11/12 – KHSAA State Championships, 5K, Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington KY

SE#2 nailed down an NTN bid with a strong showing in the Kentucky state meet, besting arch-rival Trinity by 15 points in the 3A race with the fastest time of the day in windy conditions at Kentucky Horse Park. Seniors Scott McClain and Thomas Davis went 2-4 overall up front, at 15:48 and 16:02, to lead a Xavier top 5 that averaged 16:24 and spread 1:11 on the challenging 5K layout.

Trinity, the first team with 5 runners in the chute on Saturday, ended its season on a high note, running closer to Xavier than it has all season. Junior Ethan Short, 6th overall at 16:22, led a top 5 that averaged 16:37 and spread just 26 seconds. No other team in the state meet had an average of less than 17:15.

11/12 – FHSAA State Championships, 5K, Little Everglades Ranch, Dade City FL

SE#3 Holy Trinity gave the NTN Selection Committee something to think about with its strong performance in the Florida state meet, scoring 33 to win the 1A race by 90. Sophomore Kyle Cooke finished 3rd overall at 16:21 on the new and not very quick 5K layout at Little Everglades Ranch, leading a top 5 that averaged 16:51 and spread 52 seconds. No other team had a top 5 average of less than 17:00. Still, Holy Trinity, which finished 54 points behind SE#2 St. Xavier at Great American (and 84 points behind SE#1 Chapel Hill), needed a stumble by Xavier on Saturday to move into the top 2 in the region, and Xavier did not oblige.

Formerly ranked Tampa-Jesuit dominated the 2A race behind Duke-bound senior James Osborne, who finished 2nd overall at 16:10. Jesuit’s top 5 averaged 17:02 and spread 1:20. Jesuit Coach Mike Boza called the effort his team’s best performance of the year.

In the 3A race, Jonathan Blocker led formerly ranked Chiles to a 34-point win over Seminole, which dropped out of the top 10 last week after a sluggish win in its region meet. Blocker finished 3rd overall at 16:17 to pace a top 5 that averaged 17:01 and spread 61 seconds.

Six boys teams from Virginia have been ranked in the regional top 10 at various points this season, and the state meet at Great Meadow hardly cleared up which one is best. SE#5 Oakton won the 3A title by 3 points over SE#6 Jefferson, a week after beating Jefferson by 2 points in the region meet. Unranked Midlothian was 1 point back of Jefferson, followed by SE#10 Hermitage and previously ranked Herndon. Previously ranked West Springfield finished 7th. Meanwhile, SE#7 Brentsville won the 2A race by 39 points, with a total time that was tied for 2nd overall with Midlothian, behind Oakton. However, with the 3A, 2A, and 1A races thrown together, Brentsville comes out on top, 9 points up on Oakton.

“This year’s meet (all divisions) was definitely the deepest I have seen in my 11 years of coaching,” said Jefferson Coach Matt Ryan. “We could run it back next week and the top 5 in 3A would be completely reversed.”

2. EPISCOPAL, JACKSONVILLE FL (#1)
10. BUCHHOLZ, GAINESVILLE FL (#9)

11/12 – FHSAA State Championships, 5K, Little Everglades Ranch, Dade City FL

SE#2 Episcopal solidified its already well-established position as the top team in Florida with a 75-point win in the state 2A race. While Episcopal fell short of its state-record sub-21-point goal, the 33-point effort was more than enough to secure the second girls NTN bid from the region. Sophomore Maggie Traylor and younger sister Katie went 2-3 overall, at 19:10 and 19:16, to lead a top 5 that averaged 19:33 and spread 55 seconds on the 5K layout at Little Everglades Ranch, a course that ran considerably slower (by 40-60 seconds) than the similar but possibly shorter layout used at the flrunners.com Invitational in early October.

SE#10 Buchholz won the 4A race by 61 points over previously ranked Our Lady of Lourdes. (Foot Locker South favorite Ashley Brasovan, who went 17:33 at Great American and 17:07 at flrunners.com, won at 17:47.) Buchholz senior Natalie Doss, 9th overall at 19:35, led a top 5 that spread 42 seconds and averaged 19:59. No other team in the meet had a top-5 average of less than 20:00.

3. TATNALL, WILMINGTON DE (#3)
also: PADUA ACADEMY, WILMINGTON DE (---)

11/12 – DIAA Cross Country Championships, 5K, Brandywine Creek State Park

Sophomore Katie Kershner, junior Annie Castagno and freshman Juliet Bottorff crossed the line together at the front to lead Tatnall to an 82-point win in the state Division II race. The front three covered the very difficult 5K layout at Brandywine Creek in 19:50 (Brandywine senior Anna Brousell, the Division I winner at 19:03, was the only other runner to break 20:00 in the meet). Junior Joannie Castagno, 5th at 20:30, and freshman Alex Clapp (12th at 21:52) rounded out a top 5 that averaged 20:23 and spread 2:02. With regular #5 Jenna McCartan running injured the last month of the season (she finished 24th on Saturday at 22:37) and with such light competition, there was little Tatnall could do to improve its NTN chances; but with a top 7 that includes not one senior, Tatnall could be heard from again.

Padua Academy, led by Jen Watunya’s runner-up finish at 20:08, scored 27 to win the Division-I race by 48. Padua’s top averaged 20:53 and spread 1:19.

4. OAKTON, VIENNA VA (#4)
5. BRENTSVILLE DISTRICT, NOKESVILLE VA (#5)
9. MIDLOTHIAN VA (---)
also: BLACKSBURG VA (---)

11/12 – VHSL State Championships, 5K, Great Meadow, The Plains VA

SE#9 Midlothian demolished its 3A rivals – SE#4 Oakton among them – and turned in what may have been the best state meet performance in the Southeast Region, boys or girls, and one of the best team performances in Virginia state meet history. The Trojans, who broke into the rankings in the early going, only to fall out mid-season thanks in large part to competing without one of their top runners (who was playing soccer), were at full strength for districts, regionals and states and ran better each time. Midlo junior M.C. Miller, who finished 11th overall at 18:52, led a top 5 that scored 63 and averaged 19:09 on the challenging 5K layout at Great Meadow. Oakton, thought to be the Virginia team with the best shot at an NTN berth, averaged 19:36 and finished 52 points back.

SE#5 Brentsville won the 2A race by 25 points over a strong team from Blacksburg (4th in total time across all classifications, behind Midlothian, Brentsville and Oakton). Brentsville, led by 2A runner-up Becky Stewart (18:32), averaged a very solid 19:19. Still, with the three classifications combined, Midlothian wins by 51 points over Brentsville in second, with Oakton another 50 points back in third. “I urge you to take a strong look at Midlo’s girls,” Brentsville Coach Rob Dulin said after the meet, in reference to the NTN selection process.

Ultimately, however, relatively poor showings at Great American and the Manhattan Invitational, irrespective of the circumstances, were too much for Midlothian to overcome, particularly given the dominant and consistent seasons turned in by the two teams at the top. Said Midlothian Coach Stan Morgan, whose team features not one senior in its top seven, “You will not have this problem next year.”

Mountain Brook’s top 5 averaged a quick 19:02 on the Oakville Indian Mounds layout, spreading 1:07. Mountain Brook is yet another top girls team that has not one senior in its top 7.

In the 5A race, SE#8 Scottsboro matched Mountain Brook’s 19:02 mark, scoring 23 behind the 1-2 finish of freshman Caitlin Chitwood (18:24) and junior Lacey Wright (18:26). In this meet last year, Scottsboro averaged 19:06 on the way to an NTN bid, while Mountain Brook averaged 19:04.
