Headlines:
* - CBA NJ is picking up steam in the Northeast, and now has beaten three of the top seven NE teams on consecutive weeks.

Teams:

1. Fayetteville-Manlius NY - They will face NE#6 Liverpool NY at the 10/29 OHSL Champs @ Tully HS, and Sectionals, and Feds. Their four-race run for a return to NTN and to keep their newly minted US#1 ranking begins on October 29th with that race.

2. CBA NJ -
4. Saratoga Springs NY -
7. Bishop Hendricken RI -

Brown Invitational, Goddard State Park 5k Results from http://www.ritca.com/results.htm

Somebody kicked the sleeping giant, US#5, NE#2 Christian Brother Academy NJ. We won't say who, but two weeks later at the Brown Invitational, they continued asserting their claim as one of the top two teams in the Northeast and top five US, using a 56-second compression behind 3rd place Chris Horel to beat NE#4 Saratoga Springs NY in their only regular season head-to-head race this year, 70 to 132. Just for insurance, CBA's 6th man was only three seconds behind their 5th. Plus, normal top five runner Justin Wheat ran 7th for CBA in his first race back after the bizarre fan-bullrush incident two weeks ago. Running the same group that won the Varsity D race a week ago at Manhattan, NE#7 Bishop Hendricken RI finished 13th, while previously ranked Brockton MA was 3rd, 20 points behind Saratoga Springs.

5. Warwick Valley NY - The Purple Wave's "B" team cruised through the Ridgewood, NJ Invitational with just 37 points. The race was moved from Ridgewood HS because of the rain, but Garret Mountain wasn't all that friendly either after a week's worth of rain.

6. Liverpool NY - With the exception of #1 Ben White, Liverpool ran their "B" team because of PSATs at their home meet. White won in 16:28, with Oswego's Jake McAndrew 2nd at 16:32. They will face US#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY at the 10/29 OHSL Champs @ Tully HS, and Sectionals, and Feds.

Liverpool NY Invitational @ Long Branch Park 5k
Results: http://www.tullyrunners.com/XC2005/Liverpool.htm

Note on Liverpool Invitational: Each varsity team competes in two separate varsity races ... in Race One, only the top three runners from each team compete - all three runners count in the team scoring, and Race One is scored as a separate race ... in Race Two, only runners #4, #5, #6 and #7 from each team compete - three runners count in a team score, and Race Two is scored as a separate race ... the team scores from Races One and Two are added together to calculate the overall team score ... therefore, six runners count in the overall team score.

Once again, teams used a big meet to show they deserve consideration for NTN ranking. Oakton VA was unranked in the Southeast. All they did was knock off the Southeast's #3 team from Thomas Jefferson with a team average of 13:23, a mark that is in the neighborhood with many of the averages from the 10/8 Manhattan Inv, which was contested through driving rain and wind. Unranked LaSalle PA averaged 13:26.

A little stability returned to the universe this week, as US#2, NE#1 Saratoga Springs NY exorcized a bit of the Manhattan Invitational demons with a 43-119 win over NE#9 Bay Shore NY. Their 2:01 compression is a bit better for 5k than their 1:39 compression for 2.5 miles at Manhattan.

3. Suffern NY - Had changed their plans to race the Liverpool Invitational on October 15 to instead race at Ridgewood NJ. But with a tough week of training in the rain and a few dings to let heal, they opted to stay home. Their League 1B meet is October 19 over the 5k course at Van Cortlandt Park. On October 22, they'll be at Bear Mountain State Park for the Westchester-Rockland-Dutchess Coaches Association Invitational.

Burnt Hills Invitational @ Saratoga Spa, 3.05 miles
Results: http://www.section2harrier.com/xc05burnthillsinvyg.htm

What an email from Holy Names would probably sound like today: "Hello. We're Academy of the Holy Names. We'd like you to notice us. In September, the 10th to be exact, we finished 3rd at the Shaker Invitational to Shenendehowa NY and Shaker NY, and beat NE#4 (then they were #7) Bethlehem NY by a point. That's OK, because it was all pretty close. We knew we'd have other chances. So we waited two weeks, and went to Queensbury NY, the pre-States site, and again ran pretty well. We lost to Hilton NY, but they're obviously having a great year. But we did beat two more ranked teams -- then NE#7 Suffern NY (they're currently NE#3), and then-NE#5 Shenendehowa, which was 6th as a team that day.

So in two weeks, our finishes were getting better. Alas, we didn't see our names anywhere on the top ten. But we're good kids, so we just went back to training, and knew another opportunity would come along. And two weeks later it did. This time, we decided that to get noticed we'd win. And again, we beat a ranked team. For the 2nd time this season, we won against (now
NE#4) Bethlehem NY by 62 points. Our hosts, Burnt Hills NY, were 2nd, 46 points behind. The course is 3.05 miles, but we thought you'd appreciate seeing our times in a row... so, not to be pushy or anything, here they are: 17:56.3, 18:43.0, 18:49.9, 18:51.4, 19:22.4, and 19:44.1. We're happy. And we know we will have other opportunities. So please remember our name: Academy of the Holy Names. Just like Saratoga Springs, we're from New York, in case you missed that. And if you compare our times on the same course (Saratoga ran there on Tuesday October 11th), it's kind of interesting (17:51, 17:51, 18:21, 19:17, 19:40). We'll be patient though. And thank you for your consideration."
