Boys recaps

FSU Invite 5k, Tallahassee, FL-

US#10 SE #1 Jesuit(FL) wins easily as Andy Biladeau cheers teammates on.

Coach Boza and Biladeau opted to run the college/open race. Biladeau hit splits of 5:10, 15:30(10:20), 16:06(5K) and 23:38(4.5 miles) before finishing 4 th in 25:50.52. “ I had to go out a little slower since it was 8k,” said Biladeau. “ Overall it was OK. Right now, I’m feeling good for where I’m at. ” Biladeau finished strong, but was some confusion regarding the course led him to believe that there was one more ascent up the long hill near the finish. “ I thought we had to go up the hill a lot. I was saving a lot.”

In Biladeau’s absence, James Osborne, led the way for Jesuit. He dispatched Chris Mullaney(Bishop Kinney), who is coming off an injury, on the final hill to finish in 16:12. Jesuit placed 3 in the top ten to win by 77 points.

“First of all, it’s always good to win,” said Jesuit coach, Mike Boza. “ This is great preparation for the Great American race. There are a lot of similarities between these two courses. The level of difficulty according to Andy[Biladeau] are equal.” “ A couple of kids ran well. James Osborne and Peter Bandyk ran great races. Nobody had a bad race.” Boza also commented on his son who is coming back from an injury. “ I’m satisfied that he ran without pain,” said Boza. “ He ran fair for his first xc race. He has two-thirds of his game back.” After a loss by Winter Park this past week, Boza was quick to put the win into perspective. “ We realize our dream and today we were awaken to it a little bit,” said Boza. “ Last week, we went out hard and there was really nobody left to race with. Some of them had a fantasy that that might happen again. It’s given us more motivation to work. Last week, we may have thought we’d gotten there, but this week, we realize there is a way to go.” Individually, Jeremy Criscione ( Interlachen, FL) ran away with the race to win in 15:59.66. He cruised the opening half before settling down. His splits were 5:11, 5:03, and 5:14(15:28). “ I felt pretty strong in the middle miles, then picked it up in the end,” Criscione said. “ I thought I could have gone a little bit faster, but for the first race I was happy with it. I thought they were a little closer. I just tried to keep my pace. Coming out of the woods, I started to feel lethargic and then there was that big hill at the end. This was a good course. It was a true xc courses. This is one of the tougher courses I have run.

US#19 and SE #2 Winter Park(FL) Loses

US #19 SE #2 Winter Park lost to Orlando area rival, Colonial(1st defeat to a 4A team since 2000 state championship loss to Jefferson twin led Delray Beach Atlantic). Winter Park has missed several days of formal practices and one race.
Coach Mike Hill sensed that the missed days of practiced and the disruption of routine would be a problem before the race. On a sloppy course, his concern comes to fruition. Coach Hill wasn’t surprised by the result.
Top three runner, Caleb Vogt, did not run because of sickness and Donny Anguish, usual #2 man, had an uncharacteristically off day.

Colonial, a much smaller team, has been able to practice during the two hurricanes and came out with an impressive performance. Colonial, a Great American NIKE ROC entrant, will test themselves against SE’s top team Jesuit, at the UF Invite this coming Saturday.

#10 Spring Valley, SC Wins SC Only Meet

Spring Valley defeats all of SC best teams. Ridgeview was a close second. Steven Luckie ran JV race in 18:35. He was predicted to be one of their top 5 runners. Another top 5 candidate, William Hunter, did not run.

Spring Valley Coach and meet director, John Jones, writes

“We added .1 to the course of two years ago. The condition of the course was poor ( grass was tall and the sand was deep and loose). It ran slow and has a big hill that you do twice so it was a good test of strength. We ran solid but not great and are happy with the win. Ridgeview is tough but not deep. Northwestern would have shown better but they all got stung multiple times by wasps at practice on Friday. Dorman is getting better. For Mill has the kids to be very good but has not gotten them all to a meet yet and those there look tired.”

Brian Sharkey hits mile in 4:40, two mile in 9:40 before shattering the course record with his 15:24.22. Moise Joseph(Miami Central/UF/Haitian Olympian) held the previous record of 15:31 on the course. 0.1 mile was added on to this year’s course by meet director, Ary Montalvo and Sharkey still surpassed the margin the mark. In the two years that Joseph challenged and then broke the record, he defeated the Jefferson twins for the state 4A title.
“ I went out the first mile in 4:40 and it felt easy,” said Sharkey. “ Richie Bonilla and Eddie Arguello were close and I just kept pressing the pace. I can’t believe I ran that fast.”
Bonilla of Cypress Bay finished second in 16:05.
Course conditions were tough. 6-8 inch tall grass throughout the course and two ascents up a 75m hill(Yes, a hill) very steep hill. Temperatures were in the high 80’s to low 90’s with the typical high Florida humidity. It didn’t seem to deter Sharkey who spent his summer running in Maine amongst other places.
College race was won in 15:56.72.

Girls recaps

FSU Invite, Tallahassee, FL

US#15 SE #1 Holy Trinity and Kelly Parrish (Vanguard, Ocala, FL) star

US #15 SE #1 Holy Trinity(FL) won it’s first official race. After last week’s canceled race and the possibility of a cancellation this week, Coach Doug Butler used some smooth talking to convince his administrators to allow them to compete.

“We weren’t going to be allowed to run today. I had to beg our headmaster to get to come here,” said Butler afterwards. “ Hopefully, she’s happy.”
Florida’s xc season has been thrown into chaos by the two hurricanes that swept through the state. Butler has missed several organized practices and hasn’t seen some of his kids for five or six days. It didn’t affect their performance on Saturday.

“ I was real happy. The times were slow, but we did well place wise. Three of our girls were in the top ten and two more in the top thirty, “ said Butler. “ We really haven’t race cross country since last year. The preseason jamboree was low key.”
The course was difficult for the flatlanders from Florida’s east coast.

“ We don’t run hills well. We don’t train on them and they were a little psyched out by them.”

Individually, the star of the day was Kelly Parrish (Vanguard, Ocala, FL). The double 1600m/3200m state champion who won despite a stress fracture in her foot last spring, is fully recovered and off to a splendid start.

The junior was nearly sidelined for this race when her principal decided to cancel all athletic competitions for the week because of Hurricane Frances. She was able to get into the college/open race days prior to the meet. She dueled with FSU All-American Natalie Hughes and FSU frosh and 2003 Foot Locker finalist, Laura Bowerman(King, Tampa, FL) for most of the race. After splits of 5:46 and 5:37, Parrish even surged on the pair. But Hughes rallied and dropped her by 2.5 miles. Bowerman and Parrish traded places the final mile before Bowerman used a strong kick to finish second. Parrish crushed her former best by over 30 seconds.

“ I think it was pretty well paced. It felt pretty relaxed except for the second mile where there were a lot of surges,” said Parrish who was a former cheerleading captain for her school before taking up xc her freshman year. “ I tried to throw in some surges, but it didn’t quite work out.”

“ I’m really happy with my time. My coach [James Travieso. Steve Hassen’s former HS coach] has been working with me to get tot hat fitness level at this point. This was the first race of the season and you can really tell. Just getting back into race mode. Knowing when to surge and when to not. Hopefully, I can go faster. ”

“ They(his team) went out a bit faster than I like them to go out in the 1st mile, but Emile Amaro took off and my whole team , Jacy Kruzel of Cooper City, Isel Ramos of Hialeah Miami Lakes, Ashley Isabel of Lely and few others gave chase and for about 2 miles they still had Amaro in their sight.
