Southeast Week #2
Week ending Sept. 17, 2005
By Ben Ackerly, NTN Southeast Region Editor

BOYS (w/ preseason ranking)

1. Jefferson S&T, Alexandria VA (#1)

9/17 – Lake Forest Invitational, 5K, Killens Pond State Park, Felton, DE
Conditions: Relatively flat course with some sandy portions; weather hot and humid.

Jefferson, again running at less than full strength, put five runners in the top 13 to defend its team title. Held out by Coach Matt Ryan were last week’s #1 Paul Norland (sick) and #4 James Komen (sprained ankle). Projected #2 Brian Landry, held out last week with knee problems, ran #2 on Saturday and finished 5th overall. “The team ran well,” Ryan said. “Brian [Landry] returned with a strong first race and Ben Kuebrich and Richard Prevost had strong races.”

[Note: complete results not available as of 9/19]

2. Oakton, Vienna VA (---) – Unranked entering the season and off this past weekend after a season-opening win at the Great Meadows Invitational (The Plains, VA), Oakton gets a big test on Saturday at Great American. Oakton had 10 runners under 18 minutes on a tough course at Great Meadows, and Coach Phil Tiller would like to see his top five below 17:00 on Saturday. “We will be doing two tough workouts this week on Monday and Wednesday,” Tiller added. “The guys will be a little beat up going into Great American, but we have to keep training for our ultimate goal at States. They are excited about GA and we will certainly be going after success there. Everyone is healthy and training is going very well.”

3. Brentsville District, Nokesville VA (#3)

9/17 – Brentsville Relays, 5x2500 meters, Brentsville High School
Conditions: Flat, grass loop, dampened by recent rain and slightly muddy; low 70s

Comfortable, course-record win (on familiar terrain) at the Brentsville Relays. Brentsville also got a meet-record win in the B race (for varsity runners 5-10), clocking 42:20, a mark that would have placed 17th in the A race. Next up: Great American.

Team scores: 1. SE#3 Brentsville VA 39:33 (meet record, previous record 39:51, West Springfield VA, 2001); 2. Colonial Forge VA 39:57; 3. North Stafford VA 40:38; 4. Eleanor Roosevelt MD 40:44; 5. 4. Holy Trinity, Melbourne FL (#2)
6. Tampa-Jesuit FL (#5)
8. Chiles, Tallahassee FL (---)
Also: Walton GA (---)

9/17 – FSU Invitational, 5K, Tallahassee, FL
Conditions: hot and humid; course 50m long w/ 2 300m climbs, slower than in previous year

In a meet featuring the state’s three best boys teams, SE#8 Chiles proved its season-opening victory in the Carrollton Invitational was no fluke, racing to the team title at FSU behind overall winner Jonathan Blocker. SE#4 Holy Trinity ran a close second, while SE#6 Tampa-Jesuit held on for third.
Tampa-Jesuit may have been the real winners of the day, however, as they ran close to Chiles and Holy Trinity even without ace James Osbourne, who competed unattached in the companion collegiate 8K and finished 29th overall at 26:34. Osbourne and Flagler Palm Coast’s Justin Harbor, who finished 20th in the 8K at 26:14, would have been heavily favored to run 1-2 in the prep 5K had they competed.
These three teams will meet again in two weeks at the flrunner’s.com Invitational, though where Holy Trinity finishes at Great American on Saturday may have broader implications for Florida’s big three.
Walton GA, the 2004 state 5A runner-up but a team that took big hits from graduation, finished a very respectable 4th in the team standings. Junior Jay Heller, who finished 3rd overall at FSU (16:09), has assumed the #1 spot for Coach Tom Williams, held last year by state champion Sam Bryfczynski.

5. Chapel Hill NC (#7) – An off weekend for Chapel Hill, meaning a chance to get healthy and locked in for the big test ahead at Great American. No. 1 Jack Bolas, after banging his knee into a street sign while on a training run in early September, missed some training but should be close to 100% by the end of the week. No. 3 Duncan Hoge, back home after finishing 31st in the 2005 Junior World Triathlon Championships in Gamagori, Japan (Steve Duplinsky of Georgetown Prep MD was the gold medalist), now gets to focus on running full time for a Tigers team that some think could be the region’s best if healthy. The focus on Saturday? “I'll just tell the kids that anyone in front of them in a different uniform is the one they have to beat,” Coach Ron Olsen said.

7. Hoover AL (#8) – Off this past weekend, Hoover’s next test comes Oct. 1 at the Jesse Owens Classic. “Our team continues to work hard and steady,” reports Coach Devon Hind. “We will train right through the Spain Park Invitational [Sept. 24] because we will not be seeing much competition.”

9. Parkview, Lilburn GA (#10)
also: Brookwood, Snellville GA (---)
Collins Hill GA (---)

9/17 – Gwinnett County Championships, 5K, Gainesville, GA

Parkview bounced back from a frustrating runner-up finish behind SE#8 Chiles FL in the Carrollton Invitational with a win in the Gwinnett County Championships. After spreading 67 seconds 1-5 at Carrollton, Parkview narrowed the gap to less than a minute for its top 6. “We ran much better than last week,” said first-year coach James Tigue, “but we will really find out more about ourselves this Saturday at Great American.”
Collins Hill, third in last year’s state 5A meet but missing projected #1 Nathan Frazier (and not even entered in the championship division at Carrollton), opened some eyes with its runner-up finish ahead of rival Brookwood GA. “They definitely had a breakthrough performance,” Coach Andrew Hudson said of his boys. Frazier, meanwhile, who has been sidelined by plantar fasciitis this season, could start running this week and possibly return to competition in October. “If he is able to make it back,” Hudson said, “we'll be on a whole different level for sure and could certainly contend with Parkview and Walton.”

10. Pinecrest, Southern Pines NC (---) – Off this past weekend, Pinecrest, ranked #2 in the state coaches poll for the 4A classification, behind SE#5 Chapel Hill, moved into the top 10 after a win in the Seahawk Invitational on Sept. 10.

Others:

Smiths Station AL (#4)

9/17 – Panther Invitational, 5K, Smiths Station High School
Conditions: Fast – hard pack dirt/short grass and no rain for 3 weeks

After a surprise season-opening loss on the road, Smiths Station finds its footing at home with a perfect 15 against area teams in the Panther Invitational. Junior Jay Moulton, who ran 4th in the loss to Roberson NC in the Eye Opener meet two weeks earlier, led the way for a top 5 that averaged 15:17 over 5K and spread just 29 seconds (spread for top 7 was 50 seconds). “We are all healthy and ready to go to the LaGrange Invitational this weekend in Georgia,” said Coach Ron Peters, who will take his team the following weekend to the big flrunner’s.com Invitational in Dade City, FL. “We hope to make a good push in the upcoming weeks to get back in the hunt for NTN.”

T.C. Roberson, Asheville NC (---)

9/15 – Buncombe County Championships, 5K, Black Mountain, NC
Conditions: Very difficult mountain course

Roberson continued its strong start to the season with a win in the county championship meet over defending champ Owen NC. Rams Coach Steve Carpenter called it the team’s best meet of the year. “We knew this would be a very difficult meet,” Carpenter told the Asheville Citizen-Times. “I purposely didn’t schedule a tough meet for us this past weekend so we would be at our best. And I couldn’t be much happier with our performance today. We beat a very good Owen team.” The Rams spread 65 seconds 1-5 on the tough mountain course at Camp Rockmont, and with #2 Michael Walker apparently recovered from a quad strain that had slowed him in earlier races, Roberson is at full strength heading into Great American.

McCallie, Chattanooga TN (---)
Oak Ridge TN (---)

9/17 – Tennessee Classic, 3 miles, Percy Warner Park, Nashville, TN
Conditions: high grass and soft footing from recent rain; temps in low 80s, sunny

McCallie should retain its #1 ranking in the state coaches poll after a win in the 50-team Tennessee Classic, particularly as the win came without top runner Riley Young. Young, laid low by a sinus infection, attempted to run on Saturday but dropped out after one mile. He should be fine next week, according to Coach Mike Wood. “Our remaining 6 stepped up,” Wood said. “Adam Gadberry had a terrible cold, but raced great… I was pleased overall as the guys raced tired during this phase of our training cycle. An ugly win, but better than a pretty second!”
Oak Ridge, #2 in the state coaches poll, finished third behind state #4 Memphis University School.
McEachern GA junior Ben Hubers was the overall winner in 14:57, handing Science Hill senior Todd Smalling (15:03) his first loss of the season.

Mountain Brook AL (#6)

9/17 – Mountain Brook Invitational, 3 miles, Mountain Brook High School

Freshman Bill Matthews leads the way for Mountain Brook in their home invitational. “The boys are getting there,” Coach Greg Echols said last week of a team that has struggled to fill in behind its ace. “We are probably about three weeks away from being ready to bust out a big team race. I think the gap will close dramatically between Bill and my next three.” On Matthews, Echols added, “Bill is running and training with real confidence right now. He still has a fair amount of upside potential. He is very disciplined and truly loves the sport.”

Loyola-Blakefield, Baltimore MD (---)

9/17 – Bull Run Invitational, Hereford HS 3-mile Course, Parkton, MD
Conditions: Very difficult course; temps in the mid-highs with high humidity

Loyola, after just edging out Broadneck MD to win the Barnhart Invitational on Sept. 10, nipped Broadneck again to win on the tough hills of Hereford. Georgetown Prep’s Steve Duplinsky, a week after winning the 2005 Junior World Triathlon Championships in Gamagori, Japan, dropped an eye-popping 16:03 on the field at Bull Run to win by 41 seconds.

GIRLS (w/ preseason ranking)

1. Scottsboro AL (#1)

9/17 – Scottsboro Invitational, 5K, John R. Esslinger Trail of Champions, Scottsboro High School
Conditions: Course is grass and packed gravel, fairly fast; weather hot and muggy.

Freshman Caitlin Chitwood and junior Lacey Wright lead Scottsboro again. The Wildcats spread 2:01 for 1-5 and 3:34 for 1-7, so they’re missing projected #4 Emily Thompson, who remains sidelined with an injured muscle in her calf. Still, Coach John Esslinger was happy with the team’s performance. “I was very pleased,” Esslinger said. “Most of our girls had PR's for this course. We need to close up our splits, [but] Caitlin and Lacey are really running well.”

Greg Echols’ girls score a perfect 15 against some light competition in their home invitational. A tougher test awaits Mountain Brook on Saturday at Great American. “We are way ahead of where we were this time last year,” Echols said prior to the meet this past weekend, “so hopefully we will continue to improve and be ready for some really fast times as the season progresses.”

3. Episcopal, Jacksonville FL (#4)
10. Our Lady of Lourdes, Miami FL (---)
also: Holy Trinity, Melbourne FL (#6)

SE#3 Episcopal solidified its standing among the best in the region with a dominating performance at the Florida State University Invitational, and the Eagles made it very clear that no team in Florida is currently on their level. For the second week in a row, and this time on a relatively challenging course, Episcopal had its top 5 under 20 minutes for 5K. All five runners were in the chute before the #2 for Holy Trinity (preseason SE#6), which finished 2nd, and the top runner of SE#10 Lourdes, which finished 3rd.
Holy Trinity, downgraded in the regional rankings after sluggish performances behind ace Kayla Hale, finished well back of Episcopal but also well up on Lourdes. Hale finished 3rd overall at 18:54.
Lourdes, the 2004 state 3A champion, was coming off a 1-2-3-4-6 finish at the Wildcat Invitational (Pensacola FL) a week earlier, spreading 47 seconds. At FSU the top-5 spread was 1:33, but the real problem was the talent in front of them.
How good Episcopal really is will be discovered on Saturday at Great American. Holy Trinity will be in Cary as well.

4. Cardinal Gibbons NC (#5)
Also: Green Hope, Cary NC (---)

9/17 – 2005 adidas Raleigh Invitational, 5K, SAS Soccer Park, Cary, NC
Conditions: hot and humid

SE#4 Cardinal Gibbons got a preview of this weekend’s Great American course in a win at the Raleigh Invitational. “The only difference in the course is that it ended on the big uphill rather than cutting across and going back downhill for the finish,” Gibbons Coach Justin Scranton said, adding that the course was also about 10-20 meters shorter than the one used for Great American. A hard week of training meant for some heavy legs for some of the Gibbons runners, all according to plan, said Scranton. Last year Gibbons averaged 20:43 in this meet and then averaged 20:20 at Great American. This past weekend Gibbons averaged 20:12, with a 1-5 spread of 57 seconds. “I think we are in a good spot,” said Scranton.
Green Hope Coach Mike Miragliuolo gave his A team the weekend off and raced his 9-15 runners in the second division at Raleigh. Miragliuolo said a few of his top runners are slightly dinged up, “but they should be good to go Saturday in the Race of Champions.”

5. Midlothian VA (---)
6. Brentsville District, Nokesville VA (#7)
Also: Eleanor Roosevelt MD (#10)
Westfield, Chantilly VA (---)
C.M. Wright MD (---)
Lake Braddock VA (#8)

9/17 – Brentsville Relays, 5x2500 meters, Brentsville High School
Conditions: Flat, grass loop, dampened by recent rain and slightly muddy; low 70s

Brentsville Relays winner Roosevelt, ranked #10 in the preseason, wasn’t an unknown coming in and as expected fought it out with Midlothian and Brentsville to the end. If not for a communication mix-up with the Brentsville team, resulting in #1 Becky Stewart running the 4th leg instead of anchor, the finish might have been even closer. Stewart posted the fastest split of the day on the 2500-meter loop, tying the meet record of 8:53 set by Jamissa Hess of C.D. Hylton MD in 2002 and Beth Fahey of Forest Park VA in 2003.
Roosevelt also won the B race (varsity runners 5-10), breaking the meet record by almost two minutes at 50:01, a mark that would have placed 15th overall in the A race. Coach Desmond Dunham was especially encouraged by junior Jennifer Redman’s 9:31 split and expects her to rejoin the top 5 in the meets to come.
Westfield VA, sixth in last year’s group 3A state meet and the winner of the Monroe-Parker Invitational on Sept. 10, was never up with the leaders but closed well in the end to finish 4th overall. Sophomore Tasia Potosinski turned in the team’s fastest leg (9:16).
Lake Braddock ran near the front through three legs before fading to 8th, one spot behind C.M. Wright MD. Senior Erin Klein split a team-leading 9:03 for Braddock, and sophomore Sara Bailey led C.M. Wright with a 9:10.
Quote of the week goes to Midlothian junior and anchor-leg runner M.C. Miller (who split 9:04). Asked prior to Saturday night’s race about her team’s reaction to its SE#5 ranking, Miller responded: “It’s really early in the season. We don’t want to take ourselves too seriously yet.”

Team scores: 1. Eleanor Roosevelt MD 46:29 (meet record, previous record 48:20, West Springfield, 2001); 2. SE#5 Midlothian VA 46:34; 3. SE#6 Brentsville VA 46:38; 4. Westfield VA 47:48; 5. 7. Oakton, Vienna VA (#3) – Off this week. Oakton is healthy and focused on the big picture as Great American looms. “We have to treat Great American as just another meet leading into the important post-season,” said Coach Scott Raczko. “It is our second meet and almost two months before our state championship. As with any meet, we expect to do our best and compete among the top teams. The meet is a great opportunity to compete in a competitive situation, which will help us as the season goes on. It is important for us, however, to remember that it is early and only one step in reaching our ultimate goals. From a training standpoint, we continue our training program and do not back off for any early-season meet. You can't if you want to peak at the end of the year.”

8. Collins Hill GA (---)

9/17 – Gwinnett County Championships, 5K, Gainesville, GA

Collins Hill’s Jackie Drouin won a tactical dual with Grayson’s Abby Self at the Gwinnett County Championships, but Drouin leads a team that will have to travel outside of Georgia to find a worthy competitor. Cary NC is the next stop.

A week after knocking off 2004 NTN representative C.M. T.C. Roberson, Asheville NC (---)

9/15 – Buncombe County Championships, 5K, Black Mountain, NC
Conditions: Very difficult mountain course

Winners of the big Eye Opener meet in Spartanburg SC on Sep 3, Dave Culp’s Rams impressed again by taking the county title in the mountains of western North Carolina. The 2004 state 3A champs are ranked No. 1 in the coaches poll for their classification and are aiming for an 8th state title, but Great American will provide Roberson an opportunity to shine on a bigger stage. “The athletic talent on this year’s team is so good that I really wanted them to also look beyond the state of North Carolina,” Culp said. “Great American and the NTN Regional rankings are a great platform for that type of aspiration…. Our hope is to run well enough at [Great American] and during the season to crack into the regional top 10 at some point this year. I would consider that a fantastic achievement that this team could be really proud of.”
