Andrew Bumbalough sets Tennessee 3-mile course record in 53-second victory. Pope John Paul FL girls bid for top SE ranking by knocking off last week's SE#1 Holy Trinity.

Some of the SE states began to feel some of what Florida has experienced as hurricane Ivan dumped huge amounts of rain in some areas. Some meets were postponed or canceled. However, some SE teams were still able to butt heads this week.

Boys

1. Jesuit FL- Spanish River Invite 5k

Jesuit along with several other Florida schools learned Wednesday afternoon, that their plans would have to be changed after the UF Invite meet was cancelled. Jesuit quickly made arrangements to trek to Florida’s east coast, but others missed out completely as meets filled to capacity very quickly with the overflow.
The meet start was delayed 35 minutes because of problems with earlier races. At 11:35AM race start time, the temperature reached low 90’s and there was very little shade on the turny course.

Andy Biladeau was able to break away from Bryan Sharkey to win easily. Teammate, James Osborne impressed once again collecting his 3 rd second place finish of the year. A. Boza does not finish due to heat exhaustion. Jesuit continues to show that it’s top seven are interchangeable on any given day.
This was the third win in a row for Jesuit.
Belen Jesuit was a close second, Jesuit 40 to BJ 48, according to the unrevised results.

Jesuit will run their “B” team at next week’s flrunners.com race to prepare for the big enchilada; The Great American Festival NIKE ROC.

3. Collins Hill GA – Gwinnett County Championships

Collins Hill’s top four finished in the top seven, but it still wasn’t enough to overcome Parkview GA who placed six in the top ten. Jesse Marino regained the top spot for Collins Hill with his victory. Bryan Wilson, normal number 5, finished 6 th for Collins Hill this time, 1:03 behind his mark at Mobile Challenge of Champions.
The meet was moved to a midafternoon start because of the rain IVAN dumped on the area.
Another interesting note. Collins Hill head coach, Andrew Hudson and Parkview head coach, Josh Crowfoot, both were Foot Locker Cross Country National qualifiers(see more on Crowfoot below). In 1985 Hudson, a junior, finished 25 th in a time of 15:30.8 running for Woodbridge HS( Woodbridge VA).

JR Tucker wins by 45 points without #5 Tanner Seese who was out due to sickness.

“ A tough hilly course and the site of the Private School State Meet.  It was very windy out and temperature was in the High 60's. Ground was soggy from remnants of IVAN,” says Coach McElroy.

6. Washington FL- Trips canceled because of Hurricane Ivan

District hit hard by Hurricane IVAN. Schools shut down for 2-3 weeks. Possibly no sports activities until schools reopen. A devastating blow to a team that has invested so much this season and has posted some of the fastest times this season. STAY TUNED.

7. Jefferson Alexandria, VA – Lake Forest Invite, DE

TJ travels to DE and beats SE#10 Salesianum soundly. Top 6 in top 13. Coach Matt Ryan says that the course seemed slow, but was not challenging. Course difficulty similar degree of difficulty of the FSU Invite, says former DE coach and now Jesuit assistant, Ray Rodriguez.

9. Parkview(GA) – Gwinnett County Champs

Parkview ekes out win over SE #4. Top six are solid in win and are just :47 seconds apart. Two freshman, Marcelis Lynch and Josh Pinson, have been nice surprises this season for Coach Joshua Crowfoot. They’ve added depth to an already good squad.

Interesting note on Coach Josh Crowfoot.
“ I qualified for Foot Locker Nationals , the year they ran the slowest times in history,” he says with a chuckle. Crowfoot was 28 th in a time of 16:34.8 in 1996 running for South Gwinnet ( Lithonia GA).

Parkview will bypass Great American. They will race at the McQuaid Invite on Oct. 2 and then travel to Furman for a match-up with SE#2 Hoover AL, on Oct. 9.

Other Teams of Note

Winter Park , FL

Winter Park has had everything go wrong so far this season with two hurricanes ravaging the state of Florida. Tables were turned this past weekend and Winter Park seems to be back on track.

“ It was nice to finally get that taste out of our mouths,” said Coach Mike Hill Sunday.
The CA trip came at a great time too.

“ It allowed us to get away and focus on what we needed to do. We went to the ocean on Friday and got a chance to do a course walk through.”

Hill also got a nice surprise when Caleb Vogt, not expected to run at the beginning of the week, felt good enough to run Saturday morning.
The race course was “lightning fast” according to Coach Hill. To get an idea of how fast, 1600m 4A state champ and 4:16 performer, Coleman Hoover was in 25 th place though he ran the first 200m “in about 27 seconds flat.”
5 th man Chris Sickinger, was one of several athletes who took a tumble in the stampede in the first 200m.

“Bodies were flying everywhere,”said Hill.
The pace was still torrid through the mile. Hoover hit 4:41 and was in about 30 th place. His teammates came through in 4:55 and were in about 60 th place.

“ They just go out hard and keep going out there,” said Hill. “ They don’t really die either. My pack only caught about 30 kids.”

“ It was a good race for us, but there is still some room for improvement. Each kid had one thing that wasn’t 100%. We’ll see how we do next week.”
Winter Park returns home state for the flunners.com V next week and with no threat of a hurricane, he’s looking to see how his team responds.
In taking third, Winter Park took down some nationally ranked teams and beats some of NTN Cali's best. Some of those teams were holding out some of their best.

Meet Previews

Boca Raton , FL Spanish River Invite

Spanish River Coach and meet director, Rick Rothman has put together a tremendous event with nearly 1,700 runners. The divisions are split into small schools, 1A/2A, and large schools, 3A/4A.

1A/2A

SE#1 Jesuit had their week thrown into chaos following the cancellation of the UF Invite on Wednesday due to poor conditions at UF’s Golf Course. They will line up their top 7 for the first time this season and Coach Mike Boza is excited. The competition will most likely come from Belen Jesuit( Miami, FL) who won last week’s FIU/Lourdes Invite with a 17:05.27 team average. And that’s with Eddie Arguello running one minute off his usual best. Expect a different team this week. Holy Trinity (Melbourne, FL) could also be a factor after returning to the more friendly flatlands of south Florida.

Individually, this will be a war. Andy Biladeau( Jesuit, Tampa, FL) opens with his first 5k and will face Bryan Sharkey(Gulliver Prep, Miami, FL) who blistered at 15:24.22 last week on a moderately tough course. Throw in the unpredictable Arguello, who won the flrunners.com 5k race last year with a 15:18, and we may just see the fastest time in Florida and the SE region to date. Jesuit’s James Osborne also should be a factor after last week’s 16:12 second place at the FSU Invite.

3A/4A

Cypress Bay finished 2 nd to Belen with a faster team average, 17:02.58. Individually, look for Richie Bonilla( Cypress Bay, FL) to lead the way.

Gwinnett County Championships, GA

Not often are the stakes so high for a county championships. Normally, the repercussions extend only to the county borders. But not this weekend.
SE #3 Collins Hill GA and newly ranked SE #9, Parkview GA are meeting once again where a win could drop or lift a team up in the SE rankings.

This will be the second time the two teams have met. The first time was at the 5 race Walton Raiders Stage Relays in Gainesville, GA and Collins Hill came out ahead, 10-18.

Collins Hill has since gone on to win the Mobile Meet of Champions and Parkview has posted quick times at the Clara Bowl and the tough Carrollton Orthopedic Classic course.

In all, 8 state ranked teams will be lumped together. GA # 9 ranked, Brookwood will make it interesting.

Individually, GA #4-6 ranked individual runners, Nathan Frasier( Collins Hill GA), Jesse Marino ( Collins Hill GA) and Alex Erickson ( Parkview, GA) should be in the mix. Frasier and Marion have traded spots the past two races and Erickson is not too far behind timewise.

The only thing that could stop the race is the weather. Collins Hill, Coach Andrew Hudson writes

“Cancellation would only be because of soggy course conditions at this point. We had 5-7 inches of rain and a lot of flooding in the metro area. We're the only school system in the metro area that is having school today. About 300,000 residents were without power last night. The weather's fine now - but I don't know how the course is. If we don't run it, we might not face Parkview until state.”

Teams of Note

Thomas Jefferson VA

Entering the year, SE # 7 Jefferson VA, had a roster that included 6 guys between 9:53 and 10:18 and another 4 guys between 4:32-39 for the 1600m.

Last weekend, on the 4.8k Monroe Parker Invite course, they averaged 15:49.50 or roughly a 16:29 5k average per man. The tremendously deep team is now ranked number two in VA in the coach’s poll behind Oakton(see below).

Jefferson will travel to the Lake Forest Invitational in Delaware this weekend.

Winter Park, FL- Woodbridge CA Invite

The Park will be racing without possibly two of their varsity runners, Caleb Vogt and Dustin Schuss.
“ When it rains, it pours,” said Winter Park head coach Mike Hill.” No pun intended.”

Oakton, VA – Lake Fairfax Invite

Though Jefferson VA rose to SE #7 this week, Oatkon VA remains the top ranked team in VA according to the VA coaches. Scott Razcko, Alan Webb’s coach, is helping out coach Pat Tiller and it seems everyone has taken notice. They will have an opportunity to make some noise at Great American NIKE ROC and the Eastern States meet on Oct. 16.

Brandon Miles of Milestat.com writes

“Oakton looked quite impressive at Mt. St. Mary's Invite They won the team title with 55 points and a 17:08 team average. Oakton junior James Phillips led the squad with fourth place finishing performance of 16:39. Seniors Jason Vick and Kevin Meehan finished only a few ticks apart from one another for seventh (16:59) and eighth place (17:02) respectively. Juniors Tommy Mason (15th, 17:25) and Colin Braley (21st, 17:34) rounded out a very solid top five for the Cougars. In my mind, right now they'd win the state meet and deserve a top 10 ranking in the Southeast.”

Coach Raczko filled in the PR side of the team.

James Phillips, 11 9:50, 4:33, 15:34 3 mile
Jason Vick, 12 9:40, 4:28
Tommy Mason 11 9:50, 4:35
Kevin Meehan, 12 10:08, 4:43
Pat Epley, 12 10:12, 4:39, 2:02
Colin Braley, 11 4:48, 10:24

Brentwood Academy(TN) - Nashville , TN -TN Classic

BA had an easy win in their first meet posting a 17:14 5k average. Then, last week, they beat a good Walton GA team 45-79 at the UTC/Powerade Invite Chattanooga, TN with a fast 16:43 average.

TN Classic meet director, Frank Rigsby, expects great fast conditions for tomorrow’s race. This may be perfect for BA.
SE #5 Houston TN was scheduled to compete, but are not listed on Coach Rigsby’s entry list.

Meet Previews

Boca Raton, FL Spanish River Invite

Spanish River Coach, Rick Rothman has put together a tremendous event with nearly 1,700 runners. The divisions are split into small schools, 1A/2A, and large schools, 3A/4A.

1A/2A

SE#1 Holy Trinity( Melbourne, FL) scrambled to get into the meet this week after a cancellation of their first meet at Katie Caples on Sept.4. Their competition this week will be untested, SE #5 Pope John Paul II( Boca Raton, FL).
Holy Trinity will be a bit under[wo]manned. Top three runner, Rebecca Zuhlke, will be out this race for personal reasons. This will certainly test HTA’s depth. Their #6 runner has been in the 21’s their first two meets. They do have 4 runners who have run under 21:00. The flat surface may benefit HTA who Coach Butler said were a little intimidated by the hills last week at FSU.
Pope John Paul II has two proven runners in nationally ranked distance runners, Nicole Schappert and Jackie Areson. Both could take 1-2 overall in the meet. Behind them, they have a good group who captured the 2A state championship last year over a very good Bishop Kinney squad.
This will be the first test for PJPII and one should get an idea of how good they are.

3A/4A

Our Lady of Lourdes( Miami, FL) had planned to split their huge team this year between the UF Invite and Spanish River. Then, UF canceled the high school portion and Coach Montalvo had to enter his full varsity at Spanish River. They will be training through as they gear up for a trip to the McNeill Invite in Texas on Oct. 2.

Last week, they average 20:17.82 on a very tough course in Miami, FL. This week, one can see how they stack up against HTA and PJPII.

Individually, an anticipated appearance by Cypress Bay frosh Emilie Amaro will sadly not be. She has a soccer game scheduled this weekend.

Look for Winter Park’s duo, Audrey Allen and Sarah Hughes, Copper City’s Jacy Kruzel, and Cypress Bay teammate Alaina Miller to post some great times this weekend.

Louisville, KY Valkyrie Invite

Teams : MW #9 Colerain Cincinnati OH, du Pont Manual, Sacred Heart, and Mercy

Individuals: Carmen Mims (Mercy, KY) and Brittany Detzel( Colerain, OH)

Nashville , TN TN Classic

Harpeth Hall has posted a team average best of 20:16 this season. Brentwood, White Station, Farragut and Oak Ridge are other top team entrants in this race that features over 1,600 runners.

Individually, Laurel Pritchard( Vestavia Hills AL) is the top entrant. Pritchard won the Clara Bowl in 18:14 two weeks ago. TN’s best, Jillian Skinner ( Brentwood, TN) will give great chase.

Team of Note

Sacred Heart, Louisville KY

Sacred Heart has gotten off to a rocky start, but for good reason.

Coach Rick Heim writes

“We have a couple of key injuries and we are resting s few of my best. K. Hill rested last race and my 4 and 6 runner from state are hurt. My four will be back soon.”

Team To Watch

Oakton, VA- Lake Fairfax Invitational

This team has received high marks in the VA coach’s poll(3 rd overall) and by Brandon Miles of Milestat.com. Possibly, one of the reasons is that Scott Raczko, Alan Webb’s coach, is helping out head coach Phil Tiller.

But, Oakton is far more than just a famous coach. They boast a roster that includes some lofty PR’s from last year. They’ve started off the season with some great marks.

Certainly, they will be one to watch in the future with races at Great American NIKE ROC and the Eastern State Championships on Oct. 16.

Brandon Miles of Milestat.com on Oakton:

“ The girls' team won Mt. St. Mary's Invite with an astoundingly low score of 30 points as they put six runners in the top 15 places and under 21 minutes. The Lady Cougars were led by senior Danielle Light, who garnered a third place finish individually with her time of 19:40. Meanwhile, the remaining top five runners came in a tight spread of 20 seconds with freshmen Carley Hudson (5th, 19:46), sophomore Meredith Tighe (8th, 20:04), junior Kayley Byrne (9th, 20:05), and senior Allegra Smith (10th, 20:07). Sophomore Katie Esselburn also finished 15th (20:40) for Oakton as added depth to squad, which had an impressive team average of 19:56 for the meet. With the addition of the talented freshmen in Hudson, the Oakton ladies have a formidable five that has what it takes to win a state title.”

Oakton Team Roster and PR’s from Coach Scott Raczko

Danielle Light 12 18:38 3mile, 19:32 5K, 11:13, 5:04, 2:14
