#1 Fayetteville-Manlius overcomes adversity to win McQuaid

NE#3 CBA NJ and #5 Morris Hills NJ face off in different race in NJ with Morris Hills the winner (on paper), but do it for real at next week's Manhattan Inv.

Teams:

1. Fayetteville-Manlius NY - McQuaid Inv -- With Andrew McCann (NTN and FL Finalist in 2004) under the weather, the #5 and #7 guys on FM had to step up, and did. (McCann normally runs with Heron). Luke Fitzgibbons and Dan Marnell, seeing that McCann was in distress, made the effort needed to close the gap as much as they could, taking 10th and 17th, each with their best races to date. Coach Bill Aris was proud of his team's effort... "We were tested by adversity and overcame it. I think we gained something teamwise as a result." FM will next race at the Manhattan Invitational 10/8, facing off in the Varsity C race against NE#3 Christian Brothers Academy NJ, and NE#5 Morris Hills NJ.

5. Morris Hills NJ – Depending on who you ask, their 16:30.80 average at oft-raced Holmdel Park NJ in Varsity Race D is the 12th or 13th fastest 5-man average ever run there. It was the fastest of the day at the Shore Coaches Invitational, and about 13 seconds per man faster than that run by NE#3 CBA on the same day in a different race.
"My kids have been motivated lately", says Morris Hills coach Sean Robinson.

7. Coatesville PA -
10. Cardinal O'Hara -

A week after knocking off NE#8 Manheim Township PA at the Carlisle Invitational and returning to the Northeast rankings, faced off against NE#10, Briarwood Invitational champ Cardinal O'Hara and successfully defended home turf at the 5K Steel City Invitational. The hill is a great neutralizer in this race, and the Coatesville boys know every inch of it. Coatesville tallied 78 poins with five in the top 27 and a compression of 1:01. Cardinal O'Hara finished 2nd with 122 points, 44 better than Parkland PA. O'Hara was missing their #4 man, out with a sprained ankle... but Lion coach Tom Kennedy feels that while the score would have been closer, the outcome would have remained the same "on that day."

9. West Chester East PA -
Unranked Cumberland Valley PA –

Vs. West Chester Henderson in Tri-meet 9/28 @ Oakbourne Park, West Chester 5K

West Chester East lost twice this week, first to unranked, but strong league rival West Chester Henderson in a dual meet by just one point... and then to unranked Cumberland Valley PA by two points at the 10/1 Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh Univerisity. Cumberland Valley had been 5th at Carlisle behind Coatesville PA and Manheim Township PA, plus North Allegheny and Parkland. If you ran in the morning college races at Paul Short, you raced in ideal conditions. By the time the high school races started, the open course had a chance to heat up.

In the first "Battle of West Chester", it was former state champs Henderson that got the better of NTN Northeast #7 East at Oakbourne Park, Henderson's home course. East got seven runners across before Henderson's 5th, but in the tight scoring of a dual meet, that 5th was across just in time to edge East by one point, 28-29. Duriel Hardy of East, set a course record of 15:53.

Girls

Nine ranked teams from the Northeast and Southeast converge on the Eastern States race at the 10/8 Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park.

NE#7 Suffern NY was 14th at Paul Short, where NE#10 Bay Shore came up with a big win.

NE#9 Roxbury NJ was a narrow 2nd to NE#8 Morris Knolls NJ at Shore Coaches.

1. Saratoga Springs NY – It'll be all-comers two weeks after winning Great American, when the girls from New York and #1 team in the US faced ranked teams in the 10/08 Eastern States Race at the Manhattan Invitational. Those teams include: NE#2 Hilton NY, NE#3 Bronxville NY, NE#4 Jackson NJ, NE#5 Bethlehem NY, NE#7 Suffern NY, NE#10 Bay Shore NY... along with Paul Short runner-up Colts Neck NJ, 3rd place team Warwick Valley NY, along with SE#7 Tatnall DE and SE#9 Midlothian VA.

2. Hilton NY - Placing five in the top 12 behind a course-record time of 16:53 by Amanda Griggs, Hilton kept a big race to just 24 points at the 3.0 mile McQuaid Invitational. The get their first shot at Saratoga Springs of the season at next week's Manhattan Invitational Eastern States race. Coach Mike Szczepanik said he was he was pleased with the performance of his team, but particularly Griggs, who had watched a Canadian girl set the course record at 16:58 two hours before she was to race. "We told her it was a fast course and perfect weather. Running by herself the last two miles, the record that was set only a few hours earlier, was broken."

6. Champlain Valley VT – Faced with a lot of the issues many teams face throughout a tough season, Champlain Valley VT did what strong teams do, overcome the obstacles and still win. Missing a top runner, and with two others off their normal pace, they won the Woods Trail Run at Thetford Academy, Vermont with 20:24.20 5K average. It's the site of New Englands this year. Champlain Valley will race 10/7 at a Pre-SAT Inv. @ Harwood.

8. Morris Knolls NJ -
9. Roxbury NJ -

A seven-point win is about what separates the 8th and 9th-ranked teams in the Northeast. Roxbury Twp went 1-2 with Jenn Ennis and Kristen Stevens, placed two more between Morris Knolls' 1st and 2nd runners, but then watched as five Morris Knolls runners came across between 16th and 25th places. Morris Knolls has the 10/8 SAT conflict, so they next race 10/11 in a tri-meet, and 10/18 in the Iron Conference Champs. Roxbury is in the same conference, so these two teams will see each other four more times if you include Sectionals, Groups and All-Groups at seasons-end.
