaged a program-record 18:55 on the swift layout at Bellevue. “Our girls are beginning to turn the corner,” Coach Patrick Castagno said. “We are still racing tired right now, so I am pleased with the result today. Most of the girls hit their goal times for this meet and are beginning to realize what they can do.”

Jen Watunya paced Padua DE with her second-place finish overall at 18:23. Padua, which finished 20 points behind Tatnall, had all of its top 5 under 20:00 and put six runners in the top 30 overall. Padua’s top 5 average of 19:19 is almost 30 seconds faster than its winning average from 2004 (19:47).

6. SCOTTSBORO AL (#9)
7. HOOVER AL (---)
8. MOUNTAIN BROOK AL (#5)

10/15 – HUSKY CHALLENGE, 5K, Hewitt-Trussville High School, Trussville AL

In a heavyweight matchup between the top three teams in the state – and three of the best in the region – SE#8 Mountain Brook AL landed big blows to SE#6 Scottsboro AL and SE#7 Hoover. Displaying superior speed and depth, Mountain Brook dominated the 11-team Husky Challenge, finishing 16 points up on Scottsboro and 25 up on Hoover. Points hardly tell the story, however. Madeline Morgan, who finished 2nd overall at 18:18, and Leslie Boozer (3rd at 18:27), were the pacesetters for the Spartans, and behind them the team was quick to fill in. Four additional Mountain Brook runners broke 20:00 on the flat and fast 5K layout at Hewitt-Trussville High School, and the team’s #7 runner went 20:01. Mountain Brook’s top 5 averaged an eye-popping 19:00. As if that wasn’t enough, Mountain Brook freshman Lucy Newton won the JV race at 19:42 – 10 seconds faster than sophomore teammate Reed Ellis ran in the varsity race at #5.

In last year’s race, a month before the team would be selected to compete at the 2004 Nike Team Nationals, Scottsboro won this meet with a top 5 average of 19:18 – on a course that, due to storm damage, was 80 meters short. (Meet Director David Dobbs of Hewitt-Trussville confirmed the 2005 course was a full 5K, based on 6 separate wheel measurements.)

This year, Scottsboro was led by overall winner Lacey Wright (18:13), and Nicole and Kimberly Muldowney ran well up front for Hoover (finishing 5th at 18:35 and 7th at 18:49, respectively), but neither challenger had its #4 runner in the chute before Mountain Brook’s #6. Neither ran poorly either: Scottsboro’s top 5 averaged 19:27 (about 10 seconds faster than last year’s adjusted time for a full 5K) and Hoover was at 19:35, both season bests. Two of Hoover’s runners were a bit under the weather, but, said Bucs Coach Devon Hind, “If Mountain Brook runs like this the rest of the year, they will not be beaten.”

That Mountain Brook finished a distant 2nd behind Hoover just a week earlier, at the Furman (SC) Invitational, testifies to the vagaries of this sport – and the huge role the psychological component plays in athletic performance. Noting that his team traveled to Furman in the middle of a testing period, Mountain Brook coach Greg Echols observed, “Most of our kids are good students, and our system has very tough academic expectations. I think the combination of the tests and ranking expectations were just more than they could handle. It probably helped to have the bad race and take some of the pressure off. We changed our training a little last week, to make it a little more fun.”

Looking ahead, Echols added, “We are as healthy as we have been all season and hopefully ready to
adjust training in the last month and drop to some even faster times.”

9. COLLINS HILL GA (#6)

10/15 – THE MILL RUN, 5K, Clinton Farms GA

Even with ace Jackie Drouin running elsewhere, SE#9 Collins Hill put all seven runners in the top 15 at the 10-team Mill Run meet. Junior Erin Guglielmo assumed the #1 role in Drouin’s absence and picked up the overall win at 18:57 on a soft, mostly flat 5K layout that Collins Hill Coach Andrew Hudson described as “faster than anything we’ve run probably but not what I thought it might be.” Behind Guglielmo and senior Alexis Nichols (3rd overall at 19:06), the Eagles were a bit slower than usual filling in, however, spreading 1:50 through 5. “My top two ran really well but our gap was huge after that,” Hudson said. “I think my second group stayed in a pack when they should have busted out and run, but in our region meet in two weeks they’ll have to.”

Drouin, the overall winner at the Furman (SC) Invitational a week earlier (though her team, going without #3 Nichols, struggled behind her and finished 3rd behind SE#7 Hoover AL and SE#8 Mountain Brook AL), skipped The Mill Run to race again in South Carolina at the Sandhills Invitational. “Jackie wanted to run with Kate Niehaus to gauge her readiness for a race like Foot Locker,” Hudson said. Drouin got the overall win at Sandhills against some good competition, going 18:29 for 5K, but Spring Valley SC did not run its star senior in the race.

The host Bobcats had 4 runners under 20:00, averaged 19:48 through 5, and put 6 in the top eight overall. “It was a far cry from flrunners.com and Great American,” Coach Ron Norris said, “but you also need a meet like this sometimes.” Buchholz finished 3rd in the seeded race at Great American, 13 points behind SE#4 Tatnall DE in 1st, and a week later was runner-up to SE#1 Episcopal FL in the big flrunners.com meet.
