Northeast Week #2
Week ending Sept. 17, 2005
By Don Rich, NTN Northeast Region Editor

Quote of the week: "We will rely on front four running significally faster.." - Bill Aris, Head Coach, NE#1, US#2 Fayetteville-Manlius NY, talking about a new approach to winning for 2005.

Boys Headlines: #9 Ridgewood upset by Philly Catholic power Cardinal O'Hara at Briarwood after losing a runner to heat problems. Morris Hills and Monsignor Farrell have to weave in and out of the PSAL race at Van Cortlandt, and the crowd does make a difference.

Teams:

1. Fayetteville-Manlius NY - Opened 9/17 at South Jefferson Invitational on muddy, slow course, site of their Sectional championships. Owen Kimple leads team as only runner in the race under 17:00.

2. Christian Brothers Academy NJ - Home dual meets 9/13 vs. Freehold and
9/15 vs. Howell. They do the dual dual thing against next week, before racing NE#3 Morris Hills NJ, and NE#9 Ridgeway NJ at the Shore Coaches Inv at Holmdel October 1.

3. Morris Hills NJ
7. Monsignor Farrell NY - 28th Regis Invitatonal at 2.5 mile Van Cortlandt Park, NYC. 85, humid.

The Wreck at Regis: The hot race with these two ranked teams turned into a slow-motion train wreck, as the pack ran into, through, over and around the late-running PSAL race, which had started just 90 seconds ahead of them. If you were out fast and at the front of the pack, you still had to negotiate your way around the crowd, but you had a better chance of survival. (From a running forum, Farrell #2 man Jeff Carbonella said "in my estimation..for every 10 steps I took I had to pass about 3 or 4, most of whom were walking three abreast so like I had to run off the path, thru plants and stuff...or, as I did once or twice, just push through them like a football player goin thru his offensive line." Farrell coach Tom Cuffe would like to see how his squad stacks up in a race that doesn't add obstacles. He gave his #5-7 runners instructions to run together and then move over the last two miles of the race. They entered the bridge, and the congestion, and soon had no idea who they were actually racing. Their 5th man would end up running 7th, and the last three were 50 seconds off their normal times for the 2.5 miles course. Morris Hills would win 36-75. Cuffe believes, while acknowledging the quality of the Morris Hills team, that the race would have been a contest if it had been run without the obstacles. Morris Hills and Farrell could face off again at the 10/8 Manhattan Invitational. Before that, Morris Hills is at the 9/24 Randolph Inv at Freedom Park in NJ, while Farrell goes to Great American.

3. Bronxville NY - Suffern Invitational at Bear Mountain 3.0 mile course.
7. Suffern NY
After winning the 2.5 VCP Ursuline Invitational 9/10 with a 15:27 average and 59-second spread, Bronxville NY vaulted to NE#3. Suffern, minus two top girls. lost to unranked Cornwall 9/10, and started the new week at NE#7. These two teams were both at the 9/17 Suffern Invitational, but ran in different races, Bronxville in Varsity B vs. Shaker, and Suffern in Varsity A vs. Warwick Valley.

Suffern ran one of their "1.5" girls, Shelby Greany, in the Freshman race. She won the 1.8 miles in 10:24.64, just six-tenths off the course record, all while racing with an untied shoe. (Coach Tom McTaggert refers to Greany and senior Tara McKennna each as his 1.5, since they are so close.) For fun (and conversation), I put the times together below, and you can see that the Bronxville and Suffern race would have been too close to call. Suffern will be without McKenna at the 9/24 Queensbury Inv because she will be on a college visit. These two teams will have to start to settle this later in the season...say, at the Manhattan Inv on 10/8.

Oh, and unranked Warwick Valley NY isn't just defending Foot Locker champ Aislinn Ryan. They were only 13 points behind Suffern in their head-to-head race. Ryan won in 17:34.32.

4. Hilton NY - Impressive at the 9/17 Wildcat NY Inv, site of the
2003 NY State Championships. While the weather on this day was better than the 2003 race, according the Hilton coach Mike Szczepanik, the wind still howled as it always does. The course is a two-loop affair that features a nearly 800 meter moderate hill that is always into the wind. Hilton scored just 25 behind Amanda Griggs' 18:37.
Remembering that the races were on two different days, you can take a look at the 2003 results to see how well Hilton's times compared with Saratoga's of two years ago. (http://www.armorytrack.com/xc03/

10. Concord Carlisle MA - Defending their 2004 championships at the
9/17 Amherst Invitational proved to be more difficult than imagined.

Finishing 6th in the field, the race was dominated by host Amherst Regional. They were followed by Keene NH, Dennis Yarmouth, Chelmsford and Cathedral. Amherst did their damage in a pack from 3rd through 12th for 42 points. Concord-Carlisle should improve as the season progresses, sorting out the top seven with two frosh who ran the Freshman race, finishing 2-3, and would have run 1 and 4 in the Varsity race for their team.
