Boys

Sept. 1 Scottsboro , AL Trimeet

Hoover, the top team in AL and #3 ranked NTN SE Region preseason team, opened with a close win over host Scottsboro. The low key event was run on Scottsboro’s home course which was laid out when the school was built. The gravel track loops around the school. The course was shorten to 2.05 miles according to Scottsboro Coach Esslinger. Mtn Brook, another traditional Alabama power, was third.

“ We ran close with them, but they were strong,” Esslinger said afterward.

Nearly 250 parents, athletes and coaches were treated to an after the meet dinner in Scottsboro’s cafeteria. Athletes mingled and enjoyed a dinner of baked chicken and other sides.

“That’s what it’s all about,” said Esslinger. “ You like to see them compete hard, but afterwards, it’s always good that they can leave it out on the course.”

Sept. 4 Pensacola, FL Wildcat Invite

Washington (FL), regarded as the third best team in Florida, opened with a solid win over Walton. Sunny skies allowed temperatures to reach 85 degrees on the course which had only 10 feet of shade.
The Wildcats claimed 3, 4, 5 to secure the slim win over a strong Walton team.

“ I wasn’t really happy with how they ran,” said Washington Coach Everett Whiteside. “ Stef Ackerman did not run well, but he also started the season over 18:00 for me last year before posting a 16:31 by season’s end. Neel Stewart, our transfer from Woodham, isn’t used to racing this early. Eric and Brian were not 100% because of sickness. Our freshman ran a smart race.”

“ For our first 5k, I was fairly happy,” said Walton coach, Tom Williams. His team finished in the back of the pack last week at the Stage races. Jay Heller, 2 nd man this week, did not run there. “ You always feel you can do better, but overall we did well. It was a little warm, but we handled the situation.”

Walton’s Sam Bryfcynski took the pace out with Mason and Rob Sorrell of Bolton, TN. But at 2.5 miles, Bryfcynski eased away for the win in 15:59.69. It was a second win of this season for the senior. His time was off the 15:40 best set by Alex Miletich of Tallahassee Chiles last year on a similar course. Conditions were considerably worse this year.

“ Sam is a coach’s delight,” said Williams. “ He felt the heat a little bit early on and was a little conservative.”
Washington will most likely race in Mt Vernon, IL next week, if sanctioning comes through. Whiteside is from the area which produced Craig Virgin, who is family friend of Whiteside.
”He’s spoken to my team on occasion and has been a good family friend. He keeps telling me I should move back to Illinois.”
